Syringe Set Up & Cleaning

“The Quality of a DGA result is absolutely dependent

on the quality of the sample collected”

This begins with good quality, clean sampling equipment

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Do not use any solvents to clean
any part of TRANSPORT X or its
accessories, EVER. (e.g. WD40,
Isopropyl Alcohol)

Use of solvents will not damage the equipment . However if

solvents are employed for cleaning or other purposes there is a
strong possibility that the results of subsequent analysis will be
heavily affected.
Syringe set up
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Do not use any solvents to clean
any part of Transport X or its
Accessories
Syringe set up
• Clean the plunger and the inside of the barrel of
the syringe with clean tissue or cloth.
• Connect the Glass Syringe to the 3 way Plastic
Stopcock and to the Quick Release Valve.
• Flush the Complete Syringe Assembly with air
into a waste container by repeatable depressing
the plunger in the barrel of the syringe
• The cleaning process should be repeated if the
syringe have been used to test a previous highly
contaminated/gassed sample elg LTC sample
Cleaning the lid injection pipe
The injection valve of the
bottle lid assembly
should be flushed with
air, using the syringe as
shown.
This will clear any oil
remaining from the
previous test .
Taking an Oil Sample with the
Syringe : 2 methods
1. Sampling directly from the Transformer into the
syringe
– This is the preferred method for use of TRANSPORT X
and should always be chosen where possible

2. Sampling from the transformer into a bottle and then

into the syringe –this method may adversly affect
accuracy of DGA measurement. It is allowed only
– If sample is presented in a bottle and no other option is
available
– If insufficient syringes are available and multiple
samples must be collected at once
– If user wants to for personal or practical reasons
– If no fittings available to connect syringe directly to the
transformer
Taking Oil Sample into a
syringe
• Allow 1 to 4 liters of Oil (depending on the size of
the Transformer) from the sampling point to flow to a
waste container. The more the better is a general
rule because
– A sizeable volume of Oil known as the “Dead
Volume” is trapped in the valves of the
transformer. This oil must be rejected as it is not
representative of the actual Oil in the Transformer
as a whole

• The oil sample should be collected directly into a

ground glass syringe using a length of Viton Tube to
allow oil to be sucked directly into the syringe

Transformer

container
Taking a sample from a bottle
• Connect pipe to Syringe
valve and immerse into
bottom of oil bottle.

• Before extracting oil from the

sample bottle, ensure viton
tube is fully submerged in oil
to the bottom of the bottle.

• At no time should the tube

be exposed to air till the
sampling is done as this may
draw air bubbles into the
syringe.
Taking a sample from a bottle -
Procedure
• Pulling back the plunger slowly, draw about 60ml of
oil into the Syringe
• Discharge the oil slowly into a waste container via the
side arm of the three way stopcock, removing any air
bubbles by inverting the syringe while depressing the
plunger.
• Repeat this process.
• Finally collect exactly 50ml into the syringe (no
bubbles)
• Turn the 3 way stopcock to secure the sample in the
syringe -lever position towards the plunger)
• Remove the tube and dab away any oil left in the
valve.
About your Oil Sample
• The sample bottle used to collect the oil sample
must be free of ALL Impurities and
Contaminants
– Reason : Any contaminants passed onto the Oil may
affect the eventual results

• If Oil sample is not to be tested immediately after

being taken, it is recommended to store the
sample in a Dark, Cool environment to prevent
further gas generation . E.g a cupboard or
cardboard box.
– Reason: Oil is degraded by light and heat, producing
more gas
Injecting the Oil Sample into the Test bottle
• Only inject oil when instructed to do so
onscreen - Injection of oil samples at other
times may damage the instrument.
• Connect the Syringe Assembly to the test
bottle with the male quick connect fitting firmly
into the female connector until a slight click is
heard
• 3) Turn the 3 way stopcock to open
channel from the syringe to the bottle, at
the same time closing the side arm.
• 4) Slowly depressed the plunger until all oil is
fully discharged.Wait for 3-4sec then
disconnect the syringe at the quick release
valve (do not turn stopcock as this
stage as pressure in the bottle will
force oil out the side arm of the
valve and the sample result will be
unrelaible)
Transport X
Operation
Transport X Operation : KEY POINTS

