Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

ABSTRACT

Organic refers to a substance lacking of artificial, consequently organic food like

fruits and vegetables are food that are grown or made without the use of artificial

chemicals or pesticides, food that are produce from organic farming. Food is the provider

of energy, vitamins and minerals for maintaining our body’s homeostasis, however, food

is also the reason of various illnesses, that’s why food intake should be cautiously

observed. Fruits and vegetables play an important role in a balanced diet. In the

Philippines, vegetables are considered a cheap nutritional source. . The researchers chose

Candaba to conduct the research for the fact that Candaba is one of the biggest towns in

Pampanga consequently has a large population resulting to higher demand of vegetables

which means higher production. This study aimed to inform how the vendors are aware

of organic vegetables, a.) to know how convenient and effective of selling organic

vegetables and b.) its downside and drawbacks. This study clarified if selling organic

vegetable is more convenient or inconvenient to the vendors and identified the awareness

of Candaba public market vendors toward organic vegetables. The researchers limited

this research only to vendors in Candaba public market and used the method of case

study to evaluate the awareness of Candaba public market vendors regarding organic

vegetables. It also used the purposive or judgemental sampling. The instrument used in

this study was the carefully crafted questionnaires that prefer more to the used of method

“coding”.

This study found out that the awareness of Candaba public vendors towards

organic vegetables is not that efficient because they focus more on the demands of their

consumers, also because the appearance of inorganic vegetables is more attentive to what

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 4

Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

they prefer most and especially it is said to be cheaper than organic one. That reason also

causes the consumers to lessen their knowledge about what is organic vegetables really

is.

The researchers discovered strength of Vendors in Candaba public market

knowledge toward organic vegetables. Generally the Candava public vendors perceive

that organic vegetables are those that are grown without the use of fertilizer which is

practically untrue, organic vegetables use fertilizers, organic or natural fertilizer like

animal compose and perish vegetables. Fast perishing vegetables are also said to be

organic since the absence of artificial preservatives is observed. Hypothetical, the

awareness of the consumer is a big factor to the awareness of vendors; after all of course

the vendors will only sell what the consumers demand and ask for but the costumers

disregard this label. the researchers found out that selling organic vegetables is somehow

beneficial to some vendors in Candaba public market as it only need minimal amount of

capital and can be farmed in your own backyard. it also has some downsides to the some

vendors; importing organic vegetables is double the price and takes a lot of time to grow

than the inorganic ones. In this study, the researchers found out how deep is the

awareness of the vendors of Candaba, Pampanga toward organic vegetables and the

positive and negative effect of selling it. For the recommendations, The vendors should

be informed of the characteristics of the product especially vegetables the import and sell,

as their customers’ health is on their hand. Along with the vendors, consumers must be

the most well-informed of the product’s quality they will buy. To the future researchers

is relevant in today’s society

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Health is an integral part of human existence, it is a crucial factor in an

individual’s overall. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a “state of

complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease.” An

ancient Greek physician, Herophilus once said, “When health is absent, wealth is

useless.” Thus, the protection of it is a challenge. What we eat is the most influential

factor that affects our health. Food is the provider of energy, vitamins and minerals for

maintaining our bodies homeostasis, however, food is also the reason of various illnesses,

that’s why food intake should be cautiously observed.

Therefore, Food is the center of health. According to some proponents; Roger

Williams: “health requires healthy foods”, Robert Urich: “Healthy outside starts from the

inside”, and “Tell me what you eat and I’ll tell you who you are.” said by Jean Anthelme

Brillat-Savarin, these statements prove that food plays a big part to human wholeness.

Proving that our health is reflected from what we eat.

Today the concept of healthy living is found, daily exercise along with proper

diet. According to Fit Kids (2014), healthy eating is consuming the right quantities of

food from all group in order to ensure an individual’s body is appropriately nourished and

capable of functioning appropriately, dependent on lifestyle and activity levels. Fruits and

vegetables play an important role in a balanced diet. It is the best alternative supplement

in developing a healthy well-being. In believe that fruit and vegetables are rich in

essential vitamins and minerals like fiber that is fundamental in losing and maintaining

weight. We may think that fruits and vegetables are already advantageous with the fact

that they are natural, noncompound, with the absence of chemicals on it, but variation of

organic and inorganic fruits and vegetable exist.

Organic refers to a substance lacking of artificial, consequently organic food like

fruits and vegetables are food that are grown or made without the use of artificial

chemicals or pesticides, food that are produce from organic farming. According to U.S.

