TINA and JEN.

They sit in a tree branch.

TINA
Summer is so long.

JEN
I thought it went by quickly.

TINA
Really?

JEN
Didn’t we just get out of school?

TINA
Months ago.

JEN
But it felt like we just got out.

TINA
I’m so tired of working at the shop.

JEN
I thought you liked it.

TINA
I did. But Miss Allen is too much.

JEN
She’s fun.

TINA
When you get to leave after ten minutes.

JEN
She’s a lot.

TINA
And so is eight hours of that perky, happy sunshine.
2.

JEN
It’s about customer service.

TINA
Is it?

JEN
She’s doing that as customers come in. Shouting hi to everyone that comes in. Calling
people by name. It’s good customer service.

TINA
What if I don’t want customers?

JEN
It’s... a business.

TINA
So. They’re annoying.

JEN
Ok.

TINA
I’m just tired of it. I’m done. I’m ready for school to start.

JEN
I’m fine with it being a couple more weeks away.

TINA
A couple weeks?

JEN
Do you not know how to read a calendar?

TINA
I was just hoping it was, like, one or something.

JEN
Nope. Three.

TINA
Dang.

JEN
Maybe if you put on a Miss Allen smile, it’ll go by faster.
3.

TINA
If I have to hold that smile on my face, I will feel every second tick by from now until
then. I just want this over.

A moment.

JEN
Then school starts.

TINA
Yeah.

JEN
Senior year.

TINA
The end of the road.

JEN
What?

TINA
Education. Then it’s over.

JEN
Then college.

TINA
I don’t think so.

JEN
I thought you were coming with me.

TINA
I don’t want to move.

JEN
It’s an hour away.

TINA
I don’t want to.

JEN
You want to keep working with Miss Allen’s smile all day.
4.

TINA
Absolutely no.

JEN
Then come with.

TINA
It’ll lead to a better job?

JEN
Maybe. That’s not why I’m going.

TINA
For the guys.

JEN
No.

TINA
Then?

JEN
More.

TINA
More what?

JEN
More of anything. Everything. Not this anymore. Just like you want to get away from
the shop, do something else. That’s what I want.

TINA
You want summer to keep going.

JEN
I want my life to be summer.

TINA
No job, then.

JEN
Probably a job. One I want to do. But more than that.

TINA
You’re gonna grow up and be a better person?
5.

JEN
I hope so.

TINA
I like you how you are.

JEN
I’ll still be me.

TINA
I’ll probably still be here. Come back and visit me at the shop and I’ll give you a big
smile and call you by name. For the rest of my life.

JEN
And you’ll feel every ticking second.

TINA
I guess so.

A moment.

JEN
Ok.

TINA
Ok? That’s it? You aren’t going to change my mind?

JEN
Oh I’m gonna change your mind.
(beat)
I have time.

TINA
You have three weeks until school starts.

JEN
And all school year.

Tina just looks at Jen incredulously.

JEN
Smile!

Jen puts her fingers on Tina’s face to make her

smile.
6.

Lights down.

End.
