PRACTICUM WEEK : 2

DATE : 6/8/18 – 10/8/18

JOURNAL TITLE : Classroom Rules

1. FOCUSED ISSUE

The main issue is to maintain pupils’ good behaviour in the class. Pupils’ may give their full
attention at the beginning of the class, but in order to maintain the positive behaviour,
classroom rules may be applied. During the first week, as I enter some classes for relief I
tried applying some basic classroom rules to control the pupils’ behaviour in the class. Pupils
will only obey it at the start of the class and by the end of it they will tend to forget about it.

2. ANALYSIS OF FOCUSED ISSUE

As I analysed the issue, in order to maintain a positive behaviour in the class, basic and
simple classroom rules should be applied. The rules were done based on the possible
behaviour or attitude that the pupils would portray in the class. Through this it will be easier
for them to connect with the rules and improve their behaviour.

3. LITERATURE REVIEW

According to Shalaway (2018), it is an essential in establishing general rules in a classroom.

In generating rules, one should first consider the bare essentials of rules. Adding on to it,
through selecting a few rules it can contribute to a successful learning environment. This
means that, when a successful learning environment is formed it can help in improving the
pupils’ behaviour. Other than that, these rules should be rationalised to the pupils so that
they’ll understand on why they should obey them.

4. SUGGESTION AND PROBLEM SOLVING IDEA

Based on the analysis on the issue identified, an alternative to solve this problem is by
creating short and precise classroom rules. These rules should always be displayed in the
class in order for the pupils to remember and can always recall to it if they are not behaving.
Some of the rules would be:

- Speak in ENGLISH

- Work quietly

- Raise your hand

- Walk, don’t run

- Be respectful

- Say please and thank you

- Follow instructions

5. DURATION OF COMPLETION: 1 week

6. FOLLOW-UP ACTIONS

For all the classes that I went in during the week, I would always ask the pupils to recall back
the rules without looking at it. This will help them remember it. For the future lessons, from
time to time the pupils need to recall back all of the rules in the classroom.

7. FOLLOW-UP ACTION DATE EXECUTED: 7.8.2018

8. EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROPOSED MEASURES

The action taken by me in the next relief class was a success. The pupils could remember all
the rules and they managed to obey most of it especially to speak in English in class and to
always raise their hand if they want to say something. This helps in reducing chorus
answers.

9. CONCLUSION/ REFLECTION:

I feel satisfied with the pupils’ change of attitude. Not that just they managed to improve their
attitude and behaviour but also developing good manners especially in saying thank you and
please with their classmates and the teachers.
