CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY

Thamarappally Brothers Veneers and Panels Pvt. Ltd. is a leading
manufacturer of Wooden Products. Headquartered in Kochi, Kerala.
Thamarappally Brothers has been a dominant player in the manufacture of
Wooden Products and other products like cork, straw and plaiting materials.
Kuruvilla Kochu Thommen is the founder of the company and it has a tradition
of over 100 years in the timber and plantation industry. And it have a vision and
commitment to produce and deliver quality products adhering to International
Standards.
Mature trees are harvested from pine plantations and also from native
forests. Trees harvested at a younger age can produce smaller logs, which can be
turned into lower value products. Factors such as the site and climatic conditions,
the species, the growth rate, and silviculture can affect the size of a mature tree.
The native hardwood sawmilling industry originally consisted of small family-
owned mills, but this has recently changed to include a small number of larger
mills. The mills produce large volumes of standard products, and aim to ensure a
"standard quality of product, efficiently and safely, at low cost, with rapid
production time and high output"
Once the timber has manipulated in the required fashion, it can be used for
its purpose. There are many different purposes for wood including: plywood,
veneer, pulp, paper, particleboard, pallets, craft items, toys, instrument-making,
furniture production, packing cases, wine barrels, cardboard, firewood, garden
mulch, fibre adhesives, packaging and pet litter. Western Australia has a unique
substance called ‘bio-char’, which is made from jarrah and pine. Bio-char can be
used in the manufacture of silicone and as a soil additive. Products
From forestry and Plantations in the late 19th and early 20th century, the
Group ventured into the manufacturing and trading segment in 1959 under the
dynamic leadership of late T.K.Jacob, is also the Founder of Jacsons Group. Over
the years, they have developed various value added products for the interior and
building industry. They constantly strive to set industry benchmarks and adhere
to environment safety norms. They Introduced many Innovative products in the
market that is part of the culture. Thamarappally Brothers are the pioneers in
manufacturing and trading of various products such as K/D Furniture, Group

Thamarappally Brothers Veneers & Panels Pvt. Ltd. is classified as Non-
govt company and is registered at Registrar of Companies, Ernakulam. Its
authorized share capital is Rs. 3,000,000 and its paid up capital is Rs. 100,000.
Dilip Jacob and Thommen Jacob are the current Directors of the Company.

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

In a Wooden industry, the most important function of production department


is manufacturing Furnitures and Doors. Kiln Dry, Cutting, Machinery working
and maintenance and packing are also carried out in the production department.
Material handling is also an important function of production department. The
production department is a sensitive department since any stoppage will affect
the whole functioning of the organization.

 Printing work is done on the correct time and correct date.
 Maintain the machinery properly.
 Give proper instruction to the workers.
 Maintain the raw material for ready to producing the output.

MARKETING DEPARTMENT

Marketing is the business process by which products are matching with the
marketing and through which transfer of ownership are affected. Marketing is the
term used to describe collectively those business functions most directly
concerned with the demand – stimulating and demand – fulfilling activities of the
business enterprise.

Promotional activities of Marketing Department are:


 Advertising through Channels, Radios, Magazines, Hoardings, Notices,
etc.
 Mouth to mouth

Duties and responsibilities of Marketing Manager:


 He has the overall charge like sales promotion advertisement.
 He has to canvas the advertisement from various sources.
 He has to fix the advertisement rates.
 He has to fix the advertisement places

FINANCE DEPARTMENT

The successful running of an organization is mainly depending on the


efficient and power functioning. The effective management of finance
department is very important because it is this department that decides when to
spend and what to spend.

This department is vested with the responsibility of preparing the annual
budgets, payment of salaries to the office and management staffs, payment of all
the material purchases, preparing the balance sheet and profit and loss accounts
etc. The department also should take care of the government procedures like
payments of taxes, filling of returns.
The department is under the control of accounts officer. The department
looks the collection from the advertisement, daily and publication. It also makes
the overtime wages, provides traveling allowances.

The main Functions of Finance department are:


 The function considered being the most important of this department is to
forecast the financial needs of the company.
 To costly monitor the requirement of cash, cash flow and credit
management.
 Constantly checking the financial performance of the company.
 To prepare balance sheet and other day to day financial statements.
 To interact with the Kerala government to arrangement for funds as and
when required.

HUMAN RESOURCE AND ADMINISTRATION


DEPARTMENT

Human resource and administration department play a major role in every


organization. The successful running of an organization mainly depends upon the
efficiency and effectiveness of the department to provide and delegate quality
manpower. Human resource and administration department performs a lot of
functions.

The main functions of the department are;


 To identify the man power recruitments and make recruitments
accordingly.
 To provide effective training to the recruited staffs.
 To carry on periodical analysis of the performance of the employees.
 To ensure that promotions are provided according to the performance
report.

 To maintain good and harmonious relationship between the management
and the employees.
 To handle the grievances of the employees.
 Recruiting, selecting, Training and motivation employees to perform the
job efficiency.
 Dealing of legal and personal matter of the organization.
 Formulate the procedure of disciplinary action.
 To appoint bottom level employees.
 To maintain an overall idea about the employees.
 To deal with employees salary wages fixing leaves and attendance.
 To make an arrangement for setting the problems and grievances among
employees.

