BASIC SCHOOLS
Re-Opening of Basic Schools

Management announces for the information of pupils, parents/


guardians and the general public that all Basic Schools will re-open for
the 2019/2020 Academic Year on
Tuesday 10th September, 2019
My First Day of School
▪ It will be celebrated in all schools to welcome children entering the
school system for the first time
▪ GES officials from the GES Headquarters, Regional, Metro, Municipal,
and District Education offices will visit various schools across the
country and interact with the new entrants and their parents.
• Items such as stationery and confectionaries will be distributed to
the new entrants.
Right Age Enrolment
▪ Mass media campaign – This will include the roll out of the right age
enrolment campaign using TV, Radio commercials, jingles, billboards, fliers,
banners and posters.
▪ District Level activation - Thirty (30) districts have been selected for this
exercise.
▪ These are districts which have high incidence of over/under age pupil’s in schools,
low enrolment and high school drop outs.
▪ Eight (8) out of the 30 districts will have high dignitaries’ participating in this
exercise.
▪ Among these are the Honorable Minister of Education, Deputy Minister of
Education (General Education), Director General of Education, Deputy Directors
General, Hon. Joseph Osei-Owusu (First Deputy Speaker of parliament) and
Honorable Haruna Iddrisu (Minority Leader of parliament).
Health Screening
▪ Government of Ghana and UNICEF is supporting us to have a health
screening of all children entering KG 1.

▪ The health screening should help in early detection of any child with
issues for proper referral for diagnosis and treatment.

▪ We encourage all parents, guardians and community leaders to


ensure that all children at four (4) years are enrolled in KG1 on that
day.
School Uniforms
▪ As we announced at the 10th April 2019, Press Conference,
Management of GES intends to gradually face out the existing
school uniform of our public Junior High Schools (JHS) beginning
2019/2020 academic year.
▪ It must be noted by pupils/students, parents/guardians and the
general public that the current school uniform for the Junior High
Schools are still usable in all schools.
▪ The new uniform is being introduced on phased out basis and that
no pupil/student should be denied access to school on grounds that
that child is not using the new uniform.
Levies
▪ Suspension of levies in schools remain in force and all Heads of
Schools are to note that pupils/students should not be levied to fund
terminal examinations.
▪ We will work with District Directors, Heads of Schools and teachers
to ensure that terminal examinations are conducted smoothly in all
schools.
▪ Every child, irrespective of the person’s financial circumstances
should be able to participate in terminal assessment in all schools.
Levies - PTA

▪ The GES acknowledges and appreciates the continued role


played by parents through Parent/Teacher Associations
(PTAs) in the development and growth of schools.
▪ The GES has put together a committee of experts including
parents to re-examine the “Role and Responsibilities of
parents in the provision of Education at the Pre-tertiary
level”
▪ This will guide our decisions on Parents Associations going
forward.
Senior High Schools
Re-Opening of Senior High Schools
▪ The 2019/2020 Academic year has begun with the return to school of
students in Form 3.
▪ It is important to note that this year marks the full cohort of the
entire school made up of Free Senior High School Students.
▪ GES is conscious of the implications of this development in the
administration and management of the schools under this
circumstance.
▪ We require additional commitment and dedication from all
stakeholders, managers, administrators, teaching, non-teaching staff,
students as well as parents/guardians.
Re-Opening Dates – Form One (1) Students
▪ We are happy to announce the re-opening dates for First Year students
as follows:
▪ First Years (Form 1) in Single-Track Schools and students on the Green-
Track in Double-Track Schools are expected to re-open school on
15TH September, 2019

▪ First Years (Form 1) on the Gold-Track will re-open on


12th November, 2019
Re-Opening Dates – Form Two (2) Students

▪ Form 2 students in Singe-Track schools and those on the Green-Track


in Double-Track schools will reopen on
15th September, 2019

▪ Form 2 students on the Gold-Track in Double-Track schools will


reopen school on
15th October, 2019
Feeding
▪ GES has also taken note of the issues which have come up
with regard to feeding and is in the process of reviewing the
Menu for the schools

▪ Food Committee made up of all the significant stakeholders


in the system are studying proposals Management has
submitted to make recommendations by the End of
September 2019
Supply Of Food By Buffer Stock Company Ltd.

▪ Principles underlying the concept of supply of food items by the


Ghana Buffer Stock Company Ltd. remains the same.

▪ GES is pleased to inform you that the Hon. Minister of Education has
authorized an increase in the percentage of money released to
schools to cover perishable items from 20% to 30%.

▪ This should relieve the schools of the pressure of spending on some


of the needs of the schools.
Text Books
▪ Adequate number of textbooks have been made available to all the
schools for use by all students.
▪ Schools with issues of inadequate supply of textbooks of the four
core subjects should draw the attention of their respective Regional
Directors through their District Directors for attention.
▪ Parents/guardians are expected to replace all defaced/misplaced
textbooks per a directive issued by Management
▪ However, students who have either defaced/misplaced textbooks
should not be denied the textbooks for the next class.
Standardized Prospectus

A standardized prospectus for first year students have been


agreed on by Management, Regional Directors and Heads of
Schools and it is expected that those standards will guide this
year’s admissions
Uniforms
▪ Schools will continue to supply uniforms to first year students.
Each student will be entitled to two school uniforms, which
shall be managed as was done last year without any change.
▪ Government through the Ministry of Education has entered
into arrangement with Akosombo Textiles Ltd. (ATL) to
supply the materials for the school cloth to dressmakers of the
schools.
▪ Schools will continue to manage the process
School Placement 2019
School Placement for SHS
▪ The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released this years’
(2019) BECE results on Thursday the 29th of August 2019.
▪ WAEC submitted the results to GES on Saturday the 31st of August 2019
to enable GES commence the school placement process.

Statistics of data submitted as follows


• Total Candidature for the BECE was 517,331
• Complete aggregate file of 514,215
• Outstanding data to be submitted to GES by WAEC is 3,116
• We expect approximately 490,000 qualified students will be placed
Placement Vouchers
• The school placement process is on course and the portal will be opened to the students,
parents and the general public on the evening of Sunday the 8th September, 2019.

Steps to access the results


1. Purchase your voucher from vendors or with mobile money online

2. Visit cssps.gov.gh OR cssps.org


3. Click on “check placement ”
4. Enter your index number and your Voucher Code
5. Access and print your placement form

Note: if a student is not automatically placed, they should access the self-placement
platform.
