Chapter 2 Installing
Overview
Introduction
If installed correctly, the ATRAX baggage scale performs with accuracy
and reliability. All indicators are configured & tested prior to shipment to
ensure that they are fully functional.
Before installation
Follow these guidelines to choose a suitable area to install the scale base.
• Mount the scale base on a solid foundation that is free from vibration
and has no measurable deflection when the scale base is loaded to full
capacity.
• Ensure there is an absolute minimum clearance of 10mm (0.5 inches)
between the weighing platform (live part) and any other object.
When a conveyer is mounted on top of the scale, the entire conveyer
forms part of the live weighing section and must also have a minimum
of 10mm clearance.
Example Action
Important
Failure to tighten the lock nuts will result in
weighing errors.
Continued…
Important
If you are using a conveyer with the scale base, fit it next.
The scale base and conveyer should be handled as two
separate units to avoid damage to the loadcells when
handling the conveyer.
Before installation
The operator display panel includes the main electronics for the scale and
is the unit where calibration adjustments are made.
Follow these guidelines before installing the operator display panel.
• Do not install until the cabinetmakers have finished the counters, to
avoid any damage.
• Choose a place to mount the operator display panel where it is
accessible to the check-in operator, but not where it might be
damaged. Preferred position is vertical, not horizontal.
• Allow access for cable routes in the counter you are mounting the
operator display panel in.
To install the operator display panel
Action
1. Choose a place to mount the operator display panel on the operator side of the check-
in counter.
2. To secure the operator display panel in place, use the retaining clamps which fit
onto the rear of the panel from the reverse side of the counter,
– and/or –
the 4 screws located in the corners of the panel,
– and/or –
the means supplied with the extended operator panel.
Do not over-tighten the retaining clamps.
3. Plug the serial cables from the passenger display panel, Scale base and the low
voltage power cable into the rear of the panel. Refer to the Operator Display Panel
specifications for connection details.
4. Plug the separate power supply from the rear of the panel into a 110 - 240 VAC, 50-
60 Hz AC “Mains” power source.
The mains power source must be a clean source, grounded, 3 wire, AC wall
socket.
Before installation
Follow these guidelines before installing the passenger display panel.
• Do not install until the cabinetmakers have finished with the counters,
to avoid any damage.
• Choose a place to mount the passenger display panel where it is
clearly visible to passengers, but not where passengers may rest their
briefcases or hand luggage.
• Ensure the check-in counter is rebated so the passenger display panel
has a flush fit.
To install the passenger display panel
Example Action
LED style
Before installation
Follow this guideline before installing the power supply.
• Mount the power supply in the check-in counter where it is within
1.5 m of the operator panel and within 1.5m of the main power supply.
To install the power supply
¾ Mount the power supply on a shelf behind the operator display panel,
or secure it using the mounting brackets that are located on the power
supply itself if requested as part of purchase.
I/O Connections
The digital I/O comprises of three fully-isolated input channels & three fully-isolated
output channels. Inputs and outputs are interfaced to the operator panel via connector J9.
Isolation is only intended to provide basic galvanic separation in order to eliminate ground
loops and prevent noise injection, and does not meet any particular isolation or safety
standards. The inputs are DC only while the outputs can be configured for either AC/DC
operation, or DC only operation at double the current.
Input Channels.
Jumper 1-2 and 3-4 to excite Input from ABS950, Remove BOTH jumpers if input
excited externally. External excitation voltage range, 5 – 24vdc max. Note, with
external excitation some optical isolation is lost, internal excitation of inputs with
clean contact operation recommended.
Channel 3 Spare
Output Channels.
Jumper 1-2 and 3-4 for switching DC loads up to 1.5A, Jumper 2-3 ONLY for
switching AC or DC loads up to 750mA. Outputs are rated to switch up to 50V (DC
or peck AC), but it is recommended that the switched voltages be limited to
nominally 24V (DC or ACrms) for maximum reliability.
Channel 3 Spare
Serial Configuration
The PC Port is a ASCII – compatible output which can be disabled or enabled with the
print key being assigned to the “*” key.
Data Format: All serial characters are in ACSII – compatible format and consist of the
following:
1 Start Bit
8 Data Bits
1 Stop Bit
2 No Parity
To comply with “Legal – For – Trade” regulations, output data is inhibited during the
following conditions.
• Scale in Motion
• Positive Overload
• Negative Overload
• Negative Weight Displayed
• Other “Non Normal” Display mode.

Chapter 3 Commissioning
Overview
Introduction
Once you have fitted and connected all the units, the ATRAX baggage
scale is ready to be commissioned.
Before commissioning
Apply power to the scale and check that all components are working. If
installation has taken place over a long period of time, check all
components and cables again to ensure no damage has occurred.
In this chapter
This chapter contains the following topics.
Configuration of Scale
Introduction
Once you have installed the ATRAX baggage scale, check the
configuration. The configuration sets the scale operating parameters.
Note that the scale must be configured prior to calibration.
Configuration is normally set by the scale supplier prior to shipping, but
should be checked at time of installation. The configuration you select is
stored in the scale’s memory and is retained when there is no power to
the scale.
Changing parameters
There are three levels of access available for changing the configuration
parameters. The operator can change parameters for the Operator LCD
Contrast, Backlight and Beeper volume at any time.
To change any other parameters that doesn’t effect the mythological
features of the scale (eg. Heavy Bag, Overweight Relay), dip switch 1
(located under the small cover on the back of the operator display panel)
must be turned on.
To change all parameters including those that effects the mythological
features (e.g. Calibration, Division Size), both dip switches 1 & 2
(located under the same cover as described above) must be turned on.
After changing the parameters, “dip switch 1 & 2” must be turned off to
prevent unauthorised changes to the configuration that could affect the
scale operating performance.

