STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIAL

A Life Full of Mixtures

Prepared by:
ROVELYNE A. DE LUNA
Teacher II
Our goals are the
following:

1. Describe the appearance and uses of a

solution;

2. Differentiate solute from solvent; and

3. Identify the factors affecting the solubility of solute in a

solvent.
Guide Card

Have you observe your mother in preparing our foods

everyday? Or have you ever wonder how cola drinks,
pizza, sago’t gulaman , salad and many more are made?
Do you know that all of them are called mixtures?

Coffee paint fruit salad palitaw milk tea

Soft drink Ice tea pizza cereal mixed nuts

tea juice salt water Muddy water halo- halo

Look at the box on the right side. All of them

are mixtures.
Can you separate which is homogeneous and
heterogeneous?

Were you able to separate the homogeneous

from heterogeneous mixtures?

Good job!!!
A Solution is a homogeneous mixture. Homogeneous mixture has
the same properties throughout the sample. It means that
substances mixed thoroughly, after stirring, appeared as one
substances. You can no longer distinguish one component from
the other.

Solutions have 2 parts:

Solute Solvent
The substance that The substance in which the
Dissolves (found solute dissolves ( found in
In less amount) the greatest amount)

There are factors that affect the solubility of solute in a solvent.

 Manner of stirring
 Nature of the solute and solvent
 Temperature of the solvent
 Amount of the solvent
 Size of the solute particles
 Miscibility of the substance

Oopps!!!Before you answer ,try to

prepare first the materials needed.

Identify whether the following solutes can be dissolve in the given solvents. Check / it if it does and x if
it is not.
Solutes Solvents

1. Salt
2. sugar
3. coffee
4. starch
5. baking soda

What Makes Me Belong ?

Identify the factors affecting the solubility of the solute in a solvent by putting the
activities in the right column. Write the letter only.

Factors Affecting The Solubility of the Solute in a Solvent

Amount of Manner of Stirring Temperature of Immiscibility/Miscibility Size of the Solute
Solute the Solvent Particles

a. Applying acetone to remove the nail polish.

b. Dissolving 3 n 1 coffee in a water using a spoon or stick.
c. Dissolving four tablespoons of milk powder in a glass of warm water.
d. A sachet of fruit juice powder dissolves in a half glass of water slower than in
a pitcher of water.
e. Mix baby oil with water. They do not mix completely with one another.
f. Salt dissolves in water but not in alcohol.
g. It is easier to dissolve powdered chocolate in hot water than cold water.
h. Detergent powder dissolves more easily in water than a detergent bar.
i. A sugar of ¼ kilogram can no longer be dissolved in a glass of water. It will
only settle at the bottom of the glass.
j. Shaking chocolate powder in water will dissolve faster than just letting it to
dissolve.
Assessment Card

b. Stir the water and sugar.
c. Grind the sugar to make it finer.
d. Heat the water and sugar.
9. How does the solubility of sugar vary with temperature?
a. As temperature decreases, solubility of sugar increases.
b. As temperature increases, solubility of sugar drops to zero.
c. As temperature increases, solubility of sugar increases.
d. As temperature increases, solubility of sugar doesn’t vary.
10. The solubility of solids depends on temperature. As temperature increases
a. the solubility of most solid solutes does not vary.
