RESEARCH TOPIC: EFFECT OF HERBICIDES ON THE PLANT GROWTH

RESEARCH PROBLEM: What are the effects of herbicides on the plant growth?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

1. When should herbicides be applied?

Answer:
Spring pre-emergent herbicide applications are used to prevent summer annual weeds. Summer
annual weeds are both grassy and broadleaf types. For best results apply herbicides when the
soil temperature is around 55 degrees or above for at least 36 to 72 hours (ideally this will be
two weeks before seed germination).

2. How long do herbicides last in plants?

In fact, the majority of residentially sold weed killers are required by law to break down in the soil
within 14 days, if not sooner. Take glyphosate, for example. This post-emergent, non-selective herbicide
generally breaks down within days to weeks depending on the specific product you have.

3. How do you calculate herbicide rate?

After you've calibrated the sprayer to know your application rate in gallons per acre, divide that number
into the gallons applied with each tankful to find how many acres each tankful covers. Then, multiply the
acres per tank by the herbicide needed per acre to find the herbicide to put in each tankful.
