 Reference.
HYBRID VEHICLE DEFINITION :
 Hybrid: A Vehicle With Two Sources Of Power.

 Coupling An IC Engine With:

1. Electric Motor/Generator.
2. Hydraulic Pump/Motor.

 Energy storage:
1. Electric: Batteries.
2. Hydraulic: Accumulator.
3. Others: Flywheels,Capacitors,Springs.
WHY HYBRIDIZE A POWERTRAIN ?
 Recapture Kinetic Energy During Braking.
 Automatically Turn off Engine When Stopped.

 Run Engine At Peak Efficiency.

 High Peak Power.

WHAT IS HHVS ?
 HHVs, Like All Hybrid Vehicles, Use Two
Sources Of Power To Drive The Wheel. In
Hydraulic Hybrid, Pressurized Fluid Is Used As
Secondary Source Of Power.
WHY HHVS ?
 Increasing Fuel Demand.
 Completely Green Solution Are Not Yet
Practical.
WHY HHVS ARE SO EFFICIENT ?
 Regenerative Braking.
 Shutting Engine Off When Not Needed.

 Optimum Engine control.

TYPES OF HHVS

1. Parallel System 2. Series System

HOW HHVS WORK
 During Accelerating.
 During Cruising.

 During Braking.
HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR

 A Hydraulic Accumulator Is A Pressure Storage

Reservoir In Which A Non-
Compressible Hydraulic Fluid Is Held Under
Pressure That Is Applied By An External
Source. The External Source Can Be A Spring,
A Raised Weight, Or A Compressed Gas.
 An Accumulator Enables A Hydraulic System
To Cope With Extremes Of Demand Using A
Less Powerful Pump, To Respond More Quickly
To A Temporary Demand, And To Smooth Out
Pulsations. It Is A Type Of Energy
Storage Device.
 Compressed Gas Accumulators, Also Called
Hydro-Pneumatic Accumulators, Are By Far
The Most Common Type.
MAIN PARTS OF VEHICLE
MOTOR OR PUMP
IN PARALLEL SYSTEM
 The Pump/Motor Is Typically Installed Between
The Engine And Gearbox, Or Between The
Gearbox And Differential Transmission Box.
 The Role Of Pump/Motor Is To Provide
Assistance To The Engine During Acceleration
And Recapture Energy Under Braking That
Would Otherwise Be Lost As Heat In The
Conventional Brakes. As With Electric Hybrids,
 The Pump/Motor May Or May Not Be Able To
Drive The Vehicle Alone With The Engine Off.
MOTOR OR PUMP
IN SERIES SYSTEM
 The Pump/Motor Directly Connects To The
Driveshaft, Or The In-Wheel Motors Provide Driving
Torque Directly To The Wheel.
 The Internal Combustion Engine Is Only Connected
To A Pump, And Is Set To Operate In Its Most
Efficient Power Range To Maintain The Optimal
Hydraulic Pressure In The Accumulator.
 The Traction Motor Must Supply All The Torque
Required To Propel The Vehicle, Meaning Maximum
Acceleration Performance Is Available With The
Engine Running Or Stopped.
 Its Main Disadvantage Is In Steady-State Cruising,
Where The Double Conversion Of Energy Introduces
Additional Losses.
BEST APPLICATIONS FOR
HYDRAULIC HYBRID ?
Typically Large Vehicles
HYDRAULIC V/S ELECTRIC
REGENERATION
HYDRAULIC V/S ELECTRIC
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
 High Cost Of Accumulators.
 Chances Of Explosion Due To High Pressure.
