It’s Playtime! Sandpiper Playground Finally Opens

Just in time for the school
year to start, Sandpiper Play-
ground is complete and open
for the community to enjoy.
After several delays, the
long-awaited Sandpiper Play-
ground opened to the public
on Thursday, August 22, and
it wasn’t long before word
spread and kids filled the park,
utilizing the park’s brand-new
elements like slides, climbing
areas, water spray features,
benches, and the old wave bus
shelter. The $5.86 million pro-
ject around Beach 107th and
Shore Front Parkway was slat-
ed to be complete as the sum-
mer began in early June, but as
all things go in the city, it took
a little longer. However, after
not having a playground since
Hurricane Sandy, many in the
area are just grateful that they
can finally have a little fun on
Shore Front Parkway again.
Sandpiper Playground is one
of many Parks capital projects
planned for areas adjacent to
the boardwalk over the next
couple years. Photos by Lori Wilkins Gehlhaus and Terence Daly.

She Gave It Her Best Shot!

EMILY MCNEIL WINS THE ROCKAWAY TIMES 2019 PHOTO CONTEST

By Kami-Leigh Agard
Rockaway’s finest shutter-

in The 2019 Rockaway Times
Photo Contest—and we have
a winner! This past Saturday,
August 24 at Caracas Beach
106th Concession, after much
debate, the judges awarded the
$500 jackpot to Emily McNeil.
It was no easy feat as they had
the tough job of whittling down
the 11 finalist photos to top
three in a competition, where
every single photo truly reflect-

beauty. However, McNeil came Rockaway Beach’s ice cream

Neponsit - Second Home From The Ocean

Rockaway: Then And Now

The Marine Parkway Bridge
Drivers often wonder what’s holding up traffic. Yes, we know, sometimes
it feels like "then" is really now. These photos, courtesy of the wonderful Ol-
dRockawayPhotos.com curated by James Supple, show the Marine Parkway
Bridge through its history. Opened in 1939, the bridge connects Brooklyn to
Queens. Interesting tidbit: some member of the War Department wanted to
build a tunnel instead so as not to impede maritime traffic. (So look at the
bright side, you could be stuck in a tunnel instead!)
