DOST teaches Ilonggo locals paper making for livelihood &
tourism ILOILO-- In the pursuit of their passion and skills in arts and crafts through paper making as a form of livelihood, the Granada National High School and Sabalo Productions, a group of local artists and environmentalists who are currently into making of Tera Cota magnet as souvenir items at Islas de Gigantes, Carles, Iloilo, availed of the training on handmade paper from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST VI) last August 1, 2019 at Granada National High school, Islas de Gigantes, Carles, Iloilo. Resource person Mr. Jairus M. Lachica, a handmade paper making expert and former Provincial Science and Technology Director of Aklan Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) trained the participants composed of selected pupils and teachers from Granada Elementary School, Granada National High School and the Philippine Life Savers (PLS). Moreover, the said training on handmade paper in Carles is a way of assisting the locals in building their community to become a sustainable tourist destination. The raw material that was used for the activity was cogon plant which possesses suitable amount of fiber, a major component required in handmade paper making. (DOST6/JRAGabiota)
