be with their partners. But on the other side romantic relationship helps to inspire

the students to study more and finish their picked course. At the end of the day

romantic relationship is still a big factor on studying and to student’s life.

5

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

this research what is more important, having an Romantic Relationship on their

studies.

The topic they have choose is Romantic Relationship among students of

Rizal College of Taal and its effect on their studies, this topic is all about students

and the role of relationship in Rizal College of Taal. It is important because it can

give ideas, and to know the responsibilities of having intimate relationship while

Scope, Limitations and Delimitations

This study used 50 students from Rizal College of Taal to gather specific

data for them to know what the effect of relationship on their studies is. The

researcher used interview to gather data that are needed in the study.

The data gathered by the researchers are limited because not everyone

has an enough experience on relationship. And also the respondents had a hard

time to answer the following question because of its language.

Review of Related Literature

Romantic Relationship

Sternberg’s model of love is a useful way of organizing one’s thinking, but

may fall short of capturing the subtleties of romantic love. Think, for example, of

the feeling of being in love the sense of excitement, magic, bewilderment, the

ups and downs, the pre-occupation with the object of affection. When one is in

love life transcends the routine and acquires a specialness. It is difficult to do

justice to these feelings in an abstract psychological model. The language of

poets with its metaphor and similes has advantages in communicating the range

of feelings and experiences involved.

According to (Sullivan’s) definition of romantic interaction introduced the

concept of responsiveness of one partner to the other. He suggested that

7

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

relational closeness is regulated by clearly formulated adjustments of one’s

behavior to the expressed needs of the other person (p.246).

According to (Howe and Strauss) the analysis explores the intersection of

class, gender and racial and ethnic heritage in constituting their relationships.

Relevant literature is used to elaborate and frame the patterns found in the

accounts given by the students and its contextualized within broader cultural

economic structural change.

Effects of Romantic Relationship on Studying

Campbell & Oliver explained that some cost which are found in a romantic

relationship namely: stress and worry about the relationship, social and non-

social sacrifices, increased dependence on the partner, fights, time, effort

investment and feeling worse about the self which were said to be the cause of

anxiety of the students.

Based some students on University of the Philippines Cebu College

have also involved themselves in a romantic relationship. Having been an

institution which promoter honor and excellence among its students gave them

great challenge to maintain a good academic performance. Considering that

each professor has higher expectations of the students, an increase of workloads

which includes projects, school papers, reports and challenging exam were

given. Therefore, being college students of UP Cebu College gives them more

responsibility and it requires a great amount of time and attention.

8

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

Crissey, 2006 explained that having a relationship affair especially when

you are just a student would not just give a source of stress but also a

disturbance. Having a romantic relationship is really disturbing because a student

will deal on managing time between the school and in romantic side that

somehow leads to give academic works a lesser priority. Stress is a continuous

feeling of worry about work or personal life that prevents someone from relaxing.

Base on debate.org, 2015 that entering a relationship while studying

shouldn’t be much of an issue. Although studying can take more time than full

time job, it shouldn’t prove to be a bigger problem that working full time. Studying

is something that a couple can do together, and as long as one person isn’t too

caught up in what they’re studying, being in a relationship is perfectly acceptable.

Yee, Amy 2014 explained that there were many factors taken into

consideration by the researcher when conducting this study; age, gender. Many

articles helped to determine a hypothesis to conduct the study. The researcher

believed that this was a subject that needed to be tested because of how

common it is to see and hear about young students involved in romantic

relationships and the impact it can have on academic performance. Relationships

are highly common within young students and should be tested in order to obtain

a conclusion regarding the affects they can come with.

9

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

Manning concludes that romantic relationship gives more negative effects

in the academic performance of adolescents. Teen nowadays consider

relationship as the number one source of stress. It results from the break ups or

conflicts with partner. Even those who give more importance on academics,

spending time with one’s partner may also serve as a distraction.

Based on blogspot.com the relationship assumed between grade point

average and dating status was not supported by the data. However, students

involved in a relationship experienced more stress when facing deadlines for

school. The data has not revealed any clear correlation in the study between

dating status and academic performance, though hopefully further research in

this idea will prove beneficial.

