Food Science: Job Duties and Tasks For: "Food Scientists and Technologist"
The study which consists of the physical, biological, and chemical makeup of food is called
food science. It covers the concepts underlying food processing and preservation. Various
scientific disciplines inclusive of chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and nutrition are applied
so that the safety, nutrition, wholesomeness, and availability of food are improved. The application
of these scientific disciplines to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution,
and consumption is the food technology. It includes analytical chemistry, biotechnology,
engineering, nutrition, quality control, and food safety management too.
Food science is the study of the physical, biological, and chemical makeup of food; the
causes of food deterioration; and the concepts underlying food processing.
Food scientists and technologists apply scientific disciplines including chemistry, engineering,
microbiology, and nutrition to the study of food to improve the safety, nutrition,
wholesomeness and availability of food.
Depending on their area of specialization, food scientists may develop ways to process,
preserve, package, and/or store food according to industry and government specifications and
regulations.
2) Develop food standards and production specifications, safety and sanitary regulations, and
waste management and water supply specifications.
3) Develop new or improved ways of preserving, processing, packaging, storing, and delivering
foods, using knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, and other sciences.
5) Study methods to improve aspects of foods such as chemical composition, flavor, color,
texture, nutritional value, and convenience.
6) Study the structure and composition of food, or the changes foods undergo in storage and
processing.
7) Test new products for flavor, texture, color, nutritional content, and adherence to government
and industry standards.
8) Confer with process engineers, plant operators, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing
specialists in order to resolve problems in product development.
9) Evaluate food processing and storage operations, and assist in the development of quality
assurance programs for such operations.
10) Inspect food processing areas in order to ensure compliance with government regulations and
standards for sanitation, safety, quality, and waste management standards.
Agriculture activities for growing crops, raising livestock and sea food.
Food Processing- processing fresh products into canned and packed goods,
including frozen goods.
Research development on food technology.
Manufacturing fertilizers, farm machinery and hybrid seeds to facilitate
agricultural production.
Regulation on food production and distribution to ensure quality and safety.
Financial services including insurance and credit to facilitate food
production and distribution.
Marketing, packaging, advertising and distribution (wholesale and retail).
