CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Subject of the study

This Science Investigatory Project aims to create and come
up with a nutrient supplier for Koi by the use of lettuce through
aquaponic. This chapter represents the methods and procedures applied
in the study. The subjects of the study includes the research design,
material and procedures of the experiment, research instrument,
respondents, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment.
Research design
This study will utilize the experimental design to determine
the effectivity of the three treatments, namely; the effect of the
nutrients of lettuce roots on Koi fish, regrowing lettuce from a stem,
& The reproduction of Koi fish in water with the leaves of lettuce.

Experimental Research Design is a design that attempts to explore the

cause and effect relationship where the cause can be manipulated to
produce different kinds of effects. Through this design, information
resulting from the intervention can be obtained.

Research Environment
This study will be conducted in an open space where it is
safe to conduct a research at Ochavo’s residence. Available materials
and equipment will be obtained

Materials Equipment

5 aquariums/fish tank Sauteing Iron

Fresh water Can

5 female Koi Ruler

Raft foam Weighing scale

5 male koi Record notebook

Lettuce Air pump

20 mesh cups

Procedure

A. Making the top of the aquarium

1.) Measure the top of the aquarium in a styro board.

 2.) Trace circles in styro board from the size of the disposable
cups that will be used.
3.) Heat up a can that is just as big as the size of the cups and
push in the styro board to cut out the desired shape.

B. Making set pods

1.) Melt series of holes in the disposable cups using the sauteing
iron.
2.) Repeat the procedures to the rest of the cups. 3.) Place the
cups in the styro where the cut out circles are.

C. Preparation for the fish tank & fish

1.) Fill the tank with fresh water until reaches the top that is
enough for the cover.
2.) Place the fish inside the tank.

Experimentation #1

1.) Prepare 4 lettuce for every aquarium setup.

2.) Wash them in clear water and put them in a microwave .
3.) Cut the lettuce leaves approximately 1 inch.
4.) Carefully sprinkle the lettuce leaves to the fishes from the
top of the aquarium.
5.) Feed the fish 4 times a day. Only feed them as much as they
can in a 4-5 minute period.

Experimentation #2
A.) Preparation of the stem
1.) Cut leaves at about 1 inch from the bottom.
2.) Place the remaining stem in mesh cup.
B.) Application of the treatment
1.) Monitor under grow light or make sure they are placed ear
a windowsill.
2.) Check and change water regularly, if possible based on pH
control.
C.) Determination of the effectivity of each treatment
1.) Observe and record the length of the Koi fish per day in
7 days.
