Scale Base Installation

Before installation
Follow these guidelines to choose a suitable area to install the scale base.
• Mount the scale base on a solid foundation that is free from vibration
and has no measurable deflection when the scale base is loaded to full
capacity.
• Ensure there is an absolute minimum clearance of 10mm (0.5 inches)
between the weighing platform (live part) and any other object.
When a conveyer is mounted on top of the scale, the entire conveyer
forms part of the live weighing section and must also have a minimum
of 10mm clearance.

To install the scale base

Example Action

1. Connect the load cell cable (LCC-950) to the scale

base.
Scale base
2. Place the scale base in position.

3. Restrain the scale base horizontally by means of a

cup or a ring that the adjustable feet can fit into.

4. Adjust the scale base to the correct height and level

using the adjustable feet located at each corner.

5. When the scale is level, tighten down the lock nut

on each adjustable foot against the loadcell.

Important
Failure to tighten the lock nuts will result in
weighing errors.

Scale Base Installation, Continued

To install the scale base, Continued

Important
If you are using a conveyer with the scale base, fit it next.
The scale base and conveyer should be handled as two
separate units to avoid damage to the loadcells when
handling the conveyer.

Check for clearance between the conveyer and check-in

desk and any toe-kick or framework used. The total
conveyer forms part of the ‘live’ section of the scale.

Any cables connecting to the conveyer ‘live’ section of the

scale need to be flexible and allowed to move with the
scale as load is applied.

Ensure that all metal parts are electrically bonded to

ground.

clearly visible to passengers, but not where passengers may rest their
briefcases or hand luggage.
• Ensure the check-in counter is rebated so the passenger display panel
has a flush fit.
To install the passenger display panel

Example Action

1. Choose a place to mount the passenger display

panel.

LED style

2. Use the two clamping brackets to secure the

passenger display panel in place.
The clamping brackets fit onto the panel from
the reverse side of the counter.

¾ Mount the power supply on a shelf behind the operator display panel,
or secure it using the mounting brackets that are located on the power
supply itself if requested as part of purchase.

0.1 NOVEMBER 2001

17

I/O Connections
The digital I/O comprises of three fully-isolated input channels & three fully-isolated
output channels. Inputs and outputs are interfaced to the operator panel via connector J9.
Isolation is only intended to provide basic galvanic separation in order to eliminate ground
loops and prevent noise injection, and does not meet any particular isolation or safety
standards. The inputs are DC only while the outputs can be configured for either AC/DC
operation, or DC only operation at double the current.

Input Channels.
Jumper 1-2 and 3-4 to excite Input from ABS950, Remove BOTH jumpers if input
excited externally. External excitation voltage range, 5 – 24vdc max. Note, with
external excitation some optical isolation is lost, internal excitation of inputs with
clean contact operation recommended.

Channel 1 Add Override

Channel 2 Remote On/Off

Channel 3 Spare

Output Channels.
Jumper 1-2 and 3-4 for switching DC loads up to 1.5A, Jumper 2-3 ONLY for
switching AC or DC loads up to 750mA. Outputs are rated to switch up to 50V (DC
or peck AC), but it is recommended that the switched voltages be limited to
nominally 24V (DC or ACrms) for maximum reliability.

Configuration of Scale

Introduction
Once you have installed the ATRAX baggage scale, check the
configuration. The configuration sets the scale operating parameters.
Note that the scale must be configured prior to calibration.
Configuration is normally set by the scale supplier prior to shipping, but
should be checked at time of installation. The configuration you select is
stored in the scale’s memory and is retained when there is no power to
the scale.

Changing parameters
There are three levels of access available for changing the configuration
parameters. The operator can change parameters for the Operator LCD
Contrast, Backlight and Beeper volume at any time.
To change any other parameters that doesn’t effect the mythological
features of the scale (eg. Heavy Bag, Overweight Relay), dip switch 1
(located under the small cover on the back of the operator display panel)
must be turned on.
To change all parameters including those that effects the mythological
features (e.g. Calibration, Division Size), both dip switches 1 & 2
(located under the same cover as described above) must be turned on.
After changing the parameters, “dip switch 1 & 2” must be turned off to
prevent unauthorised changes to the configuration that could affect the
scale operating performance.

Used to set the scale reading to zero and should only be used when there is
nothing on or beside the scale.
Pressing and holding this key for 1 second will zero the scale.
Note: This key will work only if the scale reading is less than +/-1.9% of
maximum capacity.
The function of this button is assigned in the configuration, can be
configured as either a print key or belt start.

Used to turn the scale on/off.

Note, Only blanks the Operator and Passenger Panel. Doesn’t isolate the

Display Messages.

Introduction
The ATRAX baggage scale is capable to display meaningful messages to
the Operator. These are sub divided into three groups, Error Messages,
Info and Success Messages, Snag Messages, Wait Messages, and
Periodic Messages.

Error Messages
These display on the lower line of the display for approximately 2
seconds, normally as a result of an operation not being carried out when a
key was pressed. They are accompanied by an audible beep.

Info and Success Messages

These display on the lower line of the display for approximately 2
seconds, normally as a confirmation of an operation.

Snag Messages
These take over the entire display and must be cleared by pressing a key.
They are reserved for more serious conditions such as inability to read
the calibration data from EEROM on power-up.

Wait Messages
These display while the scale is busy, e.g. saving data to EEROM. Once
the operation has completed the display is restored.

Periodic Messages
These display only while the scale is not displaying any other type of
message. Where the conditions exist that would require more than one
periodic message to display, the messages are rotated on the display. If
any other (non-periodic) message condition occurs, that message
overrides the periodic message display.

Alert Message Explanation

Error The function requested cannot be

carried out unless the internal CAL
switch is set. These operations
include calibration of offset and
span, and starting the diagnostic
modes of the scale.
Error The weight on the scale that was to be
subtracted from the accumulator is
greater than the accumulator value.

Troubleshooting

Technical personnel
This troubleshooting guide is for technical personnel who already have
some knowledge of weighing equipment. This guide should be used to
assist technical personnel in logical fault finding.
To assist in troubleshooting, the 5 components and 3 cables of the
ATRAX baggage scale can be interchanged (one at a time) with an
adjacent weighing machine.
If the operator display panel and scale base is changed, the scale must
be re-calibrated. During the warranty period, repairs and maintenance
work is to be carried out by an authorised service agent only. Work on
the weighing system by others may render the warranty null and void.
Error messages
The ATRAX baggage scale automatically checks for faults and, if
possible, displays any fault as an error message.
This table describes the ATRAX baggage scale error messages and
suggests possible corrective actions.

Error message Description Possible Actions

Loss of communications • Check the operator/passenger
to the passenger display serial cable connections.
