 “THE HISTORY OF REOG PONOROGO”
Once upon a time, stood an empire called the Kingdom of Kediri in Indonesia. The kingdom of Kediri is
led by a kind king. Raja Kediri has a daughter named Putri Sanggalangit. Princess Sanggalangit is kind and
very beautiful. Many princes from various kingdoms tried to apply for Princess Sanggalangit. But, none
of the princes were able to make Princess Sanggalangit fall in love.

Thinking about Princess Sanggalangit, makes the king sad. He wanted to immediately see his daughter
get married. To drive his heart out, the king met with Princess Sanggalangit. He asked his daughter to
accept the proposal of one of the princes.

"Okay, Daddy. I have a condition for the prince who wants to give me an arrangement. Tell them that I
want to see a performance accompanied by 140 twin horsemen. They also have to bring two-headed
animals," said Princess Sanggalangit.

"That is impossible, my daughter," said King Kediri, surprised by the conditions put forward by his
daughter.

However, Princess Sanggalangit doesn't care. He wanted the prince who applied for him to show the
show. With a heavy heart, King Kediri also announced the terms of Putri Sanggalangit.

All princes immediately competed to create the show that Princess Sanggalangit wanted. But, no one
was able to create the show. One by one the prince gave up. Finally, the remaining two princes, namely
Prince Kelana and Prince Singabarong. Several months passed, Prince Kelana had almost finished
preparing everything. But there are still less, namely two-headed animals. While he only has a peacock.
The Prince of Kelana hopes that Princess Sanggalangit will like her peacock.

The awaited day arrived. The group of Kelana Prince walked towards the Kingdom of Kediri. But, in the
middle of the trip, suddenly there was a lion blocking. Apparently, the lion was the incarnation of Prince
Singabarong. He wanted to take all the preparations for the Prince of Kelana.

The battle with the lion ensued. Inevitably, several soldiers were injured. When the Prince of Prince was
about to face the lion himself, suddenly his peacock flew and landed right on the lion's shoulder.

Seeing this opportunity, the Prince of Kelana immediately took his final weapon, a whip. He immediately
whipped the two animals, until their bodies united. As a result, the lion and its peacock can no longer be
separated. Yes! Prince Kelana managed to realize all the requirements of Princess Sanggalangit. Princess
Sanggalangit also liked the show. Moreover, the animal with the head of a lion and peacock is also very
beautiful.

According to the agreement, Putri Sanggalangit accepted the application of the Prince of Kelana. Since
then, the show that Prince Kelana has played was named reog ponorogo.

The moral message of the Brief Archipelago Folklore Origin of Reog Ponorogo is if you want to get
something, fight for yourself. Don't try to grab someone else's. It will harm yourself and others.
