INTRODUCTION

The following information is intended to outline and familiarize yourself with your new Kaps-
All Easy-Kap® Capper.
The components that are installed on the Kaps-All Capper are basically all standard, requiring no
stocking of special parts. We do, however, suggest that you stock extra chuck inserts for the
chuck.
Each cap chuck insert with its corresponding chuck will accommodate a range of cap sizes.
Refer to the insert specification tables in this manual to determine which cap chuck and insert is
required for your application.
Generally, the Easy-Kap Capper can handle cap materials of metal, plastic and tin: shallow,
deep, many of the child proof caps and tamper-resistant caps. For any special applications or
designs, consult the engineers at Kaps-All Packaging Systems, Inc. for assistance.
Please remember that if there are any faulty components (such as drive motor, clutch, etc.) which
need to be replaced or repaired, call Kaps-All Packaging Systems Inc. at 631-727-0300 for
authorization to return them. The parts must be in the their original state. If it is taken apart,
opened or changed in any way, credit cannot be given since the warranty on the parts becomes
void.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS FOR

THE KAPS-ALL EASY-KAP ® HAND HELD CAPPER
(Refer to diagram 1 on page 5)

IMPORTANT: The information in this manual is important for the proper installation and
operation of this precision equipment. In order to avoid delays due to faulty installation or
operation, please see that these instructions are read by the people who will install, operate and
maintain the Kaps-All Hand Held Capper. When calling the factory always refer to the Model
and Serial numbers.

PNEUMATICS: The Models P-700 and P-700-R come complete with an air lubricator for
lubricating the motor, and a filter-regulator for adjusting the air pressure. An air pressure setting
of between 60-80 PSI is recommended. Periodically, the air lubricator reservoir needs to be
refilled with oil. Fill to level indicated on sight glass with a good quality high-speed light oil
SAE 10. It is not recommended that the drive motors be run without oil. This can damage the
motor and void the warranty. To set the oil lubricator, close the knob fully, then open 1/2 to 1
turn maximum. The unit also comes with a lock out type pneumatic switch on the air supply
regulator assembly. Shut switch off when not in use to prevent accidental starting of air motor.
Use clean, dry air at all times.
For the Kaps-All model P-700 an air pressure hook up setting of between 60-80 PSI is
recommended. This is usually regulated to 40 PSI or less with the regulator provided with the
capper. The capper will run at approximately 4.6 SCFM at 80 PSI in continuous non-stop, motor
always on operation. Actual CFM is dependant on many variables.
Variables include but are not limited to:
Torque applied, cappings per minute, Cap size and Seal type, Operator technique, etc.

Clutch/Chuck Assembly

CLUTCH OPERATION: A clutch is provided with each Easy-Kap® Capper. The Kaps-All
patented clutch is a multi-plate, slip clutch designed to give a consistent torque from capping to
capping and at the same time, minimize cap scuffing and excessive wear of the chuck insert.
This clutch is attached onto the chuck with three screws. The clutch can be separated from the
chuck and be reused for all other chucks and chuck insert sizes. If frequent chuck size changes
are made, additional clutches can be purchased allowing the chucks to remain attached to their
own clutch thereby facilitating rapid changeovers.

CLUTCH MAINTENANCE: (Refer to diagrams 2 and 3.) Torque should be checked

periodically during long-term runs. Maintenance is not required for this unit other than a bi-
monthly check for wear on the friction pads (11-009). If the pads are glazed over, they should be
replaced (check by disassembling the clutch). DO NOT LUBRICATE OR WET THE CLUTCH
FRICTION PADS.
Any lubrication will inhibit the friction capabilities of the friction pads (11-009). The friction
pads may be replaced by removing the clutch unit and disassemble to replace needed parts.
Replace the plates and pads per section 5C of the clutch rebuilding kit diagram (below). The
clutch units are designed to be free floating, therefore some wobble may be noticed, but it will
not affect the performance of the clutch. However, if excessive wobble is noticed
(approximately 1/16") the unit can be returned to Kaps-All Packaging Systems, Inc. for re-
building.

