Facilities and Equipment in Relation To Performance in Physical Education
`Introduction
One of the issues of great controversy among educators in secondary institutions today is the issue of the poor
state of equipment and facilities. A school of thought argues that the problem is that of inadequate equipment
required for teaching the students that is responsible for the quality of graduate the school produce. While
another school of thought believes that it is the manner of utilization of the available equipment and facilities
in the schools, the prime aim of this paper is to assess the adequacy and utilization of equipment and facilities
in tertiary institutions.
Facilities, supplies and equipment provision are important aspect of physical education and sports
management. Excellent programmed is the key word in physical education and sports competitions, and this
requires well equipped good play-ground for training. Standard facilities and equipment are essential
prerequisites to good and impressive performance. Lack of adequate and standard facilities and equipment
The study examined the availability and convenience of the facilities that were provided to students with the
educational needs in mainstreamed schools. It also ascertained the qualifications of teachers teaching in
mainstreamed public secondary schools its major objective was to study the availability of school facilities
and their impacts on quality of education. And, to study and determine the relationship between availability

materials available are inadequate for effective use in schools.Oranu (1990) revealed that lacks of physical
facilities are the problems of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. A Study of South Carolina Public Schools
(2001)Most principals believe that the condition and adequacy of a school facility has a significant impact on
school academic outcomes.Ahunanya and Ubabudu (2006) also reiterated the provision of adequate facilities

for effective teaching and learning to take place.Ayoo (2002) carried out a study on the effects of school
physical facilities on performance and established that availability of facilities had a direct link with the
performance of learners in examination.Kassam (1978) and Leslie (1992) reported that insufficient learning
facilities discourage learners.Adedeji (2000), also pointed out that there must be sufficient motivation in the
form of attractiveness of facilities, supplies and equipment to captivate athletes’ interest to participate in
sports or games. He further stated that the facilities and equipment in this country are simply not good enough
and are hindrance to physical education and sports development. Bucher and Krotee (2002) opined that
equipment andfacilities should always be maintained in a serviceable condition.Bandele (2003) noted that the
importance of physical facilities cannot be relegated. Facilities like modern laboratories, libraries and
classrooms are to be put in place in all our schools. Akinfolarin (2008) identified facilities as a major factor
contributing to academic performance in the schools system. These include classroom furniture, recreational
equipment among others. According to pate et al. (1997) it might be impossible to achieve satisfactory results
from students whose training facilities and equipment are inadequate or of sub-standard.
To incite the gaps of Physical activities in school, school must consider their contexts and the needs of the
students. Schools can involve students in a broad range of physical activities of at least moderate intensity.
The activities encourage participation and enjoyment, are generally not competitive and are easily achievable
for all students. Assisting students to develop a physical skill base that supports active participation in a range
of physical activities. Supporting active play and recreation during activity breaks. Providing access to
equipment and facilities (including grassed spaces) to encourage active participation. Supporting the adoption
of active travel options to and from school (e.g. walking, cycling and/or using scooters).Minimizing sitting
time and breaking up long periods of sitting in classes as often as possible. Supporting increased
understanding about the importance of students limiting their use of electronic media (e.g. television, seated

electronic games and computer use) to no more than two hours a day as lower levels are associated with

question and other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from the respondents. A numerical value
is assigned to each potential choice and a mean figure for all the responses is computed at the end of the
evaluation or survey.
The researcher will use questionnaire to gather data from the respondents in determining of facilities and
equipment in relation to performance in physical education. In gathering data the researchers will provide a
letter of approval to the school head and principals for getting permission to administer the questionnaire.
As the data gathered the result will be collected and solved appropriately for better analysis.
Statistical Analyses
The data were tallied and tabulated for analysis using the following statistical instrument appropriate for the
study. The adequacy mean, and the percentage were used to interpret the data that were obtained on the

The total number of the grade 7 students is 105 with a minimum grade of 74 and maximum of 95 and its
mean is 85.75 with a standard deviation of 5.15. The total number of the grade 8 students is 97 with a
minimum grade of 74 and maximum of 97 and its mean is 88.06 with a standard deviation of 6.14. The total
number of the grade 9 students is 118 with a minimum grade of 73 and maximum of 94 and its mean is 85.86
with a standard deviation of 6.11. The total number of the grade 10 students is 113 with a minimum grade of
75 and maximum of 96 and its mean is 88.16 with a standard deviation of 3.99
Discussion
The study shown that the physical education facilities and equipment in secondary schools were majority is
not available for teaching and learning. The findings also showed that the secondary school students
performed well in both the affective and psychomotor domain of learning. It was revealed in the study that
there is no significant relationship between school facilities and equipment in students’ performance.
Implications to Practice
To Department of Education: As the government agency that supervises the educational program. The study
may serve as a beginning of innovation and improvement in teaching and learning process particularly in
Physical Education.
For Teachers as the facilitator in teaching Physical Education the study may give different techniques,
methods, and strategies in teaching the student and to minimize the problem face by the Physical Educators.
For the future researchers in the field of education research, this study may serve as a guide for future related
researchers.
