● What is box pushing technique?

BOX PUSHING TECHNIQUE
● It is the latest method of construction of RUBs
to eliminate level crossings.
● It is developed where in R.C.C boxes in
segments are cast outside and pushed through
the heavy embankments of rail or road by
jacking.
METHODOLOGY
● Excavation
● Casting of Thrust bed
● Fabrication of Front and Rear shield
● Box casting and placing
● Pushing-Shifting-Pushing operation
Excavation
● Open excavation is carried out for construction
of thrust bed.
Thrust bed
● Thrust bed counters the reaction force from
hydraulic jack and transfer it into the soil.
● It is required to push the box into embankment.
● On completion of jacking the thrust bed is
utilised as floor bed and so left in place.
Casting of RCC box
● The Precast box is cast in convienent length.
● The section of the box is designed as per
IRS/IRC codes of practice for loading.
● Leading segment is cast overwell set and
leveled thrust bed.
● Concrete grade generally kept as M35.
Fabrication of front shield
● It is fabricated for cutting action and to provide
support to prevent caving in of soil.
Fabrication of Rear shield
● It is provided by anchoring steel plates on the
face of bottom slab of RCC box to suitably
distribute the jacking load.
Pushing operation of the box
● Under suitable speed restriction, the segments
are jacked into the embankment by means of
hydraulic jacks of suitable capacity installed.
Continued...
● To reduce the friction between the thrust bed
and box segment, two layers of polyethylene
sheet sandwiched with a coat of grease is
provided.
● The box is jacked into the embankment in a
controlled and phased manner with simultaneous
excavation of material.
● Generally the average rate of pushing of box is
1m in 24hrs to ensure safety.
Advantages
● No disruption to rail traffic.
● Bettter quality control.
● Time of completion is less.
● Economical.
Disadvantages
● Needs trained staff and skilled supervision.
● Once the lateral&vertical alignment of box disturbed
it becomes almost impossible to rectify it.
