“Music and movies for the soul”

Listening to music and watching movies might be one of the most relaxing and heart-filling activities of your
daily life. Over the years, we have tried to keep you updated on the latest releases and concerts, in order to
make easier for you to fulfill the human necessity of being surrounded by the best music and films of the
century.
In this number you will find articles on “How movies can increase your critical thinking” and “How important
is music for living?” We have chosen these topics because we thought that you might be interested in
knowing how and why these arts are able to modify the way you approach life in every possible way. It can
be positive and negative, but we will always try to give you the crème de la crème. You will also find our
usual sections and a little cheeky surprise “Throwback movie review”, a section that made an appearance
back in August but we brought it back again due the reader’s requests with a little twist. Hope you enjoy it!

The editor.

To the editor,

I am writing you to let you know how grateful I feel about your magazine. Your articles, reviews and
biographies have helped me realize how little I knew about cinema. You keep me updated about the latest
movie releases and you have never failed with any of your recommendations, they always turn out to be as
good as you said they were going to be.

As a suggestion I would like to see more movie soundtrack reviews. The one that you published back in
August of “The breakfast Club” made me remember how much I loved that movie when I was a teenager! It’s
good to have a throwback once in a while; therefore, it would be great if you could make it a usual thing in
your magazine, I even got my sister interested in it!

Finally, I would like to suggest a friendlier packaging, meaning that the magazine should come in a plastic bag,
due to the fact that when I try to buy your product in a supermarket the posters that you promise are always
missing, under that circumstances I would appreciate if you keep an eye on it.

Yours sincerely,
Juana Aristía Troncoso, Santiago, Chile.
To the editor,

I recently received your sample of Nicole´s new LP. I am writing this letter to express my opinion
concerning the LP and Nicole´s work.

Surely, many people did not notice that Nicole was working very hard this last year. Appearances on
television did not give any clue that she was totally focused on the brand new CD, but private and intimate
presentations in Chile and abroad gave chances to prove that all the attention and interest she put on it
were completely evident. In addition to that, I must say that I am impressed with her. After spending so
much time at home in family life she realized that music could not be left behind, and instead of giving her
entire life to the family she decided to include and use all these new activities, feeling and experiences
involved to her new life, to turn them into brand new songs.

The first single is quite different from her last album, and this speaks about originality and identity always
present into her profession. Impressions of life experiences since she was a child and a mature voice make
this single a proper concept of evolution. This recording gives the sensation of naturalness, and a home-
made passage. I must remind you that she has her own recording studio in Santiago, and this is truly
important because it is possible to feel great sensitivity while you are listening to the LP regarding musical
instruments.

The launching of Panal will be performed by Nicole on November 14 th, so I believe it will be a great
moment to feel the growth and improvement this great Chilean artist has obtained. I also hope you can
accompany her through this brand new work as you have done it since she began to sing, and besides
giving her your important support as a great magazine.

I express my gratitude for the sample you gave me, as well. See you at the launching.

Sincerely,

Eduardo Montalva Garrido, Santiago , Chile.

Throwback movie review
Bicentennial Man
By Cinzia Bizama

Bicentennial Man , by Chris Columbus, is a very touching film

based on the novel The positronic Man, co-written by Isaac Asimov
and Robert Silverberg. The title is due to the age of the main
character and because Asimov’s novel was published when the U.S
had its bicentennial.

This bewitching story is about a robot, Andrew that is

introduced into an American family to perform as a housekeeper
and up keeping duties but ends up doing a lot more than that. The
cast includes Robin Williams as Andrew, the NDR robot; Sam Neill as
Sir Richard Martin, the owner of the robot and Embeth Davidtz as
Little Miss, Andrew’s darling and Richard Martin’s daughter.

The story begins when Andrew is bought by the Martins as a

conventional robot but instead, he develops a human personality.
Considering this, he observes human behavior and suddenly finds
himself in need of having feelings, which is a really controversial
subject in the android world. Finally , he decides to start a quest to
fulfill his greatest ambition: To become a man, to love and be love
but , paradoxically , is this last feeling what will keep him attached
to the Martin family for over three generations.
6

I thoroughly recommend this film, is full of emotions and

social issues such as slavery, intellectual freedom, prejudice and
mortality which is beautifully complemented by the brilliant
performance of the actors and actresses and also the direction.
Moreover, the landscapes and wardrobe are very impressive. If you
like drama and science fiction, this is definitely a film for you!

Did you know…? Wham! was the first pop group to perform in China.

The Panal Which

Embraces Everything
It is Thursday 14th, 9 o’clock and the lights begin to shine. There are too many
people shouting Nicole’s name. In the backdrop, a deep blue screen shows Nicole
swimming into the water with many light beams.

It is possible to see the musicians

playing some random notes, and now a pale
blue light floods all over the place. The notes
are comfortable and relaxing, they give a
marine atmosphere, like if we were ready to
be born from a mother. People are still
shouting her name, and putting their hands
together. This comfort makes me feel like if I
was with my family, like home. It gives me the impression that this
performance will show how mature Nicole’s
work has become in an entire level.

