Pühalepa Hat
by Raina Kruus
Pühalepa Hat incorporates a pop of bright color to elevate a traditional stranded-colorwork
hat to new levels of chic style. An unexpected color for the cast-on edge and a pompom
create a bold eye-catching look. The design features our traditional old mitten pattern of
Pühalepa flies from the Island of Hiiumaa. It is a small, fairytale like quiet Estonian island,
where time stands still. It is a place for those desiring to be somewhere between a sauna,
jogging along the beach with highland cattle, or standing thoughtfully in a totally calm field.
This hat celebrates the shared heritage between the knitting tradition of today and our
history. The pattern belongs to my My Roots Series; a pattern series with the theme of our
Estonian knitting folklore.

I have been meaning to knit this hat for ages and finally found that stranded colorwork is lots
of fun and rewarding and I really love the decrease at the top - how the flies join their legs.
Watching them grow makes me ridiculously happy.
I do love the way this hat turned out. Every stitch was enjoyable and meant much to me. A
vision of mine is to learn something new with every design, and I can see myself going down
this road again in the near future.
Before beginning please read through the entire pattern and certainly check the pattern very
often. This hat is an average adult size version (if you want a smaller or bigger size – use
larger or smaller needles, different weight yarn, do less or more ribbing rounds). Flies to
honey hat is worked in the round from the brim to the crown.
I used 40cm/16" circular needles until I needed to work the crown shaping and then I
switched over to DPNs.

Note: Slip the marker from now on as you come to it. Note: Whenever the yarn needs to be carried for
more than 4 or 5 sts, cross the yarn strands on
back of work to avoid long floats and try to control
the tension.

Crown shaping:
On Round 46 begin crown shaping and work k2tog
as shown on the chart.
After Rnd 68 you have 16 sts on the needle.

Finishing:
Break yarn and thread through the remaining
stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull tight to close
the hole. Fasten off inside the hat and weave in
the end.
Wash in warm soapy water. Carefully remove
excess water by squeezing (not wringing) and
press between towels. Block. I prefer to use a
balloon because you can inflate it to your required
head circumference, but you may use a small ball
or bowl as well. Smooth out the crown shaping.
Add a pompom if you wish. Sew onto top of hat.
