What's more, recent New Zealand research
has found sleep makes a big difference when it
comes to preventing childhood obesity.
Dr Taylor said research he's involved in shows
getting a good night's sleep halved the rate of
obesity for children at both two and five years

to Deepinderjit Singh, who is a mechanical
engineer and she calls him her best friend,

from different age groups joining the event, practising
yoga with Dianne, getting a meditation shot and walking
away with green smoothie. The Y family is passionate
about the community and they go an extra mile to assist
each member at YMCA. In the event they performed a

India, Australia election officials Jaishankar discusses preparatory

Australian election officials joined their
Indian counterparts here on Tuesday to
discuss the future of electoral democracy,
with a focus on issues such as increasing
voter participation, the merits of electronic
voting and counting; and political funding,
disclosure and compliance.

Institute partnered with the Trivedi Centre
for Political Data at Ashoka University to
exchange knowledge and insights about
the recent national elections that recently
took place in both nations. The Forum was
supported by the Australian Department of
Foreign Affairs.
Speaking in this context, Election
Commissioner of Victoria (Australia),
Warwick Gately told ANI, "A very
worthwhile and informative engagement
took place with the officials from the
Election Commission of India. We learnt
very much."
Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the
University of Melbourne's School of
Government Tom Daly said that the Forum
is an important opportunity for knowledge
exchange, building on the University's
already strong relationship with India.
"India is the world's largest democracy and
there is a lot Australia can learn from its
latest election. Likewise, we will be able
to share our insights from our national
election in May," Daly stated.
"The University of Melbourne has
partnerships with a number of leading
institutes in India, and our academics are
working with their Indian colleagues across
significant research projects. The Election
Watch Forum is another positive step in
strengthening our partnership."

Commission in India for its support and
participation in the Forum," he added.

Boris Johnson calls India-Pak to resolve Kashmir issue

W hile making it clear to Prime
Minister Narendra Modi that the
UK views Kashmir issue as a bilateral
matter between India and Pakistan,
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has
underlined the importance of resolving
issues through dialogue.
During a telephonic conversation, earlier
on Tuesday, the two leaders discussed
the current situation in Kashmir along
with the importance of the India-UK
partnership.
"The Prime Minister and Prime Minister
Modi discussed the current situation in
Kashmir," the Prime Minister's Office said
in a statement.
"The Prime Minister made clear that the
UK views the issue of Kashmir is one for
India and Pakistan to resolve bilaterally,"
the statement read.
"He underlined the importance of
resolving issues through dialogue," it
added.
The telephonic conversation came against
the backdrop of the Indian government's
historic decision to revoke of Jammu and
Kashmir's special status under Article 370.
"Prime Minister Modi began by
congratulating the Prime Minister on his
appointment," 10 Downing Street said.
"Prime Minister Modi said there are
immense possibilities for the UK and
India which would increase prosperity in
both countries," it added.
The telephone conversation came ahead
of the G7 meeting in France that is
scheduled to take place over the weekend,
where the two leaders will meet for the
first time since Johnson became the Prime
Minister of Britain.
Therefore their discussions also covered
the summit in Biarritz and the issue of
importance to both nations.
Johnson regretted the incident and
assured that all necessary steps would be
taken to ensure safety and security of the
High Commission.
Followingly, Modi, on his part, stressed
the importance of effective steps to ward
off the threats posed by radicalisation,
violence, and intolerance, particularly in
the context of the expanding footprint of
terrorist organisations such as the Islamic
State or ISIS.

Government plan to reduce digital detox while traveling
Maori prison numbers
The government has started actioning
on a plan to reduce the number of Maori
prisoners in New Zealand prisons which is
currently sitting at a staggering 52 percent
(of total prison population) to bring it
down to 16 percent to match it in the
ratio of Maori population in country. New
Zealand Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis
announced this plan in the Parliament
that a strategy has been planned to treat
all the prisoners with respect and uphold
their mana-like prisoners are also worthy of
dignity and care.
The department of Corrections has been
advised to start working on the plan to
treat the inmates with respect and to give
them more access to whanau. The five-year
plan/strategy called Hokai Rangi, has this
very ambitious goal of bringing down the
prison population of Maoris drastically
and giving Maori prisoners more access
to whanau. The plan outlines the overall
changes to be done, to the way the prisons
are run. Whanau of inmates will be able to
get more access now to even rehabilitation
programmes in the community if they
wish to. The stress is being given more on
a better interaction between whanau and
the inmates by allowing more visits to
family and more phone calls to whanau
while inside the prison. To balance the new
strategy other prisoners (non- Maoris) will
also get the similar treatment along-with
Maoris prisoners. Correction Minister said
though it was designed to keep Marois in
focus, but similar treatment will be given to
other prisoners also.
The idea behind the new strategy is to treat
a criminal with more humane approach,
a prisoner is a person who committed a
crime due to his/her circumstances so the
accused need to be treated as well apart
from being punished for their crime. So far,
the approach of the Correction Department
has been to punish the prisoners for their
crime, but this has not worked so well. So,
in Hakai Rangi, greater commitment will
be given on rehabilitation and reintegration
programmes. The Kapaupapa Maori space
and service concept will be rolled out in
all the prisons. The Minister has retreated

well. This was a very long-standing demand
of Maori community for many decades
to apply the Treaty of Waitangi in letter

