CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION OF THE SOCIAL ISSUE

Marijuana is a plant whose scientific name is "Cannabis Sativa", the most commonly
abused illegal substance worldwide. It consist of more than 120 compounds, which are likely to
have different properties. It is a green, brown, or gray mix of dried, crumbled parts from the
marijuana plant which contains chemicals that act on your brain and can change your mood or
consciousness. Early uses of marijuana were largely medicinal, and it was used to treat things
like inflammation, malaria, gout, depression, nausea, as an anesthetic and even to suppress
sexual desires. Originally, the cannabis evolved in Central Asia before the plant was
introduced into Africa, Europe, and eventually in America.

Marijuana is seen either in a good way or a bad way. Some people see it as a medication
while others see it as a drug for recreational use. Marijuana contains mind altering chemical
which causes people to act weirdly. There are two types of cannabis: sativa and indica. Sativa
makes people more alert, increases their energy, makes them euphoric, adds to their creativity
and affects the head mostly. The effects of indica are deep relaxation, appetite stimulant, pain
relief, and sleep aid. Unlike sativa, indica affects the body.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's

psychological effects. According to NIDA, THC stimulates cells in the brain to release
dopamine, creating euphoria. It can also induce hallucinations, change thinking and cause
delusions. There are different effects to people who uses marijuana. Its side effects include
physical problems like breathing difficulties and deteriorating physical abilities. A frequent use
of marijuana can cause a higher risk for lung cancer, heart attacks and strokes. Using marijuana
doesn't do anything good in our lungs. Cigarettes take 7 minutes to be taken out of our body and
it has filters which marijuana doesn't have. It means that one joint count as 7 cigarettes, that’s a
total of 49 minutes. It kills our brain cells, and causes memory problems.

According to our research, there are top 6 reasons to why using of marijuana is illegal:

* It's Perceived as Addictive

* It Has No "Acceptable Medicinal Use"

* It Has Historically Been Linked With Narcotics, Such as Heroin

* It Was Once Associated With Oppressed Ethnic Groups

* Inertia Is a Powerful Force in Public Policy

* Advocates for Legalization Rarely Make a Convincing Case

There are different reasons why people want marijuana to be legalized. Some people uses
it for medication and some people think that because marijuana is illegal, people think it's cool to
use it. Some people say that smoking weed relieves stress, and some says that cannabis should be
legalized for medicinal and recreational uses too. It should be regulated and taxed like alcohol
and tobacco and stated that it is one of the least harmful drugs in this world.