Department of Agriculture, organic farming practices preserve the environment and avoid

most synthetic materials, including pesticides and antibiotic. Organic fruits and

vegetables bare benefits to both environment and human beings. According to an article

written on the web page named Help Guide, Organic fruits and vegetables are most often

fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives to make it last; it is better for the

environment as its farming reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase

soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby

birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms. But an article of Nutrition

Fact contradicts the thought stating that being organic doesn’t mean the products are

always healthy. You can now buy pesticide-free potato chips, junk food is still junk food

even if it was produced organically. Most of the time consumers disregard if the product

is organic because of unawareness of health hazard brought by chemicals pesticides and

fertilizers. Organic fruits and vegetables are uncommonly sold and bought by consumers

subconsciously considering their obliviousness on it.

In the Philippines, vegetables are considered a cheap nutritional source. But going

organic for them is high-end. Organic foods and farming are uncommonly bought simply

the fact that it is more expensive than conventional one. Concluding with the

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 9

Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

consideration of our current economic status, consumers probably will not purchase

organic product unless the pricing and supply stability conditions are met.

The consumers oftenly neglect checking if the product is organic as they assume

that its labeling is only use for more effective marketing strategies. Admittedly, there is

no clear and strong justification that organic vegetables are healthier or safer. But former

studies supports the perception of its conviniency. Some are confuse of its labeling and

claims that results to their perception that it is unnecessary. Vendors are not exempted

with this benightedness, they don’t bother to distinguish the products authenticity unless

stated by the producer. But vendors should be responsibly aware for the reason that they

are accountable with the consumers’ health. The researchers wants to focus to the

vendors in Candaba public market to investigate their awareness toward organic

vegetables. The researchers chose Candaba to conduct the research for the fact that

Candaba is one of the biggest towns in Pampanga consequently has a large population

resulting to higher demand of vegetables which means higher production.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To the vendors, the study aims to inform them regarding organic vegetables, to enlighten

them that organic vegetables can be an advantage and disadvantage. The study wants to

help the vendors to increase their understanding in link with organic vegetables. Selling

vegetables and other food products should be properly and cautiously examine

beforehand as the consumers’ health is at risk. This study clarified if selling organic

vegetable is more convenient or inconvenient to the vendors.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 10

Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

To the consumers, vegetables they buy have their variance, in terms of quality and other

characteristic. Therefore, they must be well-informed and meticulously check this claims

before buying.

Statement of the Problem

Consumers nowadays are very meticulous of buying mostly everything, more

particularly of foods but are they aware of the foods content and characteristic? Are the

vegetables they consider healthy are really healthy? Are they aware of the diversity of

organic and inorganic vegetables? If so will it contributes to consumers’ preferences?

This study identified the awareness of Candaba public market vendors toward

organic vegetables.

Specifically, it answers the following question:

1. How may the awareness of the vendors towards organic vegetables be

described in terms of:
1.1 characteristics of organic vegetables
1.2 consumers’ choice
2. What are the advantages of selling organic vegetables?
3. What are the disadvantages of selling organic vegetables?

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers limited this research only to vendors in Candaba public market.

This study investigated if organic vegetable sounds to the ears of Candaba vendors’ in

Candaba public market or are they acquainted with it. The propound study will consider

every facts and opinion that is linked to their awareness concerning of organic vegetable

of the Candaba public market vendors. The case study also identify the vendors of

organic vegetables in Candaba public market and the beneficial of it to their business. It

also includes the pros and cons of selling organic vegetable to the vendors in Candaba

public market. The study will reflect a detailed brochure to influence and enlighten more

vendors regarding organic vegetables.

METHODOLOGY

The researchers used the method of case study to evaluate the awareness of

Candaba public market vendors regarding organic vegetables. This qualitative research is

a pure research with the goal of giving a in-depth, detailed narrative report of the

Candaba public market vendors behavior and experiences in linked with organic

vegetables. The researchers used in-depth interview to get data as the research technique.

To accomplish the data collecting the researchers followed a procedure. Before

going to the proper interview, the researchers gathered thoughts and specific question to

be ask that may lead to the answers that our research seeks to find. Then, the researchers

will look for vegetable vendors in Candaba public market without the consideration if

what they sell is organic or not. After looking for five (5) vegetable vendors the

researching will ask for permission to get an interview, if permission is granted then the

interview should start. In the interview recording and taking account of the answers and

important details our participants supply will be done.

Research Design

This research is a qualitative research particularly a case study as the researchers

described the awareness of Candaba public market vendors toward organic vegetables.

Qualitative research described by Ashley Crossman (2018) as a type of social science

research that collects and works with non-numerical data and that seeks interpret meaning

from these data that help us understand social life through the study of targeted

populations or places.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 14

Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

Case study research refers to an in-depth, detailed study of an individual or a

small group of individuals. Such studies are typically qualitative in nature, resulting in a

narrative description of behavior or experience. Case study is used to answers questions

how or why. Case studies are commonly used in social science research and educational

settings. According to a writer, Merriam (1998), the case study does not claim any

specific data collection methods, but “focuses on holistic description and explanation.”

