WORSHIP SCHEDULE
SUNDAY MORNING
WORSHIP SERVICES
10:30 - 11:30 A.M.
SEPTEMBER 1, 2019
12th Sunday After Pentecost
Lord’s Supper - by Intinction
If the travels of Flat Jesus are any indication, many of us had an adventure filled few
months. He made his way around Butler, visiting the Butler Little Theatre as well as
Alameda Park to play on the purple playground. He went a little farther to Pittsburgh
for a Pirates game and to visit the zoo, and on a family trip to Erie. He went to Ohio
for a quilting contest, to Indiana for Triennium, and to Atlanta for a clergy conference.
He found his way to Myrtle Beach and Seattle. He helped with more mundane things
like college visits, doctor’s appointments, and church meetings, and also go to do
exciting things like go on a New England cruise, see Barry Manilow in concert in Las
Vegas, and spend three weeks in Hawaii! And so much more! We were busy!
But as teachers have been reminded as students prepare to head back to school,
summer isn’t always great for everyone. Many of us have had a summer filled with
grief, heartache, medical issues, and pain. For some, it’s been a traumatic season filled
with despair and confusion, and maybe even anger toward God. Rather than wishing
summer would last forever, some of us are thankful that we can put it all behind us.
Whether your summer was full of joy or sorrow, the author of Ecclesiastes reminds us
that there is a time for everything. A time for crying and a time for laughter; a time to
hold on and a time to let go; a time for joy and a time for sorrow.
Wherever you have found yourself this summer – in a space that has been difficult for
a space filled with celebration – know that God has been with you through it all. And
as we move forward into the fall, into new routines, new relationships, and a new
season, know that God will be with you then, too. In all times and all places, God is
there.
May you feel God’s presence and abiding Spirit in the days and weeks to come.
Peace-
Pastor Leigh

WEDNESDAY ON THE HILL IS BACK! We kick off on Wednesday, September 18 for nine
weeks of good friends, great food and exciting explorations into the
Bible. We have a new resource for our studies this year- we have
become a BOLT club. BOLT stands for Bible Centered — God has
given us His Word in order to equip us to learn to live like Jesus. (2
Timothy 3:16-17) Outreach Focused — We are called to reach out
into our community and share Jesus with everyone. (Matthew 28:19-
20) Life Skills Learned — We need to develop life skills as created
beings, in order to do good, bless our community, build relationships,
and share the gospel. (Ephesians 2:10) Transformation Experienced — When we
trust in Jesus, He transforms (or changes) us to be more like Him. (Romans 12:2). Our Bible units are
awesome this fall- What is the Bible? and Women of Faith. Since BOLT clubs do both Scripture study
and Life Skills training, this fall our Life Skills are Music (Pre-K-Grade 2) and Art and Mad Science for
grades 3-8. Watch this space for info about out final night’s indoor picnic and a music, art and science
fair.
TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Too violent? Too scary? Not timely
for today’s Christian? No! We are prepared to take on all the myths and
misunderstandings about the book of Revelation! Our group begins meeting on
September 10 in our new location – The Annex outside the Education and Music
offices. We will look into the various methods for interpreting this interesting piece of Scripture and
search out its meaning for the first readers and how it can speak to our lives as well.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Our Wednesday on the Hill program could use two volunteers on our
Kitchen Crew. This group of men and women are a happy band of hard-working
chefs and cleaners who provide us excellent food and fellowship time weekly. You
should plan to be here from 5-7 pm weekly. Please let Gerry Graham or Sharon
Montag know if you can help. We are also seeking helpers for registration. This is a
short but important job. Plan to be here from 4:30 – 5:30 to record attendance, collect
dinner money and MOST IMPORTANT welcome our students back for another great
week at Hill Church. Let Nancy Daugherty know if you can help.
Our Thank Offering service will be held on September 22nd. We are pleased to be welcoming
Cantor Michael Gray-Schaffer as our guest speaker.
The Beaver-Butler Presbyterian Women’s Fall Gathering will be held on September 28th from
9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Old Union Presbyterian Church. All women are welcome to attend.
Please call Bea Welch or Ruth Scott if you plan to attend. The fee for the gathering is $10.00.
Our Women’s Fall Salad Luncheon will be held on October 12th. All women are invited to
attend and hear Pastor Leigh speak on “prayer beads”. Please see future bulletins and the
October newsletter for more information.
We’ve all been frustrated getting stuck behind a bus or having to go slowly through a school
zone. During those times we can take the opportunity to pray for all the students, teachers,
and other faculty. Take a few moments to pray for…
1. The safety to all school bus drivers and their riders and those bringing and picking
children up at school.
2. Students to be able to withstand peer-pressure.
3. Peace and joy in the homes of all students, teachers, and faculty.
4. Protection on the playgrounds and during extra-curricular activities.
5. Students to have respect for all in authority over them.
6. Parents, teachers, students, and faculty to experience the love of Jesus Christ.
7. Protection from hate, envy, jealousy, greed, and selfishness.
8. Students to refrain from alcohol, drugs, and violence.
9. Teachers to experience God’s leadership as they teach.
10. Parents and guardians as they care for the children and balance their extra-curricular
activities and daily lives.
