Objectives of the OPERATIONAL INTERNSHIP and Targeted skills

Global objectives of the OPERATIONAL INTERNSHIP


 Develop self-reliance and sense of responsibility in an operational position working on an assignment geared
towards:
Sales / Marketing /Management/Finance / Purchasing - Logistics / HR/ Communication, etc.

 Gain your first experience in line with your career project in terms of:
 Knowledge, discovery and understanding of a particular sector, function, position, organization or geo-

cultural zone.
 Skills development: business, technical, transversal, human relations

 Increased professional, technical, transversal and interpersonal skills

 Development of your network

Targeted skills, in accordance with the learning objectives of the program

 Be capable of integrating and using knowledge proper to each discipline in order to resolve functional and
transversal issues, and know how to use team spirit in order to work well in a team

 Have an international approach and perspective (if the mission is of an international nature).

 Be an effective Communicator.

 Be capable of identifying and evaluating questions of an ethical nature relevant to the company and to its
strategy in terms of social responsibility.

 Know how to efficiently find and use information needed to study and find solutions to problems within the
company.

Key stages in the Internship

Your operational internship, the midway professional experience of your study program, is also your springboard to
your Executive Internship.
The aim here is to give you all the conditions necessary to ensure the success and valorization of this experience.

There are three main phases to this internship:

The integration period:

The first few weeks are crucial to the success of your internship.
At this stage it is essential to ensure that you have:
- Gained a clear understanding of the context in which the company operates; its internal organization, its
operating methods, the procedures to be followed etc.
- Successfully integrated the organization and the team ;
- Established a structured and constructive relationship with your hierarchical superior/internship supervisor ;
- Clarified your duties and activities, your objectives, performance indicators, the expectations related to your
post.

The Assessment Form

At the end of the first 3 months, you are strongly advised to fix a final appraisal appointment with your hierarchical
superior/internship supervisor so that you can:
- Discuss the mid-term actions accomplished and results obtained, analyze any gaps and the difficulties you have
encountered
- Assess the skills observed during this period, identify your strong points and areas for improvement as well as
any training or assistance required to enable you to carry out your mission successfully

This final appraisal should enable you to develop a constructive discussion with your supervisor, to share a common
vision of your activity, your achievements, your difficulties and also of your expectations and those of your superior
for the forthcoming weeks.
The meeting should also enable you to enhance your own self-assessment, to clarify your priorities for the rest of the
internship and to define your action plan.

The End of Internship Appraisal

This appraisal should enable you to demonstrate your capacity to:

 Understand and analyze the company, its activity, organization, operating methods, environment and its

stakeholders with a general view of its activity sector ;


 Make the link between your theoretical studies of business and management and company practices ;

 Take a critical approach and make recommendations;

 Describe and situate your mission within the company in terms of objectives, achievements, and expected

results ;
 Identify your contribution to the company’s performance, to the activity of your department, internal and

external customer satisfaction and the ways in which problems are solved ;
 Make a critical analysis of your action, your successes and failures and your difficulties;

 Analyze what you have learnt from this experience :

o Identify and illustrate the skills you have developed ;


o Assess the extent to which this experience contributes to the confirmation and implementation of
your Professional Project.

 Be able to showcase this experience as part of your personal branding strategy ;

 Develop effective written skills.

Your appraisal will be based on 2 exercises:

 The Appraisal interview with your hierarchical superior/internship supervisor : The


Assessment form – “operational” internship - must contain the completed and co-signed
document.

internship report : your analysis of the company and its context - paper format to the Registry,
If these are sent by post, the postmark will be accepted as proof of date of despatch.
No report sent by email will be accepted.

Introduction: briefly present your internship and your mission, and put it into perspective in relation to your
professional project: this should highlight the relevance of this internship as a useful part of your career pathway

I. Analysis of the company: (4 pages)


 Brief presentation of the company*, its sector of activity, its products, its services, its main competitors:
2 pages maximum In the appendices: facts and figures, organizational chart…
 Analysis of the internal organization: internal operating system, decision making, managerial practices ;

*according to the size of the company, the analysis may focus on the whole company (if it is a small/medium-
sized company) or a section of the company (branch, agency, shop, department…) if the company is a national
or international enterprise.

This part is designed to allow you to demonstrate your capacity to understand and analyze the company, its activity
and its organization.

II. Your contribution within the company (8 pages)


 Reminder of your initial mission and objectives ;
 Your integration within the company: factors which contributed towards your integration, an analysis of any
difficulties encountered;
 The challenges of your mission within the framework of the activity of your department, of the company on
a commercial, financial or human level etc.
 A summary table showing: objectives/means put into operation/results obtained (performance indicators);
 A gap analysis, an analysis of the difficulties encountered ;
 Summary, in a few lines, what your contribution to the performance of the company or the department was.

This part seeks to allow you to demonstrate your capacity to identify your contribution to the activity or the
performance of the company, your ability to integrate and use subject-specific knowledge to solve functional and
transversal issues.

III. Links between theory and practice (4 pages)

 Identify the business and management knowledge that you have acquired and which you called upon
while carrying out your mission;
 Identify the business and management knowledge that you lacked in order to be efficient in your mission;
 Explain your observations of theory and practice: what you noticed, what surprised you

IV. The benefits of this experience and your career Project (8 pages)
Skills developed:

You will particularly highlight:


 Technical professional skills: Learning a profession and its particularities, specific tools (software, control
systems etc.);
 Methodological skills: Organization of work, time management, information management….
 Transversal skills.

You will illustrate these skills using examples of concrete situations and you will correlate your self-assessment and
your internship supervisor’s assessment of your performance.

Knowledge and understanding of a particular job role

Drawing upon your observation of the professional activity within your department and of your line manager, describe
the main professional characteristics of your post or that of your line manager.

The impact of this internship in the construction of your personal and professional project, and in your future
choices. You will develop and justify:

 How this experience has reinforced or modified your personal and professional project in the short and
middle-terms;
 Your future action plan.

TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR REPORT:

 The presentation of the report should be clear;


 Number the pages and respect the coherence of the entire text.

Make sure that equal space is given to each of the three sections within the report.

 Indicate clearly the reminders or referrals to the appendices.

The Appendices should be numbered and each should have a heading.

 Respect the same logic throughout the report;


 Pay attention to your writing style: be clear, precise and concise;

Use short sentences, space the text out well. Use of the first person permitted;

 Pay particular attention to spelling and style of expression;


 Indicate all your sources (ATTENTION TO PLAGIAT)
