“The Croods”

Movie Industry has already produced a vast number and variety of films from the most

basic to trademark film excellence. Although there are many of these films have proven

outstanding for both good and bad reasons by being classical, adventurous, and a simple one,

only a few have come to be regarded as memorable, full of lessons and an entertainment for me.

The films in this category for the most part achieve the enduring excellence that qualifies them as

‘worth-watching’. One such film is The Croods. This wonderful creation was produced by great

ideas of Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders.

“Another life begins at the end of your comfort zones.” The Croods is such a wonderful

film and one of the most imaginative and creative 3D- Animation ever made. “The Croods” is

one of those "Laugh-Out-Loud Funny" 3D-Animation movies. It is a very imaginative and

creative design that serves entertainment and gives a lot of fun for grown-ups and kids. It is a

comedic film relief that everyone can enjoy. The film is set in a fictional prehistoric era, where a

prehistoric family unit lives in a cave for protection against fantastical creatures wandering

outside their boundaries. The family soon tried to adopt in a changing world and navigate their

way through the fantastic world beyond their cave.

I can say that the Croods is wonderfully impractical enough to keep us laughing all the

way through, but it also has great characters that are well-designed to give striking messages to

us, viewers. Grug Crood, an overprotective father of the family who introduces a sense of fear to
his family about how dangerous their lives would be outside their small cave, especially when

darkness comes. But then his teenage daughter Eep thinks on the contrary to her father’s view,

over-protectiveness and being cooped up in the cave as she was restlessly longing to explore new

horizons beyond their cave. His wife, Ugga, and more open-minded than him has been taking

care with their wild baby Sandy, the family's secret weapon. His son Thunk and mother-in-law,

Gran are crazily unpredictable.

In the beginning, when the family goes out to search for their breakfast, they had their

planned formation that shows oneness and bond of their family. They seemed to be tumbling

around with a giant bird’s egg like a rushing sports team.

Then one night, being curious, Eep slip out of the cave and hit into Guy, a slightly more-

evolved human who has created fire and has some ideas about survival, which none of his ideas

the fiercely close-minded Grug. What Eep did about sneaking out is also done by some teenage

girls nowadays. Teenagers are more likely adventurous that the adult one. Like Eep, teens always

want to discover something new beyond the limits.

When their cave, which serves as their home for a long time falls down and destroyed by

an earthquake and they’re forced to go on a journey with Guy, everyone is a little freaked out -

but not Eep. As Grug believes "fear is good; change is bad." Grug's main rule in life is: "never

leave the cave." For the Croods, anything new is super scary. New is bad. The idea of leaving the

cave is freaking them out. But then Eep, is curious by nature and wants to explore the world

outside their cave. Eep does not believe in her father's philosophy of "never not be afraid."

“New is bad.” This was intended to be literal for the cave man family. In the beginning of

the movie, Grug always said that new is always bad. But at the end of the movie, he became
conscious that there was so much more to new things than danger. No matter what happen, we

will always have to experience it and meet new things. The best we can do is to not be terrified

of it. Being open to new things is the only way we will able to realize more about ourselves.

Nothing will happen, if we keep fear conquer upon us. We should always keep in our mind that

not all the change are for worse, some are for better that can mold us into a better one. We

should try a new approach to the same old problem. We should not be afraid of change.

She already believed on Guy’s philosophy the time she met him and warns her about the

end of the world and that the family must leave the cave and get to higher ground to survive.

Guy's viewpoint is "keep moving forward." For Grug, it’s really terrible especially Eep is not

following him. Grug is physically strong as the stone headed father who's sickened of change, so

he's expectedly nervous about how to fit with Guy who is changing the perception of his

independent-minded daughter.

Exploring outside the cave for Grug is a big no. If it isn’t because of curiosity then, Guy

wouldn’t be able to produced ideas such as fire. We will not be able to discover anything new

without curiosity. We should be curious. Having a lot of questions in our mind is perfectly okay

because curiosity will not always bring you harm. It is best to let our minds wander about

certainties in life. Because of this we are able to get to discover possibilities. We should never be

afraid to ask why, what and how. Remember: we can always use our mind to unlock new things

in the world.

Even if Grug don’t want to get out of the cave, he also have a dream, a dream of keeping

his family always safe and finding a stable and safe shelter for them. He’d never expected that

he’d get his dreams by setting his fear aside. We should never let fear get in the way to our
dreams. All of us have things that scare us. As what they often say, never let fear paralyze you.

Instead, let it motivate you. Like in Grug's case, he always fears of the unknown. I know new

sometimes scare us but we have to believe that there could be things greater than fear. We have

to believe in our dreams more than we fear.

As the family explore outside the cave, the greater the time they had with each other and

the more experience they will cherish together. As the family wandered through the peculiar

place, they met Douglas: Thunks’pet, Chunky: Grug's pet, Bear Owl: Eep and/or Guy`s pet,

Ground Whale/Walking Whale: Thunk's pet, A Mousephant: Sandy's pet, and Liyotes: Gran's

pets. This shows that after all their fear of these animals; it is possible to face your fear and even

became associates of it.

I really enjoyed the movie because, besides the wonderful 3D visual effects, the movie

shows reality and lessons really applicable in our daily lives. Me, as a girl and even boys really

like wild and adventurous Eep—I can see most of the teenage girls nowadays from her. The

scenes where Eep was majorly falling on Guy, it added attention to the movie by having a little

bit of love scenes between them especially on us, teenagers.

There is a scene that Eep can’t tell “I love you” to his father. All of us almost forget to

say what’s important to the person who deserves to hear it. Like simple “I love you” and simple

“thank you”. Like what Eep forgot to say to his father. She is really regretful the time she think

she will not be able to see her father again after being separated by an earthquake. We don't have

to say these things necessarily every day. But we have to try to say them often enough and show

them so that they won't forget that they are important to you and they won’t feel rejected and

neglected by us. “Don't forget to say what's important.”

The movie may not be real and was just based on fictions and unreal things but I can say

that the message and all the principles brought in the movie are very alive. Like what Eep did,

it’s not about abandoning the rules; it is just having ideas through curiosity and go toward the

light.

“Follow the sun; you’ll make it to tomorrow.” And at the end of the movie, the most

touching one, the Croods together with Guy followed the light together and they’d make it to

tomorrow. They all conquered their fear and together they reached their dreams. Family has to be

together.

After all, I can say that after watching “The Croods”, another ninety-eight minutes of my

life was worth spent.
