EXPRESSIONISM

An art movement that begin in Germany during the 20th century

Was riginally borrowed from painting which intended to express strong emotion (a
nxiety, anger and feeling of isolation)

Characterized by subjectivity, dissonance, and atonality

COMPOSERS
Arnold Schoenberg

One of the most influential figures in music and founder of musical modernism
of the 20th century.

Created a new method in composition using the twelve-tone system

A self-taught musician

Born in Vienna, Austria on September 13, 1874

Began to compose simple pieces for the violins at age eight even without a formal
training.

In 1901, he moved to Berlin where he worked as a musical director in Uberbret


tl, (artistic cabaret in Germany)

With the help of German composer, Richard Strauss, he became a composition tea
cher at the Stern Conservatory.
In 1902, he composed Pelleas und Melisande Op. 5 (only symphonic poem for larg
e orchestra.

In 1903, Schoenberg came back to Vienna and became acquainted with Gustav Ma
hler (Austrian composer who became one of his strongest supporters)

Earned money mainly from private teaching and some of his students who gain
ed a notable career in music were the Austrian composers (Alban Berg and Anton
Webern)

He migrated in America when the Nazis came in 1933

Became professor at UCLA and an influential teacher in the US

His health deteriorated and forced him to resign from his academic appoint
ment

In July 13, 1951 he died in Los Angeles, California USA

Igor Stravinsky

Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky is a Russian composer, pianist, conductor and was c


onsidered as one of the most popular and influential composers of the 20th centur
y due to his innovative stylistic variations.

Born in Oranienbaum, Russia on June 17, 1882 from a musical family.

His parents wanted him to become a lawyer and was enrolled in a law school.

After the death of is father, he pursued to study music and met Nikolai Rimsky
-Korsakov, a famous Russian composer who became his teacher.

In 1909, Sergei Diaghilev, the founder of the Ballets Russes in Paris invited him to
orchestrate Chopin’s work for his ballet and in turn led to the commission of his b
allet The Firebird in 1910.

His fame was reinforced with the production of his Petrushka in 1911, and The Rite
of Spring which nearly triggered a riot upon its premiere in 1913 and was later hail
ed for its revolutionary score.

During WW1 he brought his family to Switzerland where he composed music in


spired by Russian folklore and music with jazz influences

Renard and Les Noces are two of his best known works in Switzerland.

In 1939, he moved to New York City and completed hi Symphony in C

He died on April 6, 1971 with more than 100 works to his name.

Dominated by a chain of events that showed significant changes in the world hist
ory (two global wars) :World War I (1914 – 1918) and World War II (1939 – 1945).

In music, advancement in technology brought dramatic innovations in forms and st


yles of music.

Music brought new freedom and wide experimentation

Musical styles were derived from developments of painting

The most prominent trait that greatly influenced the flow of music was individualis
m (composers were able to invent, compose, and write music according to their o
wn style and free will.

French movement developed in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The movement was derived from Claude Monet’s painting entitled:

May be described as having refinement, vague in form, delicate in nature and


conveys atmosphere and subtle emotion

Like painting, impressionist music projects a hazy dream-like quality and usually use
nature as the subject.

Some conservative musicians and audiences during the time considered his work a
noise.

One of the most highly regarded French composer, founder, and the leading expo
nent of musical impressionism.

His composition is distinctive and appealing with combination of modernism, sens


uality, and technical innovation and is almost improvised that is, sounds free and s
pontaneous.

Born from a poor family in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France on August 22, 1862


At age 7, he started taking piano lessons

At 11, he entered the Paris Conservatory

At age 22, he won the Prix de Rome for his cantata L’Enfant Prodigue (The Prodig
al Son) in 1884

He died on March 25, 1918 of colon cancer at the age of 55 in Paris, France

MAURICE RAVEL

Joseph-Maurice Ravel

Born in Ciboure, France on March 7, 1875

Age 14, he entered Paris conservatory and enrolled as a pianist

Composed some of his known works during his period such as Pavane for a Dead
Princess, the Sonatine for Piano, and String Quartet
He was noted for musical craftsmanship and perfection of form and style in his wo
rks

He was involved in a car accident that severely threatened his health

During the last five years of is life, he was suffered from aphasia where he experie
nced difficulties in speaking, listening, reading, and writing

He had brain surgery but the operation was unsuccessful

December 28, Ravel died
