Power Semiconductor Devices: Introduction, Power Electronics, Power
semiconductor devices, Control Characteristics, Types of power electronic
I converters. Power MOSFET: Structure, operation, steady state 10
characteristics, switching characteristics. IGBT: Structure, operation, steady
state characteristics, switching characteristics.
Thyristors: Structure, Two Transistor Model, steady state characteristics,
switching characteristics, di/dt and dv/dt protection. Design of firing circuits
using UJT, R, R-C circuits.

Commutation Techniques: Introduction, Natural Commutation. Forced
commutation self-commutation, resonant pulse commutation and impulse
commutation.
Controlled Rectifiers: Principle of phase controlled converter operation,
Single- phase semi-converters, Full converters, Three-phase half-wave
III converters, Three-phase full-wave converters and Dual converter. (Continuous 10
conduction mode only)
Inverters: Principle of operation, Performance parameters, Single-phase half
wave and full bridge inverters, Three phase inverters (180 and 120 degree
IV conduction mode), various PWM techniques, SPWM technique for single 10
phase and tree phase inverter.
AC Voltage Controllers: Principle of ON-OFF and phase control, Single-
phase bi-directional controllers with Resistive load and Resistive-Inductive

Choppers: Principle of step-down and step-up chopper with R and R-L load,
Performance parameters, Chopper classification.