Diagram 3
Clutch Rebuild Kit

CLUTCH/CHUCK REMOVAL:
To remove the chuck/clutch assembly, remove retaining screw (5H) and slide the unit off the
driver shaft (5A).

CHUCK REMOVAL: To remove the chuck from the clutch, first remove the insert (see Chuck
Driver Insert, below), then remove the three chuck retaining screws (5K). The chuck will now
slide off the clutch.

CHUCK DRIVER INSERT: This insert is a conical disk, which turns the cap onto the
container. It is available in several sizes. Refer to the insert specification table. The insert is
held in the chuck by friction. To remove the insert, simply pull it out by working it from side to
side.

TORQUE ADJUSTING PROCEDURE: (Disconnect air supply before making adjustments)

To increase the application torque, insert the clutch adjusting tool (5F) into holes (5G) on
adjusting nut (11-010), and turn clockwise to increase the compression on the friction pads
against the springs. Make sure the clutch adjusting tool is removed before starting the Easy-
Kap® Capper. Tighten several caps and test for torque. A torque meter* or similar device
should be used. Turn the adjusting nut (11-010) counterclockwise to decrease the torque.
Repeat procedure until desired torque is obtained. Note: Cap chuck will stop turning when
torque is reached. This means it is working properly. If the clutch is not slipping this usually
indicates that the clutch torque is set too high. A torque wrench* is available to accurately set
the clutch as an option.

*FOR INFORMATION ON TORQUE METERS AND TORQUE WRENCHES, PLEASE

CONTACT KAPS-ALL PACKAGING SYSTEMS.

TORQUE INDICATING WITH TORQUE WRENCH: For critical applications where an

exact torque setting is required, a torque wrench can be used to indicate torque settings (this
8 P-700/P-700-R 7/16
©
Copyright 2006-2016 Kaps-All Packaging Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved
torque wrench is available from Kaps-All Packaging Systems, Inc.). Remove clutch/chuck
assembly from driver by removing screw (5H). Insert wrench adapter into clutch hub (5J). Turn
wrench while holding chuck/clutch assembly and note torque reading on dial. This is the setting
that the chuck/clutch assembly will slip at. Note this number for future reference. To adjust this
setting, refer to the "TORQUE ADJUSTING PROCEDURE" section in this in manual.

TORQUE RANGE: An application torque range of approximately "0" to 60 lb.-in is possible,

however in use the maximum application torque is dependent upon other factors such as
cap/container combinations and liner use. At its minimum torque limit, the adjusting nut (5G)
will be all the way at the top and approximately flush with the clutch hub (5J). If the minimum
torque capabilities of the clutch are not sufficient, remove three springs (11-011) thereby
decreasing the torque. This might be preferred for smaller diameter caps, which demand a lower
application torque.

NOTICE: The use of other than genuine replacement parts may result in decreased capper
performance, increased maintenance and may invalidate all warranties.

CAP DRIVER BALANCER: A cap driver balancer (2) is provided with each Easy-Kap®
Hand Held Capper. This balancer can either be mounted on the optional support system (1)
available from Kaps-All Packaging Systems or can be suspended from the ceiling or wall by
customer. The function of the balancer is to minimize operator fatigue by supporting the
majority of the weight rather than having it be held by the operator. To vary the tension
supporting the Capper, the balancer has a "+" and "-" tension adjustment with a ratchet action.
To reduce the tension, grasp the knob firmly, pull the knob out and turn clockwise towards the
negative. The Easy-Kap Capper will then be lower. To accommodate more weight, turn the
tension knob towards the "plus" side (counterclockwise).

PROPER OPERATOR TECHNIQUE: Both the hand capper and container will turn when
caps are tightened, therefore it is important that both are held securely. To prevent spinning, the
drive motor should be held firmly in the hand with three to four fingers. Use only one finger to
activate the stop-start lever. This will prevent the unit from jumping free from the operator's
hand during sudden stopping and starting. Extra precaution needs to be taken for higher torques
and when larger chucks are used. For any cap size over 25mm in diameter, the anti-torque arm
(3) and support stand (1) is required to prevent undue force on the operator's wrists and hands.
The container should be on a flat, level, and stable surface and held securely to prevent spinning.
Start a cap on by hand. Grasp the hand capper firmly (as above) and lower onto cap. Press down
onto cap while activating Capper. When the clutch starts slipping, capping is complete (refer to
torque adjusting procedure).

