Amid the dense and colorful fabric of Delhi, lies a small town

of Jaunapur. With a patch of land spread across 2.62 acres, was

where Art House was supposed to be built. The site with trees

on the periphery shields the house from the surroundings. The

presence of trees on the site led to the massing and orientation

of the house plan.

The genesis of the design was to build the house with the trees, not just around it.
When viewed the house looks like a collection of boxes arranged across the site.

The way the natural light is brought inside the house is done by understanding the
relation between the tree, the canopies they form and the sun path. The house is
opened at multiple levels to let the dappled light get inside the house. The house
is opened in multiple levels which allow for the dappled light to enter through at
different times of the day while ensuring that all one looks onto is greenery. These
canopies are also used as a natural light filter which help in creating the right
ambient daylight conditions and pleasant environment in the interiors, even in
peak summer.

The focused approach towards orientation and shading elements resulted in

controlling the heat gain and ensure ambient day lighting. The existing trees
were an asset to the site as they were utilized as natural shading devices which
helped orient the gazing based on the sun path. In other areas, timber shading
devices were developed as architectural features which also animate the façade
bit by their varying form and mass but also by the sciography cast on the ‎stark
white walls behind.

From the moment one steps in the foyer, a sense of art prevails. An art piece
positioned at the foyer strikes a strong contrast in the backdrop the calmness
of green landscaped garden. Entering in the living space, introduces a luxuriant,
light and space.

There was a constant effort to ensure that the space and the materials used
enhance the collection rather than fight with it/overpower it - The sense of a home
housing a collection of art. Not to make an overt statement with the architecture,
but to make it come alive thru multiple visual experiences as one goes around.
In a sense, harking back to mid-60s modernism when most of south Delhi was
built. A simple clean play of mass and void, foliage and rigid form, solid surfaces
and glazed punctures.

The client’s intention of having a spatial connectivity to the functional spaces from
the double height central court and ability to connect with the greens from every
point of the house, was hence achieved. The user doesn’t experience a break in the
connection with greenery. Thus, the house is ‘cuboids’ of interlinked green spaces at
two levels with the functional spaces tucked into it. KMS Residence is a contemporary
box structure that was an extreme piece of art which emerged beyond the clients
expression transforming it into an introverted sustainable living environment.

In entirety the house weaves together the client’s love for art and at the same time
it results in nestles quietly amid the busy city streets.