Our research is a case study as we narrowed down and analyze the awareness of the

vendors in Candaba public market regarding organic vegetables. The researchers explore

and describe the said phenomenon. The researchers also unraveled how does the

awareness of vendors about organic exist in the real world. This study can also be a

reference for future researches regarding organic vegetables.

Participants

The researchers appointed the participants by purpose. This study aims to

acknowledge the awareness concerning to organic vegetables, therefore, the best

participants to select from are the vendors, specifically vegetable vendors, for the reason

that the vendors are responsible for the information and authenticity of their product. The

researchers chose Candaba public market to conduct and select participant considering

the town’s large population that correspond to high demand on vegetables gave the

researcher a wide option of participants.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 15 5

Awareness of Candaba Public Market Vendors Towards Organic Vegetables

The researchers conducted purposive or judgmental sampling. The

researchers only pick out participant from the group of the vegetable vendors of Candaba

public market that suits the purpose of the study.

Instrument

The researchers used a carefully crafted questionnaire that only includes what is

necessary to narrow down the information to get from the participants. The same

questionnaire is used for the interview.

Data Collection

In accomplishing the data collection process, there are particular procedures that

the researchers followed. First, the researchers decided participants to be interviewed

about the research. Then, the researchers made a guide questions and provide a copy for

the key participant/s. Next, the researchers scheduled the interview. After that, the

researchers recorded the interview and took down the answers and important details.

Data Analysis

The researchers conclude the participants answer by aligning it with the purpose

of this study. The answers are filtered and useful information is extracted to end up with

the result to discover the research aim. The raw data, the researchers’ collected is

transformed to more specific and useful information for the researchers to use.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Organic vegetables are chemical free vegetables; from pesticide, chemical fertilizer

to preservatives. The researchers discovered strength of Vendors in Candaba public

market knowledge toward organic vegetables. Based on the data gathered, only half of

our participants are aware of what really are organic vegetables, half have their false

perception regarding it. Generally they perceive that organic vegetables are those that are

grown without the use of fertilizer which is practically untrue, organic vegetables use

fertilizers, organic or natural fertilizer like animal manure and perish vegetables. They

presume too that organic vegetables are mainly locally farmed vegetables or those who

can be planted and pick by the vendors themselves which is partially true if the use of any

chemical is deducted. In the term of the characteristic they have given some accurate

description of organic vegetables; like black marks along the skin that indicates the lack

of pesticides and holes as well that are cause by vegetable eating worms. Fast perishing

vegetables are also said to be organic since the absence of artificial preservatives is

observed. Hypothetical, the awareness of the consumer is a big factor to the awareness of

vendors; after all of course the vendors will only sell what the consumers demand and ask

for but the costumers disregard this label. Also, vendors in Candaba public market are

disbelieving that farming now a day cannot be done without the use of such chemical

taking account of the pest that might destroy the vegetables and the consumers want of

good-looking vegetables. Well. To consumers said by the participants has a big

advantage; good for the health, prevent illnesses cause by food intake. Also, the

researchers found out that selling organic vegetables is somehow beneficial to some

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE Page 23

vendors in Candaba public market as it only need minimal amount of capital and can be

farmed in your own backyard. However, though it very helpful and has a numerous

benefits, it also has some downsides to the some vendors; importing organic vegetables is

double the price and takes a lot of time to grow than the inorganic ones. On the other

hand, many of the vendors aren’t aware of what is organic vegetables because they only

sells vegetables without knowing if it is nutritious or has a chemical, the reason for that

thought is the buyers only base on the appearance if it is good in shape and looking fresh.

In this study, the researchers found out how deep is the awareness of the vendors of

Candaba, Pampanga toward organic vegetables and the positive and negative effect of

selling it.

Recommendation
Due to the outcomes identified from the entire process of the study, the following

recommendations are hereby proposed:

 Vendors

The vendors should be informed of the characteristics of the product especially

vegetables the import and sell, as their customers’ health is on their hand. Vendors should

remember to always be cautious in choosing the kind of vegetables they sell as smallest

fault pointed out by the consumer can affect their business a lot. Moreover, they mus gain

the trust of the consumers by selling consistently authentic vegetables. Vendors must be

veracious with their product and service in order to gain customer trust.

 Consumers

Along with the vendors, consumers must be the most well-informed of the

product’s quality they will buy. In buying vegetables they should be meticulous not just

in the means of appearance but its essential quality like its nutrition facts.

 Future Researchers

The researchers can recommend to the future researchers that they be accountable,

smart and considerate with this research topic because this topic is relevant in today’s

society. The researchers also entrust the future researchers to add additional information

such as ways to identify the if the vegetable is organic.