Checks Description
Required equipment Ensure you have one of the following available for this
procedure:
Minimum of 5 x 20kg test weights (metric calibration)
Minimum of 5 x 50lb test weights (imperial calibration).
Preparing equipment Ensure you leave the baggage scale running (mains power
applied) for 10 minutes prior to calibration, to allow the
electronics and loadcells to reach operating temperature and
stabilise.
Obstructions to scale Ensure the scale is free from any obstructions that may interfere
with weighing.
Height of scale feet Ensure the scale platform is level and that all four of the scale’s
feet are in contact with the conveyer (each foot is height
adjustable).
Locking nuts Ensure the locking nut on each scale foot is tight against the flat
part of the loadcell.
Obstructions to scale Ensure the scale conveyer, located on top of the scale base, is
conveyer clear and not in contact with anything around the conveyer. (The
entire conveyer is part of the weighing system.)
Interconnecting Ensure any interconnecting cables between the weighing scale
cables and static equipment have free movement and are not in contact
with any surrounding objects.
Corner adjustments Ensure the scale weighs consistently on all points of the platform.
(This is a factory set If adjustment is necessary, check the loadcell lock nuts are tight
and will not require and nothing is obstructing the scale, then contact your supplier.

Used to subtract the current bag on the scale from the accumulator and
decrease the bag count.
Pressing this key will set the accumulator and bag count to zero.
Note: The accumulator is also reset to zero when the scale is turned off.
These buttons are generally used during the configuration and calibration of
the scale. The functions of these buttons are labelled on the LCD screen
adjacent to the button. Assignments of the buttons are Belt Start, Group
to check-in and lbs/kg conversion.
Operation
Before operation
Before operating the ATRAX baggage scale ensure it is free of weight
and possible obstructions.
Initiation screen
When the scale is powered on, the operator panel with preform internal
operation checks while displaying the initiation screen. This screen
provides information on the following:
On completion of the initiation, the operator panel will enter the normal
operating mode, and attempt to zero in preparation for weighing.
(if zeroing fails an error message will be displayed).

bag weight.
Display Messages.
Introduction
The ATRAX baggage scale is capable to display meaningful messages to
the Operator. These are sub divided into three groups, Error Messages,
Info and Success Messages, Snag Messages, Wait Messages, and
Periodic Messages.
Error Messages
These display on the lower line of the display for approximately 2
seconds, normally as a result of an operation not being carried out when a
key was pressed. They are accompanied by an audible beep.
Snag Messages
These take over the entire display and must be cleared by pressing a key.
They are reserved for more serious conditions such as inability to read
the calibration data from EEROM on power-up.
Wait Messages
These display while the scale is busy, e.g. saving data to EEROM. Once
the operation has completed the display is restored.
Periodic Messages
These display only while the scale is not displaying any other type of
message. Where the conditions exist that would require more than one
periodic message to display, the messages are rotated on the display. If
any other (non-periodic) message condition occurs, that message
overrides the periodic message display.
Chapter 5 Maintaining
Overview
Introduction
The ATRAX baggage scale is a modern, full solid state weighing
machine with no moving parts. To ensure accurate and trouble free
operation, a few simple maintenance procedures are required on a regular
basis.
In this chapter
This chapter contains the following topics.
Regular Maintenance
3-monthly maintenance
This table describes the 3-monthly maintenance tasks for the ATRAX
baggage scale.
Task Description
Clean the scale Remove any obstructions and rubbish beneath and around the scale
base to ensure the scale continues operating correctly.
Check for damage Ensure there is no visual damage to the scale’s components.
6-monthly maintenance
This table describes the 6-monthly maintenance tasks for the ATRAX
baggage scale.
Task Description
Clean the scale Remove any obstructions and rubbish beneath and around the scale
base to ensure the scale continues operating correctly.
Check the scale Test the scale calibration (refer to “Calibration of Scale” in Chapter
calibration 3).
This is normally required by local Weights and Measures
regulations on at least an annual basis.
Check the displays Ensure all displays and display segments, on both the operator and
passenger display panels, are working.
• Switch the scale “off” and “on” again.
• Observe the displays during the self-test sequence and note any
faults.
• Check both displays have the same weight information.
Check the keys Ensure the operating keys are working correctly (refer to “Key
Functionality” in Chapter 4).
Check for damage Ensure there is no visual damage to the scale’s components.
Troubleshooting
Technical personnel
This troubleshooting guide is for technical personnel who already have
some knowledge of weighing equipment. This guide should be used to
assist technical personnel in logical fault finding.
To assist in troubleshooting, the 5 components and 3 cables of the
ATRAX baggage scale can be interchanged (one at a time) with an
adjacent weighing machine.
If the operator display panel and scale base is changed, the scale must
be re-calibrated. During the warranty period, repairs and maintenance
work is to be carried out by an authorised service agent only. Work on
the weighing system by others may render the warranty null and void.
Error messages
The ATRAX baggage scale automatically checks for faults and, if
possible, displays any fault as an error message.
This table describes the ATRAX baggage scale error messages and
suggests possible corrective actions.
