THE IMARPE

The Institute of the sea of peru (imarpe) is a specialized technical body of the ministry
of production, oriented to scientific research, as well as to the study and knowledge
of the peruvian sea and its resources, to advise the state in making decisions
regarding the rational use of fishery resources and conservation of the marine
environment, actively contributing to the development of the country.
IMARPE has five General Directorates that contemplate different lines of research:
 General Directorate of Pelagic Resources Research
 General Directorate of Demersal and Coastal Resources Research
 General Directorate of Oceanographic Research and Climate Change
 General Directorate of Aquaculture Research
 General Directorate of Hydroacoustic, Remote Sensing and Fishing Arts
Research.
The IMARPE research includes knowing the sea and its dynamics through the study
of physical, chemical and biological oceanographic processes with an ecosystem
approach.
Under this approach, the relationship between fishing resources, the environment
and fishing activity is investigated, providing advice on the management of resources
and the marine environment, respecting and promoting the concepts of sustainable
development, conservation of marine biodiversity, environmental protection
environment and responsible fishing.
The IMARPE has coastal laboratories strategically located on the coast where work
is carried out to monitor fisheries and the main resources of economic and social
importance, such as pelagic fisheries (anchovy, sardine, jack mackerel, mackerel,
tuna and others), demersal fisheries (hake and others) and marine invertebrates
(squid, scallop, chanque, clam, macha and others)
To develop timely research in the Peruvian sea and its biodiversity, IMARPE has
three large-scale scientific research vessels: the BIC
Humboldt, the BIC José Olaya Balandra and the BIC Luis
Alberto Flores Portugal.
OBJECTIVE AND FUNCTIONS

OBJECTIVES
Study the "El Niño" Phenomenon, in order to achieve a better understanding of it, to
be able to predict it and determine its probable consequences.
Coordinate, recommend and advise the activities related to the "El Niño"
phenomenon, at the national level.
Coordinate at international level the issues related to the Project "Regional Study of
El Niño".
The emission of technical reports of evaluation and forecasts of the atmospheric,
oceanographic, biological-fishing, ecological marine and hydrological conditions that
allow to improve the knowledge of the "El Niño" Phenomenon for an efficient and
effective risk management.
FUNCTIONS
Keep informed about the possible occurrence of the "El Niño" Phenomenon, so that
it is possible to adopt decisions to adapt and protect the existing infrastructure in the
different sectors, in prevention of the possible damage that this Phenomenon could
cause to the national economy and the Peruvian population.
Carry out the follow-up of the coordination and recommendations in order to optimize
the study of the El Niño Phenomenon carried out by the entities that make up the
Multisector Commission.
Guide the various sectors pragmatic precautionary measures that reduce damage
and / or take advantage of benefits.
Keep the population adequately informed about possible variations in their
development.
Recommend, advise and coordinate the various activities related to the study of the
"El Niño" phenomenon.