It is 10 o’clock, and for the opening she made

us clear that the show would be loaded of light
effects and visual backing. These would give
the best company for Nicole’s versatile voice.
During two hours, Nicole presented a show full
of emotions, memories, and complicity with
the assistants. Supported by her brand new
band she divided her performance in two parts.
Furthermore, The first part of the show was
made for officially introducing her recently
released album, where she highlighted the

The first part of the song was made for officially

introducing her recently released album in
which she highlighted the songs “Baila”,
“Románticos”, and “Columna Vertebral” in
which she shared roles with the singer-
songwriter Fernando Milagros.

Although, there was no doubt that the most

emotional moment of this part was when she
dedicated the song “Partir” to her recently
diseased mother.

The second part of the show was dedicated to

the oldies, where she took a trip through her
greatest hits like “Tal vez me estoy
enamorando”, passing through “Despiértame”,
and finally made an encore with the hit “Hoy”.

It was an excellent night. Thanks to her

band, and a proper visual support, she made
clear her new mature, versatility, and musical
strength. There is no doubt that she fulfilled all
our expectations. Panal comes in company of
many hits because it is an album made entirely
of emotions, and that goes through people. We
are very thankful for her music.

Important
Is Music
For Living?
By Felipe Fernandez-López

If we start to think how much influence music has on people, it is possible to say that the
atmosphere it creates around them is the most important part. Let´s imagine how this influence makes an
impact on their lives.

Firstly, we have to consider that music is the main

element of culture structure and, in the same time, it has
influences in people´s habits and emotions. Throughout
history music has changed, and these changes represent
how people have lived. Since music began, it always has
been the spirit of society. According the period of life,
music is the main influence on people. For example, young people begin to build identity with

wardrobe, hairstyles, language, and music. They

create a new system of belief, apart from their
family. Consequently, young people are the
main consumers of disco graphic material and
the main audience of video broadcasting. They
feel they need to be original, finding a different
identity from their parents and other people for
protection -also called “friends”-. In this case a
repeated activity for them is listening to music. It
seems that music is the only way to show they
are different.
Did you know…? Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera created Tom and Jerry in 1939.

Today, music has become an open door to
people’s expressions. This means that everyday
people -whatever age- is using music to
communicate feelings, statements, even
complaints. Many cultural demonstrations around
the world have music as backdrop. This is a clear
example of the way that people express how they
are feeling, and how they combine different arts
with music. Considering statements, people use
music to create a special atmosphere which they
feel comfortable.

It is very common to find people listening to

music according the situation they are living, and
contrast music with it.
As we can see, music is one of the main
parts of our life. It is a demonstration of the way
we live, the way we feel, and how we develop in
the world.

How Movies
Can Increase
Critical your
Thinking?
By Cinzia Bizama
Movies are often seen as an entertainment resource. If you think about the times that you
have decided to watch a film. It was in order to get distracted, to forget about reality for a while, but
have you thought about the impact that movies have in your moral values, judgment and perspective?
Since you were a child you’ve had favorite movies
like Toy story, Monsters Inc., The Lion king, etc. When
you first watched them, the first thing that got stuck in
your head was the plot: firstly, you have a bunch of toys
that try save themselves, so they can come back to their
owner, in the second one you see a couple of monsters
that get attached to a “toxic” little girl and the last movies
about a little lion that tries to recover what used to his father. But as time goes by, these movies
belong grow on you and you start realizing that
every plot has a denotation. You notice
that messages are stronger than they
seem: they talk about growing older, love,
responsibility, forgiveness, faith, etc.
Therefore, you get to meditate about these
subjects because they leave you with lots
of feelings, thoughts and opinions.

14
Did you know…? The Beatles song “Martha My Dear” was written by Paul McCartney about his sheepdog
Martha.
A clear example of movies that can help you
develop critical thinking would be: The wall, An
inconvenient truth and Food inc. These films can
make you reflect about your surroundings, society
and culture. The wall does it in a metaphoric way
by criticizing the relationship between teachers and
students in order to make you notice how the
repression and harm of the World war II had
affected a whole society, especially kids since they
were growing up with a lot of fear. On the other
hand, An inconvenient truth is a more self-
explanatory film in which you don’t need to give it a thought to understand the main conflict,
It is a lot easier to understand that the
purpose of the film it’s to create global
warming awareness. The same happens with
Food inc., a film where you get to know how
wheat, eggs and meat are produced as well
as how the supply chains have manipulated
the system.
Finally, you will see how your critical
thinking starts improving when you carefully
analyze and interpret all the information
that you receive from movies. You can
compare different points of view in order to
develop a more complex and informed
opinion and, in the long term, this exercise
will help you not only to improve your
academic life, but also your everyday life.

Did you know…? In Terminator 2 – Judgement Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger received a salary of $15
15
million; the 700 words he spoke translates to $21,429 per word. “Hasta la vista, baby” thus cost
$85,716.
