Packet 3: Systems of Equations

Chapter 3 focuses on systems of equations in both two and three variables. Students
should enter Honors Algebra II have a strong command of how to solve two-variable
systems using substitution, elimination, and graphing.

Quick Systems of Equations Vocab:

 Consistent systems of equations have one or more solutions.
 Inconsistent systems of equations have no solutions.
 Dependent systems of equations have infinitely many solutions.
 Independent systems of equations have only one solution.

Part I: Solving Systems (Try Without a Calculator)

1. Graph each system of equations on graph paper and determine its solution. Also
state whether the system is consistent, inconsistent, dependent, or independent.
a. 3x  y  8, x  y  8
b. 2x  4y  8, x  2y  4
2 1
c. x  y  3, y  x  6
3 3
d. 1.2x  2.5y  4, .8x  1.5y  10
i. Estimated solution is ok, here

2. Solve each system of equations by substitution.

4x  3y  18
a.
3x  y  7
3r  9s  36
b.
r  8s  10
4x  6y  9
c.
2x  10y  11
3. Solve each system of equations by elimination.
3x  7y  5
a.
x  3y  1
2a  b  8
b.
6a  3b  9
y  5x  37
c.
2x  3y  20

4. Solve each system of equations with the method of your choice.

3x  7y  5
a.
x  3y  1 Graphing says, “Please choose
me at least once. Please!
2a  b  8 <sniffle> No one ever chooses
b. me,” and puts his head down,
6a  3b  9 despondent.

y  5x  37
c.
2x  3y  20
y  3x  27
d. 1
y  x 7
2
1 3
x  y  3
e. 4 5
3 2
x  y  13
4 5

5. Solve the system of inequalities using graphing. Name three points that are
solutions and one point that is not. Remember, the solution set is the area of the
graph that is shaded by all inequalities.
x 2
a.
y 1
y x 3
b.
y  x  1
x  3y  2
c. 2x  y  4
3x  4y  0
