5.0 METHODOLOGY

5.1 Transportation and Storage of Pipes

Transportation from pipe yard to site along with arrangement of line pipe on trailers shall be
carried out in accordance with work procedure.
 All the existing access roads, crossing the pipeline Right of Way after obtaining approval

 Utmost care shall be taken during handling of the pipes.
 Lifting Hooks when used will be equipped with a plate curve to fit the curvature of the
pipe.
 Lifting hooks with Teflon pad shall be used.
 Pipes staked cross wise in for bidden.
 Stacks shall consist of limited number of layers. So, that the pressure exerted by the pipes
own weight does not cause damages to coating.
 The end of pipe will be protected by bevel protector up to stringing.
 Pipe will be carefully unloaded from trailer by means of cranes with suitable lifting device
and stringed on soft soil bags/wooden sleepers.

 The pipe shall be placed on a suitable support so that damage to the coating and
deformation of pipes can be avoided.
 Loading & unloading of pipes shall be executed by the trained personnel with special care
in order to avoid damages to coating, body and bevel of pipes.
 Supports and padding material shall be arranged so as to prevent possible movement of
cargos in order to prevent transported pipes to secure the cargo slings of wire with plastic
coating shall be used.
 A Route Risk Assessment for Transportation of Pipes have to be conducted and relevant
records must be submitted to authorized TGPL representative.

Handling & Loading in the pipe yard shall be carried out by competent riggers and crane
operators. Every effort shall be made to load the pipe at the pipe yard. The driver of the
trailer’s should have the competent licence.

5.2 Handling & Hauling of Pipes

 While loading the pipes on trucks each length will be placed to position without dropping
and each succeeding length will rest on special supports on the truck and will be
separated from the adjacent pipe.
 After loading suitable belts and padding will be used to tie the load securely to each
bolster.
 Lifting hook will be equipped with a curve plate so as to fit the curvature of pipe.
 Lifting hooks to be covered with soft material like rubber, Teflon or equivalent.
 Stacks must be properly secured against sliding and will consist of pipes of the same
diameter and the same thickness.
 Pre damaged pipes will be stacked separately in quarantine area and will be taken for
work only after repairing the same with permission of PMC. Before repair Client/TPIA
approval shall be required.
 Non metallic/Non abrasive belts of proper width may be used. If belts are used, pipe to be
stacked will be separated row by row to avoid damages by rubbing coated surface.
Slings/Belts will be cleaned to remove hard materials such as dirt, sand, gravel etc.
 Rolling, Skidding or Dragging of pipes will be strictly avoided.
 The pipe shall be stacked at a proper slope so that during rain water doesn’t collect inside
the pipe.
 The pipe shall be transported from Client yard to Torrent GAS CGD Project yard and then
from Torrent GAS CGD Project yard to ROW.

5.3 Pipe Tracking System

After receipt of pipe from client designated pipe yard, the supervisor will submit the pipe receipt
Challan in the store. The store shall maintain the pipe details in the pipe received register. Before
issuing the pipe MRIR should be signed by PMC / Client representative. Before sending pipe to

 Two guide ropes shall be attached to both end of lifting clamp.
 Stringing shall be taken up in the stretches where the ROW is graded.

Line pipe shall be unloaded from the pipe trailers and evenly strung along the ROW. The stringing
foreman is responsible for stringing the line pipe. The pipe shall be supported by sandbags/soft
soil bags free from stone and covered with a plastic film or on wooden supports or dry germ free
straw with plastic film which shall be positioned in such a way to prevent its rolling off into the
Ditch/ROW, stringing of pipe shall only be carried out in day light after clearing & grading.

The height of the supports will be minimum 500 mm and minimum two supports to be provided
on each pipe. The pipe shall be stacked as a slope so that during rain mud doesn’t collect inside
the pipes.

rolling on the sand bags/soft soil bags will be allowed in order to position the helical seam.

The pipe shall be stung along pipeline route as per specified AFC Alignment Sheets/drawings for
proper placement of pipes by spec., thickness, grade & class & other specifications. Pipe shall be
laid in such a way to minimize interference with the normal use of ROW, track, service road etc.

 Stringing shall not interfere with tarmac roads, graded roads & livestock passages.
 The stringing engineer/foreman assisted co-ordinate by a crew consisting of riggers and
crane operators shall co ordinate and control stringing operations.
 After stringing along ROW the pipes shall be checked for bevel & coating damages.
