Organization Behaviour – II

SYMLOG – GROUP STRUCTURE

SYMLOG was introduced by Bales and Gohen during the 1979, refers to the validity
and reliability in investigations. Having the acronym of System of Multiple level Of
Groups represents both theory and method for defining and analyzing the interaction
among the group participants. SYMLOG method allows the manager to collect the
group member perception about the interaction in the work group organization or in
the larger organization. Structure analysis to the Andes group is defined by SYMLOG
and they presumed that most variation in-group behavior revolves around social
structure.
Bales expanded the structure and included two additional structural dimensions status
(dominance/submission) and attraction (friendly/unfriendly).
SYMLOG defines the group activities under three dimensions (Dominance versus
submissiveness), friendliness versus unfriendliness and acceptance versus non-
acceptance of authority. Group tends to be effective when all the above-mentioned
three categories are aligned. UPB defines the three categories of SYMLOG’s group
structure and this analysis provides feedback to the group members about how
effective their behaviors were shown and what are the additional could be added to
make their behaviour much more effective and the feedback provided is precise,
targeted and accurate.
This theory is a complex theory, which explains about personality and classification
of personality, theory of society and ideology.
SYMLOG analysis develops the leadership attribute amongst the individuals by
analyzing the feedback received from the groups about the intended and unintended
consequences of the behaviors of the individuals. Learn and practice how
significantly they can improve their interpersonal relationships, ability to lead the
group and how positively they can influence their group and form a cohesive group,
which leads to sustainability and this, improves the personal performance of each
member of their group or team.
Three important components of group structure is Norms, Roles and Network of
connections among the members.
SYMLOG analysis is based on the following three dimensions:
1. Dominance or Submissiveness: This dimension clarifies whether the person is
active, talkative or extravert or passive, quite, or introverted. Dominance is Up
and Submissive is referred to as Down
2. Friendliness or Unfriendliness: This second dimension refers that whether the
person is warm, open and positive or negative and irritable. Friendliness is
referred to be very positive and unfriendliness referred here to be negative.
3. Acceptance or Non-acceptance of task – oriented authority: The third
dimension refers about, if the member is analytic and task oriented, or
emotional non- traditional, and resentful.