Factors that affect their Studies while in a relationship

Huggins, Gabriella 2015 explained that there were many factors taken

into consideration by the researcher when conducting this study; age, gender.

The researcher believed that this was a subject that needed to be tested

because of how common it is to see and hear about young students involved in

romantic relationships and the impact it can have on academic performance.

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

Reasons why students get into a relationship

Based on Cattembam’s Blog, 2013 most relationships based on this reason

are often found in schools. Also, this kind of reason regularly moves from surface

academic relationship to a fully-fledged relationship.

It can also take the form in which both of the partners involved benefit but usually

only one partner benefits because in this case, the other partner selects his/her

partner based primarily on the other’s academic potentials so as to cover for

his/her own academic defects.

Difference of studying while in a relationship and without relationship

The student who has a relationship has a limited time to study since

she/he must divide the time for both studying and dating. It becomes more

difficult when there is a dispute between the couple because it takes more time to

solve a dispute. Compare to a student who is single, he/she has full time. He/she

does not have to worry about lack time for the reason that he/she could spend

more time to study and do other activities. That is why the time management for

those who have a relationship is not as well as the single students’ time

management.
11

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

Synthesis

The above literatures show other meanings about romantic relationship

among students and effects on their studies. The concepts may help researchers

to know another idea, advantages and disadvantages of having romantic

relationship. Campbell and Oliver say that some cost which are found in a

romantic relationship namely; stress and worry about the relationship that cause

anxiety of the students. Some students from UPCC give them more responsibility

and it requires a great amount of time and attention. Yee Amy think that a healthy

relationship with open communication and mutual understanding has the

potential to work, but it is unhealthy ones that will make student life really difficult

and strenuous.

The different ideas make help the research more interesting and know

more about the romantic relationship and its effect on the studies of a student.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Based on the data gathered by the researchers the following finding are revealed

1. Reasons why students get into relationship.

The respondents said that the reason why the students get into a

relationship is because of inspiration their partners help them to be motivated on

studying. But one of the respondents said that the reason why students get into a

relationship is because of exposure in social media. Like nowadays there are so

many things posted on the social media; the so called “relationship goals” that

many students want. Those posts gave them idea that being on a relationship is

happier than being single. Also, some of the students wanted to experience

those things because of curiosity. And some them said that they lack of attention

from their family or surroundings that is why they seek for someone who can give

the attention they wanted.

2. Management of time by having a responsibility in school and in their

partner.

The respondents that are in a relationship were able to manage their time

on both relationship and studying. But most of the respondents are more focused

on studying. Their priority is their studies. Also, someone shared her experience

she is doing when managing her time for both. According to her when she

divided her time for her studies and boyfriend; on daytime she focuses on the
16

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

studies in school works and when the night time comes that is the time that she

is going to text or call her boyfriend. And someone said that it is not an issue if

you were in a relationship or not when studying because it depends on the

person who handles it.

3. The help of relationships on their studies

The respondents said that having a relationship while studying is a big help

because aside from having an inspiration you have also a companion. Their

partners help them to finish their school works or projects when they needed it. It

is also a big advantage because there is someone who will be there when they

are stress on their studies. Their partners gave them also moral support that

helps them to study well and hard. Also there is someone who will support them

to pursue their dreams

4. Ways they do to solve the problems on both relationship and studies.

The respondents said that when they experience problems on both

relationship and studies they still prioritize to solve the problem on studies

because for them it is more important than relationship. Studying can give them a

better future than prioritizing the problem on relationship. They are not that

affected on the problem that their partner may cause because studying is their

priority. But on the other side they are respondents that still able to prioritize their

relationship than their relationship because for them that is a big factor when you

have a problem with your problem because they become distracted and can’t

focus on their studies.

17

RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL

5. Studying while on a relationship or without it.

Most of the respondents said that it is way better to study while in a

relationship because they have inspiration to and motivation to study harder and

well. They are able to relieve their stress through texting or calling their partner.

And they have someone who support and help them to do some school works.

But on the other side there are still students who answered that it is better to

study without it because they can focus on their studies. All their time and effort

will be given on their studies and they will not be distracted on studying because

if there is a problem it is just all about the studies.