OPERATION PRECAUTIONS
1. Whenever changing a chuck or insert, make certain the Forward/Reverse switch is "OFF"
and the tool air supply is disconnected.

Copyright 2006-2016 Kaps-All Packaging Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved
2. Do not allow chemicals such as acetone, benzene, thinner, ketone, trichloroethylene or other
similar chemicals to come in contact with the hand held capper as damage will result.
3. Do not drop or abuse the capper.
4. Do not operate the Forward/Reverse switch when the motor is running.
5. Whenever the Capper is not being used, move the Forward/Reverse switch to the "OFF"
position and turn off the air supply.

EASY CAP LEVER ACTUATED STAND (Optional):

INTRODUCTION: (Refer to drawing 13-167B-P) This lever actuated stand is available as an

option to aid in the semi-automatic capping operation. It is designed to support both the weight
and torque of the Easy-Kap drive motor. This stand does not prevent the bottle from
spinning. The bottle must be secured by the operator or by some other means. The controls
(filter/regulator and lubricator) for the hand capper drive motor are normally mounted on this
stand. This unit utilizes a pneumatic valve and switch to automatically actuate the drive motor.

INSTALLATION: Place the stand on a stable worktable. It is recommended to secure the stand
to the table to prevent movement of this unit. Connect a clean dry compressed air supply to inlet
supply ON/OFF valve+ at the supply regulator. The air consumption will vary with the quantity
of cappings. Refer to the enclosed assembly diagram for parts reference.

SET UP: (Refer to drawing 13-167B-P)

1. Turn Off and Lock Out the air supply.
2. Install the appropriate cap chuck and insert (21) on the drive motor.
3. Place a capped bottle centered on the base plate (under the cap chuck).
4. Lower the chuck drive unit to almost touch the cap (the lever should need to be pulled to the
horizontal, to put down force on the cap).
5. With the bottle centered under the chuck, adjust the bottle-centering guide (22) against the
bottle and tighten the knob (H7).
6. Turn on the air supply.
7. Adjust the pressure regulator to the recommended pressure.

OPERATION:
1. Place a bottle (with a cap loosely applied) against the bottle guide (22).
2. Hold the bottle securely (when capping, the drive unit will spin down the cap and the bottle
will spin if not secured). Use caution when holding the bottle. A turning (twisting) force
is applied to the bottle.
3. Pull down on the lever knob (15). This will automatically start the drive motor.
4. Continue pulling the lever down to apply slight pressure between chuck insert and cap.
5. The clutch should stop spinning when the pre-set torque is reached.
6. Raise the lever to its uppermost position.
7. The drive motor will stop automatically.
8. Remove the capped bottle.

TROUBLE SHOOTING SECTION

EASY CLAMP BOTTLE CLAMPING PLATE: (optional) This clamping plate utilizes
one lever for quick and easy clamping of containers. With the clamping lever in the “Locked-
In” position, adjust the vertical support posts (equally spaced from the screw) to center the
container neck under the capping chuck. Refer to diagram 1 below. In cases of offset bottle
necks, position the vertical support posts in an offset fashion to accommodate the container so
that the neck is centered under the capping chuck. Next, turn the adjusting knobs to adjust the
width of the post holders. The scale reading for both the left and right post holders should be
equal. Open the lever and position a container between the vertical posts. Close the lever.
There should be a slight pressure to grip the container. Make certain that when the bottle cap
is turned, slippage of the bottle is avoided. Re-adjust the adjusting knobs as needed.

Operation:
Open the lever.
Start a cap on the container.
Place the container between the vertical posts.
Close the lever to the “Locked-In” position.
Lower the feed handle of the capper. The motor will start automatically.
Apply downward pressure in a smooth and steady motion.
The capper clutch will slip at the pre-set torque.
Raise the feed handle. The motor will stop.
Open the clamp lever and remove the container.
