RULES FOR “DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD”


The “ Distinguished Alumnus Award – <Year> “ shall be the highest award to be given
by NIT Rourkela to its alumni in recognition of their outstanding achievements, starting
from the pre golden jubilee year, 2009. NIT Rourkela shall honour, in each convocation,
individual members of its alumni who have made a mark in their respective fields of
expertise or have made a significant contribution towards the growth of the institute.

Number of Awards : The number of awards shall be between 0 and 3 every year.

Eligibility

All alumni who have been awarded a degree by NIT Rourkela or by Sambalpur
University or Utkal University after studying at REC Rourkela will be eligible for the
award. Alumni who are currently associated with the institute as a member of the
faculty, staff or governing body or are employed in the Ministry of HRD will not be
eligible for the award. The award shall be given for significant achievement in national
or international level in one of the following areas:
1. Academic Excellence
2. Professional Excellence
3. Excellence in Entrepreneurship or management
4. Excellence in other walks of life
5. Contribution to academic or infrastructure growth of the institute
6. Financial contribution to the institute
There is no fixed criterion for measuring excellence. But the Award Committee, the
Senate and the BOG, each one of them separately, must be satisfied that the nominee
truly belongs to the class of exceptional individuals who have made a mark in their
chosen area of endeavour.

Nomination
Nomination for the award may be made by alumni, serving and retired faculty members
of the institute, members of the BOG, past Principals and Directors of REC/NIT
Rourkela and by other reputed individuals familiar with the Institute. Wide publicity shall
be given by the institute among eligible nominators so as to get good number of
nominations. Nominations received after the due date shall be considered for the next
year’s award. The CV of the distinguished alumnus nominee must contain, among other
things, the following information:

2. Degree obtained from REC/NIT Rourkela and the year of graduation
3. Qualification and Professional experience
4. Career record after graduation from the Institute
5. Contribution that merit this award [Detailed account]
6. Any other relevant information

Dean (AR) will organize the material received and place them before the Screening
Committee for preliminary evaluation.

Evaluation Process

Preliminary screening of proposals will be made by the Screening Committee consisting


of the following members :

1. Dean (AR) Chairman


2. Two faculty members nominated by Director Members
3. Two alumni nominated by Alumni Associations Members

The recommendations of the Screening Committee, along with all proposals received
will be placed before the Award Committee.

The award committee shall consist of the following members.

1. Director, NIT Rourkela Chairman


2. A member of BOG nominated by the Board Member
3. Dean (AR) Member Secretary
4. Dean (SW) Member

5, 6 Two senior Alumni nominated by Alumni Member


Associations
The Committee shall place its recommendation before the Chairman BOG for approval
approximately six months before the date of the next Convocation. On approval of the
Chairman, the nominees will be informed by the Dean(AR) and a formal invitation to the
convocation will be sent by the Director.

The Award

The award shall be in the form of a silver plaque with an image of the institute building
or logo, a citation and a certificate. The award shall be given at the annual convocation
of the institute. If, for some reason, the awardee is unable to be present in the
Convocation, he can receive it from the Director at any later date. The institute will
organize a special function for the purpose.

The awardees and accompanying family members will be treated as institute guests
whenever they come to NIT Rourkela to receive the award or for other purposes in
future.

Exception

The Award Committee will consider all proposals forwarded by the Screening
Committee. It may, at its discretion, add additional names from or outside the original
list. The director, assisted by Dean (AR) and other faculty members may accelerate the
process to present an award in the Convocation.
