Stages of a grammar/ vocabulary class:
Reallife situation: contextualize the class, that is, present a real-life situation to the
learners. Prepare some questions related to the context of your class for them to discuss
in pairs, trios, or small groups. After the discussion, ask them to share what they have
discussed with the whole class;
Presentation: have a model sentence on the board;
Meaning: ask yes/no questions based on the model sentence to check if learners
understood the grammar point/ vocabulary;
2 Form: as questions to check if learners understood the structure of the grammar
point/ vocabulary you are teaching;
Pronunciation: have the learners repeating the model sentence, and highlight any
specific pronunciation features (.¢. connected speech, stressed syllable, etc);
Closed exercise (or controlled practice), such as fill in the blanks, match the
columns, ete;
Show the worksheet in your hands, and give instructions before handing the
worksheet(s) to the learners;
Have learners compare their answers before correcting;
Correct with the whole class, by boarding the right answers;
Open exercise (or freer practice), such as giving prompts for the students to discuss,
interview a classmate, etc. They work in pairs, trios, or small groups;
Correct learners on the spot when they make mistakes concerning the language
you have just taught;
When mistakes are not related to the language they have just learned, correction
can be carried out at the end of the open exercise, by boarding the mistake and
asking the whole class for correction;
Ask them to share something they have discussed in their pairs, trios, or small
groups.
