PACE Syllabus 2019 - August16
PACE Syllabus 2019 - August16
PACE 101 is a required course for all first-year students during their first semester at Emory. This course is worth
one academic credit and introduces students to critical Emory College policies and procedures as well as academic
and extracurricular opportunities on and off campus.
The PACE 101 course has three overarching goals and learning outcomes:
1. Emory Community Development: Students form connections with faculty, staff, and peers, and establish
relationships that will support their academic and social goals.
2. Personal Development: Students learn to take ownership of their own learning experience and begin to
develop greater self-understanding.
3. Practical Knowledge: Students will gain the skills to navigate life as a college-level student, maximizing their
personal and Emory community development.
Facilitators
Each PACE 101 section is facilitated by an Emory University staff member. Please check your OPUS schedule for
Facilitator name and contact details. Your PACE Facilitator IS NOT your advisor of record. Check OPUS for your
assigned Pre-Major Faculty Advisor and OUE Academic Advisor.
Enrollment Policy
PACE 101 is a required course for first-year students.
Students may only enroll in one section of PACE 101.
Students are not permitted to withdraw from PACE 101.
Students may not retake PACE 101 during a later semester.
Grading
PACE 101 is graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis.
Students will receive one academic credit hour for completing PACE 101 course.
Students must earn 220/250 points to earn a passing grade of “S”. Failure to earn at least 220 points will
result in a non-passing grade of “U”.
Students will earn mandatory and flex points for class attendance, out-of-class assignments and completion
of surveys. See Attendance, Assignments and Surveys sections of the syllabus for details about points.
Mandatory points are attendance, assignments or surveys that MUST be completed to pass PACE 101. Flex
points are attendance, assignments or surveys that students should complete, and are the remainder of the
points students need to earn to pass PACE 101.
Students must complete 90 mandatory points to pass PACE 101. Students must also earn at least 130 flex
points to pass PACE 101.
Canvas
The PACE 101 homepage in Canvas gives students access to all of the course requirements and resources. Students
are responsible for reviewing the Canvas site to locate the course syllabus, weekly PowerPoint presentations and
assignments including: online modules/activities, out-of-class activities schedule and reflection forms, and other
posted resources.
Student Workbook
Every student will receive a PACE 101 Workbook at the first class meeting. Students are expected to bring the
workbook to class each week in order to participate in reflection, exploration and planning activities. A PDF version
of the workbook will be available in the Canvas site.
Surveys Links
Students will be asked to complete three surveys throughout the fall semester. Students will receive a unique email
link for each survey. Students MAY NOT forward their survey links as they are tied to their student ID numbers. If
the email or personal link is lost, a web link to the survey will be available in the Canvas site.
Attendance: 125 Points (25 mandatory points and 100 flex points)
Weekly Attendance
PACE Classes meet once a week (Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays) from August 28- November 22. Students are
expected to attend each week of PACE 101. All students should attend a PACE 101 section the first week of class,
regardless of students' schedules.
Attendance in Weeks 2-12 are worth 10 points each (up to 100 points) and are included in flex points
Attendance in Week 13 is worth 25 points and is mandatory
Absences
Students may miss up to 30 total points. As each class attendance weeks 2-12 is worth 10 points, students may miss
up to three classes (depending on completion of other assignments). If a student misses class, it is expected that
they communicate with their Facilitator as soon as they know they will be missing class (ahead of time is preferred,
but within 24 hours of class meeting time if prior notification is not permissible). There is no make-up for missed
classes, but students are expected to review class material in Canvas.
Student-Athletes
Student-athletes with practices or games conflicting with the PACE 101 course are advised to change PACE 101
sections. If there is a problem with switching sections, speak with your PACE Facilitator as soon as possible. If
your practices/game schedule causes you to miss more than three classes, you need to swap sections. This should
be handled before the end of Add/Drop/Swap. If you need assistance finding a section that meets your
practice/game needs, please contact Tina McDowell immediately: tmcdowe@emory.edu
Students will complete a number of online assignments (activities, modules and reflections) throughout the

(tmcdowe@emory.edu) before the event or within 24 hours of the event (if an absence is unexpected due to illness).
Classroom Policies
Academic Integrity
The Honor Code applies to all work submitted for courses in Emory College, including PACE 101. Students who violate
the Honor Code may be subject to a written mark on their record, failure of the course, suspension, permanent
dismissal, or a combination of these and other sanctions. Students should be aware of the following policies that
apply, specifically to PACE 101:
1. All online assignments, surveys, attendances, and participation should be the student’s own.
2. No student may copy, use another student’s answers or earn attendance credit for another student.
3. A student must be present in class/activities to receive attendance credit.
4. Students may not sign-in for another student.
Students caught participating in fraudulent acts of signing-in each other into events will be sent to the Emory College
Honor Code Committee and will receive a grade of “U” for PACE 101.
Please note that accommodations are not retroactive and that disability accommodations cannot be provided until
an accommodation letter is processed. Students registered with OAS who have a letter outlining their academic
accommodations, are strongly encouraged to coordinate a meeting time with your professor that will be best for
both to discuss a protocol to implement the accommodations as needed throughout the semester. This meeting
should occur as early in the semester as possible. Contact Office of Accessibility Services for more information at
(404) 727-9877 or accessibility@emory.edu. Additional information is available on the OAS
website at http://equityandinclusion.emory.edu/access/students/index.html.
