limestone chicken, giving visitors a cool photo opportunity. It is affordable and
beautiful place for a short vacation away from all the city hustle.

(Main Body)

“Krabi is a southern province on Thailand’s

Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country’s
oldest history of continued settlement. After dating
stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery
and skeletal remains found in the province’s many
cliffs and caves, it is thought that Krabi has been
home to Homo sapiens since the period 25,000 –
35,000 B.C. It was one of twelve towns that used,
before people were widely literate, the monkey for
their standard.”

Amidst the crystal clear waters of Arabian Sea lays a very peculiar island named
Koh Kai. In Thai, Koh Kai (sometimes spelled Koh Gai or Koh Khai) means
‘Chicken Island’. It takes its name from the chicken-shaped rock forming its
southern tip. Koh Kai is also called Koh Hua Khawan or Koh Poda Nok. Eight
kilometres from Ao Nang in the province of Krabi, It is a small island belonging to
the Poda group of islands. One comes to Krabi mainly for its sea, turquoise, its
beaches, numerous of white sand and also for its islands. Particularly beautiful and
calm, those beaches are ideal for lazing in the sun and enjoy a sea with the colors
of dream.
The best way to reach Chicken Island is via Ao Nang, Krabi. With this option one
can fly to the Krabi International Airport which is connected to locations in
Thailand as well as e.g. Kuala Lumpur or Qatar. One can take another means of
transport like boat or bus to Krabi town. The local airport limos will charge up to
700+baht (for 4 people) from Krabi airport to Ao Nang. Local shuttle buses also
called - songthaew- run from Airport to Krabi (approx. 50 baht) and from Krabi
to Ao Nang (approx. 60 baht). The cheapest option would be this shuttle bus,
which runs regularly from the airport through Krabi Town to Ao Nang, for a price
of approx. 100 Baht per person. Furthermore, you can take the ferry from Koh
Lanta or Koh Phi Phi directly to Ao Nang or directly to Chicken Island.

Chicken Island is – like Koh Poda – a part of the Had Noppharatthara – Mu Koh
Phi Phi National Park. Therefore one has to pay a national park fee when they
purchase the tickets. The tickets might cost around 200-300 baht per person. But
this price varies depending on the season one visits. If visiting Ao Nang during the
low season it will only cost you 50 to 100 baht, depending on the time of visit. The
longtail boats at the Ao Nang beach will wait for passengers until they are filled up
with at least 6 people. Most of the time it won’t take too long and after 10 or 15
minutes you will be on the way to paradise. Alternatively you can book one of the
popular day trips to 4 islands.

Another peculiarity of Koh Kai is that it is linked to Koh Tap and Koh Mor by a
sandbar, which is only visible at low tide, offering visitors the opportunity to walk
from one island to the other, surrounded by crystal clear waters. This land bridge
forms into one of Koh Kai’s two beaches, with the other situated next to the
chicken-shaped rock. The waters surrounding the island host superb coral reefs,
providing visitors with great snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. Here you
can find some beautiful fish in the water, too. Apart from the small shack for
snacks and refreshments there is no infrastructure on the island. The longtail boats
usually leave about 3.30 – 4.00 p.m. from Chicken Island to Ao Nang since there is
no longtail boat service after 4.00 p.m. Drones and feeding the fishes is not
allowed on island.

Koh Kai or Chicken Island is surely a calm place to enjoy the beautiful sceneries,
colorful reefs and varieties of fishs.
(Summary)

Koh Kai or Chicken Island, a colorful paradise, is approx. 8 kilometers from Ao

Nang. Chicken Island is intriguing not only for many of the typical island reasons,
but also for its slightly daring unpredictability. It’s an uninhabited and nearly
pristine white sand beach that remains undeveloped, save for one little snack
shack. One can travel to Ao nang from Krabi airport by taxi or bus or can go to Ao
Nang via boat from other neighboring islands. It’s a 25-30mins boat ride from Ao
Nang to Chicken Island. Chicken Island deserves its own day of meandering. The
beach is serene and peaceful. A visit at low tide will allow you to walk across a
land bridge that appears seemingly out of nowhere and leads you to Tup Island, a
smaller, sunnier island whose beach floods during high tide. The snorkeling here is
some of the best in the area, with a wide variety of underwater life floating right
past your mask.
