Salt Formation

Module 8
Felix Harianto-8D

Purpose
To observe salt formation by neutralization reaction.

Apparatus
a.Burette d.Hydrohloric acid (HCI) g.AgNO3
b.Glass rod e.Universal indicator h.Flask
c.Beaker f.Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) i.Bunsen

Methods
a. Place hydrochloric acid in a burette.

b. Measure out 20 cm3 of sodium hydroxide in a flask and make volume variation.

c. Add a few drops of universal indicator.

d. Add the acid from the burette slowly, swirl the flask (moving it gently around) as you add the
acid.

e. When universal indicator changes the colour, you have produced a neutral solution.

Result table
No. NaOH Volume (ml) Water Volume (ml) Phenomenon (number of
drops)

1 5 5 120 drops

2 8 2 98 drops

3 7 3 100 drops

4 10 0 48 drops

Discussion
Questions:

a. What colour is the universal indicator solution in the sodium hydroxide neutral?

b. What salt is formed in this reaction? Write the word equation for this reaction.

Answer:
a.Purple-pink ish
b.NaOH + HCI > NaCI + H2O

Conclusion
Salt can be prepared by neutralization reaction hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide . The universal
indicator changes the colour as the reaction proceed.