• 1) READ & FOLLOW THE ON SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY – they are

the best guide to unit operation

• 2) USE 50 ML SAMPLES OF OIL and 5 ML SAMPLES OF GAS ONLY

• 3) USE A CLEAN SYRINGE & BOTTLE ALWAYS

• 4) MAGNETIC STIRRER PIECE MUST BE PLACED IN THE BOTTLE FOR THE

TRANSPORT X TO ANALYSE A SAMPLE CORRECTLY

• 5) FOLLOWING OIL INJECTION SAMPLE BOTTLE MUST NOT BE MOVED

UNTIL THE ANALYSIS IS COMPLETE. IF THE BOTTLE IS MOVED THE
RESULTS COULD BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED

• 6) SAMPLE BOTTLE MUST BE KEPT UPRIGHT TO AVOID INGRESS OF OIL

INTO THE PIPE-WORK OF THE LID-ASSEMBLY

• 7) ENSURE THE PIPES ARE CONNECTED CORRECTLY AND SECURELY AS

PER INSTRUCTIONS
Transport X Operation ( Page 11 of Op Manual )
• 8) WHEN REMOVED, THE BOTTLE LID-ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE HELD
UPRIGHT, TO ALLOW OIL TO DRIP OFF, THEN CLEANED CAREFULLY AFTER
USE AND BEFORE STORAGE TO AVOID ANY INGRESS OF OIL INTO PIPE-
WORK

• 9) ALWAYS EMPTY THE SAMPLE BOTTLE AFTER A TEST IS COMPLETED.

CLEAN THE APPARATUS AFTER EVERY TEST

• 10) DO NOT USE SOLVENTS TO CLEAN ANY OF THE APPARATUS.

• 11) THE PURGE TIME CAN BE INCREASED ( MAX 10 MINS ) TO HELP

PREVENT CARRY OVER FROM A HEAVILY GASSED SAMPLE TO THE NEXT
SAMPLE.

• 12) ONCE TRANSPORT X IS UNPACKED IT IS RECOMMENDED TO RUN A

SYSTEM FLUSH OPERATION ( 20 MINS) TO HELP CLEAR THE GAS PATHS
FROM POTENTIAL CONTAMINATION
Other things about
successful operation of
TRANSPORT X
TURNING OFF TRANSPORT X

• Where POSSIBLE TRY TO TURN ON TEST SET

AT LEAST 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE ACTUAL
TEST
– This will give the unit time to warm up above ambient
temperature

• BEFORE TURNING OFF THE UNIT, OBSERVE

THE INSTRUCTIONS ON-SCREEN FORSHUT
DOWN AS YOU WOULD WITH A COMPUTER.
“CLEANING – THINGS TO NOTE”

• DO NOT USE SOLVENTS TO CLEAN THE SYRINGE, SAMPLE

BOTTLE OR ANY PART OF THE TEST SET !!!!!!

• IF THE SYRINGE OR SAMPLE BOTTLE GETS EXCESSIVELY

DIRTY-USE SOAP AND WATER FOR CLEANING & ENSURE TO
WIPE DRY AND ALLOW TO AIR DRY

• IF THE TEST SET IS DIRTY -USE A CLEAN WET CLOTH OR

CHAMOIS FOR CLEANING

• THE TEST RESULTS DEPEND VERY MUCH ON HAVING A

CLEAN TRANSPORT X & CLEAN ACCESSORIES
“LID ASSEMBLY AND SAMPLE
BOTTLE”
• DO NOT BEND THE INLET & OUTLET TUBING
EXCESSIVELY. THERE SHOULD BE NO KINKS IN THE
TUBING

• MAKE SURE THE IN- LINE TEFLON FILTERS ARE

SECURELY TIGHTENED – Do not over tighten - only finger tight

• ENSURE THE LID ASSEMBLY IS SECURELY TIGHTENED

(FINGER TIGHT) TO THE BOTTLE BEFORE INITIATING THE
TEST
“WHEN OIL IS HOT”

• “HOT OIL” SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO

COOL BEFORE TESTING.
– IF OIL TEMPERATURE IS HIGHER THAN THE INTERNAL CELL
TEMPERATURE THEN THE TEST WILL NOT START UNTIL BOTH
TEMPERATURES EQUALISED

• A COOLING GEL PACK OR A COOLER

BOX CAN BE USED TO QUICKLY COOL
THE OIL IN THE SYRINGE
REPLACEMENT OF IN-LINE TEFLON
FILTERS
• IT IS ABSOLUTLY IMPERATIVE THAT
THE TEFLON FILTERS ARE CHANGED
AT LEAST AFTER EVERY 20 SAMPLES

• IF ANY OIL RESIDUE IS PRESENT IN

THE PIPES OR THESE FILTERS
APPEAR DISCOLOURED THEY
SHOULD BE REPLACED IMMEDIATLY
