FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

`Introduction

One of the issues of great controversy among educators in secondary institutions today is the issue of the poor

state of equipment and facilities. A school of thought argues that the problem is that of inadequate equipment

required for teaching the students that is responsible for the quality of graduate the school produce. While

another school of thought believes that it is the manner of utilization of the available equipment and facilities

in the schools, the prime aim of this paper is to assess the adequacy and utilization of equipment and facilities

in tertiary institutions.

Facilities, supplies and equipment provision are important aspect of physical education and sports

management. Excellent programmed is the key word in physical education and sports competitions, and this

requires well equipped good play-ground for training. Standard facilities and equipment are essential

prerequisites to good and impressive performance. Lack of adequate and standard facilities and equipment

hampers physical education and sports programmed in many ways.

The study examined the availability and convenience of the facilities that were provided to students with the

educational needs in mainstreamed schools. It also ascertained the qualifications of teachers teaching in

mainstreamed public secondary schools its major objective was to study the availability of school facilities

and their impacts on quality of education. And, to study and determine the relationship between availability

of facilities, equipment and academic performance of students in their educational needs.

Okoro (1998) pointed out that the facilities which include the buildings, equipment, tools and school

materials available are inadequate for effective use in schools.Oranu (1990) revealed that lacks of physical

facilities are the problems of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. A Study of South Carolina Public Schools

(2001)Most principals believe that the condition and adequacy of a school facility has a significant impact on

school academic outcomes.Ahunanya and Ubabudu (2006) also reiterated the provision of adequate facilities

for effective teaching and learning to take place.Ayoo (2002) carried out a study on the effects of school

physical facilities on performance and established that availability of facilities had a direct link with the

performance of learners in examination.Kassam (1978) and Leslie (1992) reported that insufficient learning

facilities discourage learners.Adedeji (2000), also pointed out that there must be sufficient motivation in the

form of attractiveness of facilities, supplies and equipment to captivate athletes’ interest to participate in

sports or games. He further stated that the facilities and equipment in this country are simply not good enough

and are hindrance to physical education and sports development. Bucher and Krotee (2002) opined that

equipment andfacilities should always be maintained in a serviceable condition.Bandele (2003) noted that the

importance of physical facilities cannot be relegated. Facilities like modern laboratories, libraries and

classrooms are to be put in place in all our schools. Akinfolarin (2008) identified facilities as a major factor

contributing to academic performance in the schools system. These include classroom furniture, recreational

equipment among others. According to pate et al. (1997) it might be impossible to achieve satisfactory results

from students whose training facilities and equipment are inadequate or of sub-standard.

To incite the gaps of Physical activities in school, school must consider their contexts and the needs of the

students. Schools can involve students in a broad range of physical activities of at least moderate intensity.

The activities encourage participation and enjoyment, are generally not competitive and are easily achievable

for all students. Assisting students to develop a physical skill base that supports active participation in a range

of physical activities. Supporting active play and recreation during activity breaks. Providing access to

equipment and facilities (including grassed spaces) to encourage active participation. Supporting the adoption

of active travel options to and from school (e.g. walking, cycling and/or using scooters).Minimizing sitting

time and breaking up long periods of sitting in classes as often as possible. Supporting increased

understanding about the importance of students limiting their use of electronic media (e.g. television, seated

electronic games and computer use) to no more than two hours a day as lower levels are associated with

reduced health risks.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

According to Kirui Kipng’ J.E. et al. In terms of facilities and equipment, Physical education is commonly

faced with the challenge of inadequate facilities and poor maintenance of teaching sites. Central and eastern

European countries are less endowed with facilities and equipment and there are signs of deteriorating

provision.

To illustrate the flow of the study, first is to determine the availability of the facilities and equipment in the

physical education using questionnaire. Lastly to assess the student’s performance the researchers will get

their grades in physical education.

The study aims to assess the availability of the physical Education facilities and equipment in schools of Andres

M. Luciano High School, Dolores National High School and Ayala High School in Magalang, Pampanga .To determine

the availability of facilities and equipment used in physical education subject, How the performance of the

respondents in Physical Education may be described and Is there a significant relationship between facilities and

equipment and performance in Physical Education.

Research Problems

1. To determine the availability of facilities and equipment used in physical education subject

2. , How the performance of the respondents in Physical Education may be described.

