No departure may be made from the agreement without consultation with the tasking authority. Nations may propose changes at any time to the tasking authority where they will be processed in the same manner as the original agreement. 3. Ratifying nations have agreed that national orders, manuals and ins~ tructions implementing this STANAG will include a reference to the STANAG number for purposes of identification. DEFINITIONS 4, Ratification is "The declaration by which @ nation formally accepts the content of this Standardization Agreement". 5. Implementation is "The fulfilment by a nation of its obligations under this Standardization Agreement". 6. Reservation is "The stated qualification by a nation which describes that ‘part of this Standardization Agreement which it cannot implement or can implement only with limitations". RATIFICATION, IMPLEMENTATION AND RESERVATIONS 7. Page 443 gives the details of ratification and implementation of this agreement. If no details are shown it signifies that the nation has not yet notified the tasking authority of its intentions. The aim of this agreement is to establish the design criteria for a ftagmentation protective body armour to be used by the NATO Forces. AGREEMENT 2. Participating nations agree to apply the principles listed below in the design of fragmentation protective body armour for the combat soldier. 3, Ballistic Protection. The protective body armour shall: a. Provide maximum ballistic protection against fragmentation munitions. Protection against small arms fire should also be maximised provided that this does not result in degradation of fragmentation protection or in unacceptable weight for the tasks involved. b. Make provision for che addition of a flexible collar and groin armour ‘or pockets to contain plates for enhanced protection when required. c. Promote by design, styling and comfort, the acceptance and confidence of the wearer in the combat environment. d. Maximize the area of torso coverage consistent with the combat soldiers tasks, clothing, individual equipment, individual and crew served weapons. e. Overlap front and side openings when closed to provide positive protection. 4. Hunan Factors. The protective body armour shall: a, Be @ minimum weight consistent with the protection criteria of paragraph 3. b. Promote by design the distribution of the weight over the largest possible area. c. Be designed to be compatible with the helmet, shoulder fired and crew served weapons, communications equipment and load carrying equipment. e. Cause mininal interference with the performance of combat tasks. £. Be easy to put on and take off. g: Be compatible with NBC protective clothing and equipment. hh. Impart the minimum heat load upon the wearer. 5, Camouflage. Camouflage shall be in accordance with the rest of the individual protection ensemble i.e. to the requirements of STANAG 2333. 6. Reliability and Maintainability. The protective body armour shall: a. Be resistant to rot and fungus. b. Be resistant to permanent and temporary performance degradation by water. ¢. Be easily decontaminated from radioactive fallout, chemical and biological agents. This must be consistent with retaining the required level of ballistic protection. a. Be easy to maintain and repair. e. Be able to be transported, used and stored in ali climates, world-wide and retain ite ballistic protection properties. f£. Have a projected service life of at least one year of field use and a storage life of at least 10 years, if the materials known so far permit. g- Be Fire resistant and self extinguishing. h. Be resistant to POL. i, Not emit excessive noise during normal use. Afford protection from high intensity thermal radiation. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AGREEMENT 7. This STANAG is considered to be implemented when participating nations have iboved inetructione to its forces that any future fragmentation protective body armour will be designed according to the design criteria described in this STANAG. 24. ww SY29118.2