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION


When a vacancy arises, an advertisement is published in the newspaper;
applications are invited and are called for a written test and a direct preliminary
interview. Thereafter candidates who are short-listed and a direct preliminary
interview are called for a final round interview and appropriate candidates are
selected and posted as probationary officer for 2 years. Sometimes direct
recruitment is done from the department’s existing data bank. After appointing as
probationary officer, it is the duty of the Human Resource and Administration
department to provide training to the staff.

NORMAL WORKING HOUR OF EMPLOYEES


The normal working hour is 7 hours a day i.e., 9am to 5pm. The working
days of the company are from Monday to Saturday. Sunday is a holiday for
every employees.

STORE DEPARTMENT

It is the important department of any company. Mainly this dept. is the


backbone of the company. Store department deals with the export and import of
the department. The various raw materials which are used in the company comes
according to the store manager. During the packaging , if there is any requirement,

the whole requirement is convey to the store manager which arrange all the
product for the company with the help of their clients.

DEPARTMENT OF QUALITY ENGINEERING

This Department is divided into two wings,


a) Quality Engineering- Deals with the Machinery activities
b) Quality Assurance- its take of the day-to-day activities

Quality Assurance personal take cares are


a) Incoming Inspection
b) In process Inspection
c) Final Inspection

FUNCTIONS:

 Preparing control plan for incoming material


 Inspection for incoming material as per the control plan
 Conducting setup/patrol inspection as per control plan
 Inspecting and approving reworked components
 Inspecting the final product and components as per the control plan
 Raising non-conformance report for forwarding to the respective
department to initiate action.
 Analysing of customer returned goods/customer complaints
 Conducting layout inspection as per plan
 Executing measurement system analysis
 Conducting Product Audit
 Conducting Pre-Despatch inspection
 Coordinating in tool approval and subcontracts approval
 Maintaining reference samples for production and inspection

Threats. SWOT analysis – or the SWOT matrix – was developed in the 60s by
Albert Humphrey. He led a research project at Stanford University to analyze
data of the 500 largest corporations reported by Fortune magazine. As a result,
they created a method that quickly turned into an exercise used by all of the
world’s leading companies in formulating strategies.

SWOT analysis is a simple analysis system designed to check the strategic


position of a particular company in its field of operation, and because of its
methodological simplicity can be used to analyze any scenario or
environment, from the creation of a website to the management of a
multinational corporation.

Objectives of SWOT analysis:


 To make a summary analysis of external and internal factors.

 To identify key items for the management of the organization, which


involves establishing priorities for action.
 To prepare strategic options: risks and problems to solve.

 It is through analysis that we can determine the diagnosis of the company:


strengthening the positive points, indicating which points should be
improved, chances of growth, increasing opportunities, etc.
 To conduct a sales forecast in agreement with market conditions and
study the capabilities of the company in general.
 Internal environment (Strengths and Weaknesses) – the integration and
standardization of processes, the elimination of inefficiencies. Focus on

Opportunities refers to favourable external factors that could give an
organisation a competitive advantage. They are a combination of different
circumstances at a given time that offer a positive outcome, if taken advantage
of.

Learning outcomes are statements that describe significant and essential
learning that learners have achieved, and can reliably demonstrate at the end of a
course or program. In other words learning outcomes identify what the learner
will know and be able to do by the end of a course program.
It was a great experience in Thamarappally Brothers Veneers & Panels Pvt.
Ltd. This training helps me to analysis an overall study about the organisation. It
provides me an opportunity to put the knowledge into practice that had acquired
through books.

 The training helps to know how all the operations are performed in an
organisation and what will be the responsibility after joining the
company.

bright future in this field. During the running period over 100 years, the
company achieved various milestones. The high-end production technology of
the company is well acknowledged among the wood processing industries in
the country.

The TBVPPL achieved 100% utilization of raw materials due to its


integrated production system. Therefore, it would be apt to call TBVPPL, a

continuously upgrade its processes and machinery. Due to the high quality

wood industry.
The study provided useful insights into the company and its functioning. It
was a complete useful experience for me. During the 1 month study undergone at
Thamarappally Brothers Veneers & Panels Pvt. Ltd., Thellakom, Kottayam
opportunities were created to have an exposure to the management function of
departments involved in the working and management of a wooden industry. The
friendly welcoming staff and the space they have created for a trainee allowed me
with full opportunities to learn and know myself as a worker. The employees were
cordial and helping. The experience added more confidence to my professional
approach built a positive attitude and taught me how to work in team as a player.
The primary objective of an internship is to gather a real life working experience
and put their theoretical knowledge in practice.
From this internship training, I learned that this is just the beginning of the
road and I have to travel a long distance to be successful person in this business
field. This experience gave me an opportunity to learn new things which provided
me a peek into the corporate culture. As a whole it was an interesting and
informative experience in Thamarappally Brothers Veneers & Panels Pvt. Ltd.
