Fall 2019

Reviewing this summer and its highlights, the above image is certainly one to
remember! I had the good fortune to join my daughter, who works on the Norwegian
Bliss cruiseship as a musician, on a trip to Alaska! In this case, embarkation port is
Seattle WA, a lovely place with a typical Westcoast vibe, the famous Space Needle, and
Pike Place Market :
Since my last visit many years ago, another attraction has now claimed No. 1 spot: the
Dale Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum showcasing the studio glass of this renowned
Tacoma WA artist. What a treat!

My photos just do not do it justice, it is indescribable, what a genius! Right at the bottom
of the Space Needle and outside of the museum, you can wander through a garden
embellished by his stunning work! How inspiring!
Leaving Seattle and going north, the
superlatives continued in Alaska. This voyage was of course somewhat different from
the trips I do on small ships with Maple Leaf Adventures, however, one can never get
enough of the breathtaking scenery up here, the ocean, mountains and glaciers:

Glacier Bay

Mendenhall Glacier
I am particularly fond of the towns along the way and if one can look past the tourists
and the jewellery shops, they are neat places to visit and roam around in. They appeal
to my pioneer spirit!

Skagway is the gateway to the White Pass and Yukon Route which climbs from sea
level to almost 3000 ft. The train ride up to this inhospitable landscape was a great
experience. It is hard to imagine what it took to build the railway during the gold rush.
Mike Heney, railroad builder, is known to have said: “Give me enough dynamite, and
snoose, and I’ll build you a railroad to hell”!
Back down in town, I always enjoy the harbours with their colourful boats:
Meanwhile, back home we celebrated painting outdoors at the Leighton Centre. This
showcase of paintings done “en plein air” continues to September 22 and I encourage
everyone to take a drive out to the Leighton to enjoy nature and art! They are also
hosting a number of workshops catering to this concept of painting. My Watercolour
Plein Air Workshop is slated for Sunday, September 10, a great opportunity for any
traveller to get a headstart on sketching/painting outdoors! Register online!

Soon afterwards at the end of September, the Leighton Centre is hosting the Canadian
Society of Painters in Watercolour’s 94th Annual Open Water. A treat for every
watercolour painter not to be missed. Not often are we able to enjoy an exhibition that
focusses solely on this medium! The opening is September 28, 2-4pm.

One of many wonderful paintings in the show

With all that inspiration to create art, my group of France travellers is ready to leave
early October for the south of France to enjoy the scenery, quaint villages, food and
wine:

Southern France Idyll, Pastel, 12”x16”

Baked Goods, W/C, 15”x22””

Fortunately, or unfortunately, my next trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy in the spring is full!
That leaves the trip to Newfoundland in June. I may have room on this adventure so let
me know if you are interested.

Again, classes at Parkdale and Strathcona resume the week of September 16 so

register soon online or by phoning the offices.

I am not sure if you have heard of a new TV channel called “Makeful”, #555. It caters to
all things we create and one in particular caught my attention: The British Portrait and
Landscape Artist of the Year, airing on a Sunday night. Interesting to see what is being
produced and how and what the judges have to say. Check it out!
Have a wonderful autumn and happy creating!

Keep in touch!

All the best in life and in art!
