SUPPORT PACKAGE FOR FARMERS ABOUT READY - Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced Friday that USDA’s
Office of the Chief Economist has published a detailed accounting of how estimated damage from trade disruptions was calculated.
He developed an estimate of gross trade damages for commodities with assessed retaliatory tariffs by China, India, the European
Union, and Turkey to set commodity payment rates and purchase levels. USDA employed the same approach often used in
adjudicating World Trade Organization trade dispute cases. President Trump authorized USDA to provide up to $14.5 billion in
direct payments through MFP for 2019 to assist impacted producers.
The first payment will be comprised of the higher of either 50 percent of a producer’s calculated payment or $15 per
acre. The first payment will be made in mid-to-late August. (THAT’S THIS WEEK) MFP payments will be made in up to three
tranches (or portions), with the second and third tranches evaluated as market conditions and trade opportunities dictate. If conditions
warrant, the second tranche will be made in November, and the third in early January.
Secretary Perdue said, “ For a long time, China and other nations have not provided free, fair, and reciprocal access to U.S.
farmers and ranchers and President Trump is the first President to stand up to them and send a clear message that the United States
will no longer tolerate unfair trade practices. Our support package ensures farmers will not stand alone in facing unjustified retaliatory
tariffs while President Trump continues working to solidify better and stronger trade deals around the globe.”
NEWS FLASH - In its 2020 rankings of the "Best Colleges for Agricultural Sciences in America," Niche.com placed UGA third,
behind Cornell University at No. 1 and the University of Florida at No. 2. Texas A&M University was ranked fourth.
NEW SNACKS FILLED WITH PEANUTS - The retail pipeline is continuing to be filled with peanut products. For January through
July 2019, new peanut product launches totaled 565, with July being the most active month. Snacks remain the largest and brightest
category, increasing six percent in Q2 2019 compared to 2018, and an area that’s ripe with exciting new applications. Here are a few
brands that are pursuing innovations with peanut products to meet consumers’ needs.
General Mills’ Nature Valley brand has created a unique snack that updates the nostalgic childhood treat of the chocolate
peanut butter wafer bar. Referring to the inspiration for the new product, Carly Anderson, marketing manager for Nature Valley, said,
“the [bar] category seemed to lack in products that had both real food and sweet indulgence. And the traditional wafer had never really
been a part of the grain aisle before,”. After an exciting development process, Nature Valley Crispy Creamy Wafer Bars in peanut
butter and chocolate peanut butter flavors launched earlier this summer. In a Mintel panel, 55 percent of consumers reported that they
likely or definitely would buy this product, significantly outperforming its subcategory.
