Assignment - I (21 August 2019, due date: 28 August 2019)

! oC is moved to a room at 30
Q.1) 900 gm of water at 10 ! oC. What is the net
change in entropy of the room if water need 1500 Joule/mol of heat to make the
required change in the temperature?

Q. 2) A block of metal at temperature T=200K is kept in contact with a thermal

reservoir until it reaches equilibrium. If the amount of heat needed to change
the temperature of the metal block by an infinitesimal amount from T to T+dT
! = 3αT 2 dT. Find the temperature of the reservoir.
is given by dq

Q.3) An ideal gas at T=300K is kept in a container of volume 1.0 liter.

Container is allowed to expand to 2.0 liter such that the work done by the gas is
zero (expansion against vacuum, external pressure = 0.0 atm). Is this process
irreversible, why? Compute the change in the entropy of the whole universe in
this process.

Q. 4) Two metal blocks, one at 300K and the other at 50K, are brought in
contact with each other. After a while, the two blocks reach a thermal
equilibrium by exchange of heat. Is this process reversible? If the heat required
to change temperature from T to T+dT is dq = α1dT for one block and
dq = 2α2TdT for the other block, what is the net heat exchanged between the
two blocks? Assume that there is no change in the volume of the blocks as they
approach equilibrium and there is no other exchange of energy except between
the two blocks. Take α1 = 100 joule/K and α2 = 25 joule/K2.

Q. 5) What is the total entropy change in the process of reaching equilibrium in

the Q. 4)?
