MSUDC 2018

Jannah Reeham M. Macaumbos

What could be more fun than debating? Given this last, MSU-ILS was invited for 3 day camp
debate hosted by Rostrum. Another challenging debate which attracts the attention of every
students with a a strong mind. The debate is open for highschool and college, it aims to enhance
the ability of every students in defending and proving.

MSU-ILS sent 5 groups which compose of 12 students, namely the ILS adjudicators (Lailanie
Macapaar, Amerhussien Saligoin, Amerhassan Saligoin, Halima Mahdi) who will be
participating as adjudicators and will not engage in any debate proper, ILS A debaters (Nezam P.
Maranda and I), ILS B debaters (Fatma Aliah Y. Balt and Aquil Hadjinor), ILS C debaters
(Baenisah L. Macote and Nawaff O. Basheron), ILS D debaters (Sahib Diamla and Salem Hadji-
rasul).

The first part of the camp was a Seminar to enlighten the beginners on basic instructions and a
proper way of adjudication. Sir Nashroden Pagadillan, the president of Rostrum, quoted in his
lecture that "hindi lahat ng idea ng iba ay mali, nagkataon lang talaga na nagkaiba kayo ng
opinion..." an inspiring advise from a man who is very known in debating industry. In order to
be a good debater, we are required to acknowledge the opinion from opposing bench, and not to
neglect the fact that it needs an urgent attention.

On the 2nd and 3rd day of camp, debate proper starts at exactly 9:30 am and ends at 5:30 pm. a
lot of students from different institutions are present, including senior high, colleges and even
alumni from ILS. It's quite intimidating knowing that our coaches, Sir Ace and Sir Nelton, will
be participating as well. The event immediately starts after each group recited their resounding
battle cry.

All participants from MSU-ILS was able to show their talent in defending and dealing with
global issues, everyone gave all their might to proceed in quarter finals. Unfortunately, none of
us were able to reach the needed points to proceed on quarter finals, but still everyone did an
astounding job and deserves to be applauded.

Debate is a way of expressing your perspective and proving your idea well suited in the given
issue, debaters are arguing to extract the best idea that was approved by the chair adjudicator
along with his fellow adjudicators.

Indeed debating is not just reasoning out, proving and presenting ideas, instead the main essence
of debate is to enhance the ability of debaters in communication. It is definitely not a mere
mental game, besides it opens another dimension where everyone is free to express themselves.