3. Is there a significant relationship between facilities and equipment and performance in Physical Education.

Method

The researchers will conduct this study at the Andres M. Luciano High School, Dolores National High School

and Ayala High School in Magalang, Pampanga.

The researchers will use the Descriptive method of research to determine the facilities and equipment in

relation to performance in physical education.

The standard ratio of the facilities and equipment given by the department of education (DepEd) is the bases

for preparing the checklist to comprehend the availability of the equipment and facilities to serve the number

of the students of school

Respondents

The respondents of the study will be the sports coordinator who is in charge in school facilities and

equipment. Random sampling is method to be used for conducting this research.

Instruments

The researchers will use questionnaire. Questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of services of

question and other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from the respondents. A numerical value

is assigned to each potential choice and a mean figure for all the responses is computed at the end of the

evaluation or survey.

The researcher will use questionnaire to gather data from the respondents in determining of facilities and

equipment in relation to performance in physical education. In gathering data the researchers will provide a

letter of approval to the school head and principals for getting permission to administer the questionnaire.

As the data gathered the result will be collected and solved appropriately for better analysis.

Statistical Analyses

The data were tallied and tabulated for analysis using the following statistical instrument appropriate for the

study. The adequacy mean, and the percentage were used to interpret the data that were obtained on the

responses of the respondent

Results

This chapter presents the data gathered through the questionnaires. The data are described and analyzed

according to the sequence of the research.

As you seen in this table in statement number 1 all of the three respondents answered YES with the

percentage of 100 %. In statement number 2,3,5,6,7,8,13 all of the respondents answered NO with the

percentage of 100%, statement number 4,9,10, one out of three respondents answered YES with the

percentage of 33.33 % and two out of three respondents answered NO with the percentage of 66.67 %. In the

statement number 11and 12 two out of three respondents answered YES with the percentage of 66.67% and

In the statement number 1,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,19&25 all of the respondents answered no with a

percentage of or percent. Statement number 2 and 24, all the respondents answered yes with a percentage of

100 percent. Statement 6,17,18,21,22,and 23, 2 out of 3 respondents answered yes with a percentage og 66.67

This table show that 34 out of 104 students got the highest percentage which is 32.69% and their grades are

around 80 to 84, and 1 out of 104 students got the lowest percentage which is 0.96% and its grade is below 75

around 90-100, and 6 out of 118 students got the lowest percentage which is 5.08% and their grade is below

The total number of the grade 7 students is 105 with a minimum grade of 74 and maximum of 95 and its

mean is 85.75 with a standard deviation of 5.15. The total number of the grade 8 students is 97 with a

minimum grade of 74 and maximum of 97 and its mean is 88.06 with a standard deviation of 6.14. The total

number of the grade 9 students is 118 with a minimum grade of 73 and maximum of 94 and its mean is 85.86

with a standard deviation of 6.11. The total number of the grade 10 students is 113 with a minimum grade of

75 and maximum of 96 and its mean is 88.16 with a standard deviation of 3.99

Discussion

The study shown that the physical education facilities and equipment in secondary schools were majority is

not available for teaching and learning. The findings also showed that the secondary school students

performed well in both the affective and psychomotor domain of learning. It was revealed in the study that

there is no significant relationship between school facilities and equipment in students’ performance.

Implications to Practice

To Department of Education: As the government agency that supervises the educational program. The study

may serve as a beginning of innovation and improvement in teaching and learning process particularly in

Physical Education.

For Teachers as the facilitator in teaching Physical Education the study may give different techniques,

methods, and strategies in teaching the student and to minimize the problem face by the Physical Educators.

For the future researchers in the field of education research, this study may serve as a guide for future related

researchers.

Under the facilities and equipment of the grade 7,8,9,and 10 most of the sports director answers NO in the

following statement that were given to them that means their facilities and equipment didn’t meet the

standard number of the facilities and equipment of the Department of Education(DepEd)

For the grade of the students in the performance in physical education most of them got the grade around 90-

100 which we conclude base on the result of our study, that facilities and equipment had no effect on the

performance of the students in the subject physical education.

Recommendation

Based on the conclusion this paper recommends:

1. Adequate and standard facilities, equipment and supplies should be provided for all public schools

(secondary schools) in each of the states.

2. Trained physical education teacher and sports coaches should be employed to all the secondary

school in Magalang Pampanga.

3. Physical education programmed should be made compulsory in all secondary school.
4. All heads of school should held responsible for lock of maintenance of physical education/sports

facilities, equipment and supplies were necessary
