As opening day nears,
staff at the new Abrazo
Mesa Hospital are final-
izing their training in an-
ticipation of caring for pa-
tients in the near future.
It’s also a preview of what
the West Valley can expect
when Abrazo Surprise
Hospital opens next year.
Like the future Abrazo
Surprise Hospital, the new
Abrazo Mesa Hospital will
be able to admit patients
with many different diag-
noses and offer around-
the-clock general surgery,
hospitalist and emergency
physician coverage.
Abrazo Surprise Hospi-
tal is currently under con-
struction at 16815 W. Bell
Road. The Mesa hospital
will open soon following
completion of required li-
censure, according to hos-
pital officials.
“We have been working
hard to create a culture
of a patient-friendly, effi-
cient environment with a
consumer-focused orienta-
tion,” said Christy Matlock,
RN, administrative direc-
tor for the Mesa hospital.
The 32,500 square foot
building is smaller than a
typical general hospital,
and designed as a neigh-
borhood hospital focused
on convenience and effi-
ciency. Like bigger facili-
ties, it will include a sur-
gical suite, x-ray and CT
imaging, laboratory and
other services. The hos-
pital will be staffed by
board-certified or eligi-
ble emergency physicians,
general surgeons and hos-
pitalists.
Patients with abdominal
pain, sprains and broken
bones, cardiac arrhyth-
mias, seizures, minor trau-
ma, lacerations, bladder
infections, dehydration,
pneumonia and flu are typ-
ical of illnesses and inju-
ries expected to be treated
in the hospital’s emergency
department.
“As the Valley contin-
ues to grow, we under-
stand that consumers pre-
fer to receive care closer to

home,” said Jeff Patterson,
CEO of Abrazo Arrowhead
Campus. “Community res-
idents will be able to re-
ceive 24/7 emergency care,
undergo minor surgical
procedures and have other
services performed at the
Surprise hospital. Our goal
is to provide multiple ac-
cess points for care.”
All staff of the Mesa hos-
pital participated in train-
ing for its upcoming open-
ing. Admitting, nurses,
radiology, transporters,
food service, housekeep-
ing and security all tested
processes and procedures.
Many staff played mock
patients, and patient simu-
lators included life-size fig-
ures.
“We’re anxious to be-
gin providing care for our
neighbors and friends,”
said Ms. Matlock, a Gilbert
resident. “Excellent care
and patient satisfaction are
among our top priorities,
and we want our ER wait-
ing times to be among the
shortest they can possi-
bly be.”
The Abrazo Surprise
and Abrazo Mesa hospitals
will each create about 50
full-time equivalent clinical
and support staff jobs.

hospitals, primary care
and specialty physician
practices and other ser-
vices throughout the great-
er Phoenix area. The new
hospitals are designed to
provide close integration
with sister Abrazo hospi-
tals.

Battalion will be recognized
at a send-off ceremony on
at 2 p.m. today at the Army
Aviation Support Facility
on the Papago Park Military
Reservation, 5636 E. Mc-
Dowell Road in Phoenix.
Gov. Doug Ducey will be
the keynote speaker and Air
Force Maj. Gen. Michael T.
McGuire, the adjutant gen-
eral of the Arizona Nation-
al Guard, will be the presid-
ing officer for this ceremony,
which will include family
members, friends and com-
munity supporters.
This is the company’s
third deployment in the last
eight years in support of
overseas contingency opera-
tions. These Arizona Nation-
al Guard citizen-soldiers will
be providing a medical evac-
uation support mission.
According to a release, the
2-149th GSAB was estab-
lished in September 2007
and has a proud tradition
of making up several of the
more than 12,000 individual
deployments abroad to over-
seas contingency operations
since Sept. 11, 2001.

WEST PHOENIX I-17 delays
I-10 closures this coming up for
weekend paving
Westbound Interstate
10 will close west of down-
town Phoenix this week-
end for work on the Loop
202 South Mountain Free-
way interchange, but re-
strictions will be lifted long
before Arizona Cardinals
fans begin driving to State
Farm Stadium for the
team’s 2019 opening game.
Westbound I-10 will be
closed between 35th and
67th avenues from 10 p.m.
tonight to 7 a.m. Sunday.
In addition, ramps from In-
terstate 17 to westbound
I-10, as well as the 27th Av-
enue westbound on-ramp,
will be closed during the
work.
Construction crews are
continuing work on the in-
terchange connecting I-10
with the South Mountain
Freeway.
Drivers should expect
long delays at 35th Avenue,
the first westbound exit
west of I-17. As an alter-
nate, drivers should con-
sider exiting I-10 no lat-
er than I-17, then driving
north to McDowell Road
or south to Van Buren
Street and traveling west
to re-enter I-10 west of the
closure.
Westbound I-10 driv-
ers traveling beyond the
Phoenix area should con-
sider taking Interstate
8 west at Casa Grande
and State Route 85 north
from Gila Bend to re-en-
ter I-10 in Buckeye. Drivers
on southbound I-17 plan-
ning to drive west of Phoe-
nix should con-sider Loop
101 or Loop 303 to connect
with I-10.
Additional work along
I-10 west of downtown
Phoenix is expected to re-
quire closures and lane re-
strictions on weekends
throughout September and
October.
ANTHEM
Southbound Interstate
17 will be narrowed to one
lane between Daisy Moun-
tain Drive and Pioneer
Road in the Anthem area
today and tomorrow for
resurfacing work, accord-
ing to the Arizona Depart-
ment of Transportation.
Southbound I-17 drivers
should allow extra trav-
el time and be prepared to
slow down and merge safe-
ly when approaching and
the traveling through the
work zone while the fol-
lowing restrictions are in
place:
Southbound I-17 nar-
rowed to one lane between
Daisy Mountain Drive and
Pioneer Road in north
Phoenix from 5 a.m. to 10
p.m. today and Saturday
for pavement improve-
ments. The southbound
I-17 on-ramp at Daisy
Mountain Drive and south-
bound off-ramp at Pioneer
Road will also be closed.
Drivers who normal-
ly would use the south-
bound I-17 on-ramp at Dai-
sy Mountain Drive can
detour south on Gavilan
Peak Parkway east of I-17
and use Pioneer Road to
enter I-17. While the south-
bound I-17 off-ramp at Pi-
oneer Road is closed, driv-

ers can exit to eastbound
Daisy Mountain Drive and
use southbound Gavilan
Peak Parkway to reach Pi-
oneer Road.

of Emergency Manage-
ment conducts a Commu-
nity Preparedness Survey
to gauge the preparedness
of our residents and to de-
termine the effectiveness of
our messaging to the pub-
lic.
There are 10 questions
in this survey, and it should
take no longer than 5 min-
utes to complete.
The agency will use the
results to determine how
the County and its partners
can increase our residents’
emergency preparedness
measures, increase res-
idents’ knowledge of lo-
cal hazards, and improve
emergency messaging.
The survey is available in
English and Spanish now
through Sept. 30. Share the
survey to help the agen-
cy reach more Maricopa
County residents. They will
be posting a news item on
their website and posting
on their social media pages
