Vision problems that end blindness are still a priority in handling eye health
problems, not only in Indonesia but throughout the world. It`s estimated there are
285 million people or 4.24% of the world population experiencing visual
impairment and 39 million (0.58%) of them experiencing blindness. In Indonesia
the prevalence of blindness is still high, especially at the age of> 50 years,
around 3.2% with the main cause of cataracts at 71%. This is in accordance with
the data obtained at Poly KBR (Cataract Refractive Surgery) Cicendo Eye
Hospital which places 70% of visits of cataract patients dominated by patients
aged> 50 years. Cataracts are turbidity that occurs in lens fibers, in the elderly
has four stages of growth, namely insipient, immature, mature, hypermature. The
purpose of this study to determine the factors associated with cataract stage in
the elderly who visited the KBR poly Cicendo Eye Hospital Bandung Apri-May
2019. It was a descriptive study with a cross sectional approach. A sample of 234
people with collection techniques accidental sampling. The instrument used was a
questionnaire analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of α =
0.05. The results showed a relationship between diabetes mellitus on cataract
stage (p = 0.025 <α = 0.05), the relationship of smoking to cataract stage (p =
0.029 <α = 0.05), the relationship of vitamin A intake to cataract stage (p =
0,000 < α = 0.05). Based on the results of the study showed a significant
relationship between cataract stage with the three factors above. This study
illustrates the importance of education related to diabetic, vitamin A intake and
avoid cigarettes factors that are related to or influence the process of cataracts.
