Democracy and Political Culture Today: A comparative study of Japan and

Philippines

ABSTRACT:
This study examines Philippines and Japan as two comparative studies for democracy and
political culture. With the spread of the concept of ‘westernization’ as prescribed by the
western powers such as the United States, Britain, and France, many countries including
Japan and the Philippines have democratized in order to modernize. Thus, this study
seeks to evaluate how democracy has played its role in the modernization of Japan and
Philippines and relate how political culture affects their individual domestic politics. This
is done by comparing both countries’ respective democracies, economies, and politics
and evaluating their strengths and weaknesses.