new strategy along with the Correction
department keeping in mind the Maori
values and beliefs. The current system has
been in place for very long time and has not
worked for Maoris, so it required an urgent
revisit to make it suitable to the majority
prison population. The more interaction
of the inmates with the families and the
community will reduce the chances of that
person of re-offending as then sense of
belonging and sense family will discourage
them to do so. This way people can be
prevented from being harmed.
It is indeed a very commendable approach
of the government to handle this delicate
issue with a human approach and would
spread message across the community of
how important the relations within the
community are. The government is of the
view that the new strategy will underpin
transformative and intergenerational
change for those in our care and with their
whanau.
Though the government has been bit
slow and cautious on taking a decision
after Waitangi Tribunal had released a
damming report, two years back saying, the
Corrections Department had no specific
plans to reduce Maori reoffending but it
always better late than never. A common
New Zealander would want to see the
Hokai Rangi working for all inmates Maori
or otherwise. It will not only bring down
the crime rate in the country but also add
to the productivity of country. It is never
a good idea for any country that its large
number of their young population should

peace, harmony and added productivity

of victims while ensuring we safely and
effectively reduce crime and reoffending.
It’s not fair that our communities should
have to undertake the risk and burden
of offenders that are usually confined to
our prison system. We are committed to
putting offenders on a better path in life
and ensuring they don’t reoffend. That’s
why when National was in Government
we made a record investment in
rehabilitation and reintegration – with a
focus on education and employment.
The Labour-led Government pledged to
reduce the prison population by 30 per
cent over 15 years. The only plan they
have to meet this political target is to
soften our bail, parole and sentencing
laws to make it easier for criminals to
get out of prison early, and harder for
them to be sent there in the first place.
Offenders do not just vanish into thin
air. If they aren’t in prison, they’re in our
communities.
The latest Ministry of Justice: Justice
Sector Projections show that a fall in
short-term prison sentences is matched
by a rise in community sentences. So,
while the prison population has reduced,
the percentage of parole approvals and
offenders on the streets, has increased by
almost 60 per cent since 2017. That means
more offenders in our communities
to which the stubbornly high rate of
reoffending of over 17 per cent will apply.
It’s not just low-level offenders the
Government is keeping out of prison. The
report showed prison sentences given for
category 3 offences, such as aggravated
assault, kidnapping or threatening to kill
was only 1 per cent this year compared to
the 4.5 per cent that was projected.
Our prison system is designed to ensure
offenders are held responsible for the
harm they have caused their victims,
but also to ensure they have access to
rehabilitation in prisons to ensure when
they are released, they won’t reoffend.
Therefore, if offenders are being released
into community programmes earlier,
they will not necessarily have had the
full rehabilitation and reintegration
services that they would have otherwise
received in prison, and this can mean that
reoffending rates could be higher.
No one denies that having fewer
people going to prison is desirable.
But the only viable way to achieve
this is through prevention and grass
roots intervention before people go
on a criminal path. National’s social
investment approach was implementing
these early intervention methods, but
this Government scrapped it out of
pure political spite and ideology. This
Government’s approach of fielding off
offenders into communities is a lazy non-
solution to corrections in this country.

opens a $40 million
boutique hotel in
Christchurch
Sudima Hotel, the first hotel chain in New Zealand to be carboNZero
certified opened its new $40 million luxury boutique hotel in
Christchurch on August 8.
The hotel's chief executive Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala said, the certification
means it has committed in various ways to reducing its carbon
emissions and buying carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions
so that it is effectively carbon neutral.
Located on the corner of Victoria and Salisbury streets, the hotel
launched with full fanfare and Christchurch’s glitterati in attendance.
Present with the gracious host Sudesh and his charming wife Laxmi
Jhunjhnuwala were their beautiful daughters Kanika and Vedika
Jhunjhnuwala.
With 86 rooms that comprise 45 king rooms, 33 twin rooms, six

Indian women move to New York calling

T he Indian women's hockey team
on Tuesday moved to the final of
the Olympic Test Event after playing a
goalless draw against China at the Oi
Hockey Stadium here.
The Indian side looked in good rhythm
during the initial stages of the first
quarter and constantly built pressure on
the Chinese squad.
They rotated the ball well to secure a
penalty corner in the eighth minute but
failed to score as Chinese goalkeeper
Dongxiao Li deflected a shot.
The Chinese team tried to launch an
attack but could not find an opening in
the first quarter.
The Indian women started the second
quarter with attacking flair and won
themselves their second penalty
corner in the 17th minute. Gurjit Kaur
attempted to find the target but was

The second quarter saw both the teams
battle it out in midfield, with neither side
giving much space to their opponents.
Unlike India, which is the world number

In the third quarter, China came close
to taking the lead in the 41st minute
through their first penalty corner, but
Indian goalkeeper Savita made a great
save.
The Chinese were awarded their second
penalty corner in the 47th minute, but
Savita again came to India's rescue and
denied the world number 11 team a
chance to net the ball.
India also had a few chances to take the
lead in the following minutes, but could
not find the breakthrough as Chinese
defended well.
The match became tense for both the
teams in the last few minutes with China
bagging back-to-back penalty corners
with just two minutes remaining on the

wear thin. Djokovic’s opponent in last
year’s final- Argentina’s Juan Martin del
Putro has unfortunately pulled out of

knee. Alongside Rafael Nadal and Roger
Federer, another name being talked up
as a contender for the US Open is 23 year
old German Alexander Zverev. He hails
from a Tennis family; both of Zverev’s
parents and elder brother have also

dominated by Djokovic, Federer, Nadal
and to a lesser extent by Englishman

considered the most vibrant of all Slams.
America likes to do things on lavish and
attention grabbing scales. US Open is no
different – from the colourful attires of
the players that make fashion statements,
to top Hollywood stars in attendance,
this Slam has it all. The games are played
during both day and night sessions.
Evenings are where the big matches are
scheduled for.
The stage is set for a fortnight of excellent
tennis. New York will hopefully see
established masters of the sport in full
flow, being challenged by a new wave of
emerging talent. Hopefully the event lives
up to the hype- the next two weeks hold
