WET SCRUBBER

In today life the air pollution causes physical ill effects to the human beings

and also the environment. The main contribution of the air pollution is the toxics

from automobile exhaust gas like carbon dioxide and unburnt Hydrocarbon. In

order to reduce these emission rate, the techniques has been implemented such as

catalytic converter, modification in intake manifold, alternate fuel methods, etc.

In this research work, the alternate emission control techniques has been

proposed i.e., wet scrubber. Wet scrubber is a pollution control techniques which is

applicable for IC engine. The smoke test is carried out after implemented with IC

engine. Evaluate the results of before and after condition of wet scrubber.

Work plan –
 Identification of problem

 Conceptual study

 Solution of problem

 Planning & Designing

 Material selection

 Fabrication process

 Implementation & Evaluation

 Conclusion of research
Brief Methodology:

The exhaust gas cleaning system is known as another name: A Scrubber. It

is used to treat the exhaust gas with substances of lime water (Ca (OH)2) so as to

remove most of the toxics from the exhaust and reduce PM (Particulate Matter) to

some extent. After scrubbing, the cleaned exhaust is emitted into the atmosphere.

All scrubber technologies create a waste stream containing the substance used for

the cleaning process plus the toxics and PM removed from the exhaust gas of the

engines.

Wet scrubbers use a liquid to remove pollutants from an exhaust stream. In

gaseous emission control applications, wet scrubbers remove pollutants by

absorption. For this reason, wet scrubbers used for gaseous pollutant control often

are referred to as absorbers. Absorption is very effective when controlling pollutant

gases present in appreciable concentration, but also is feasible for gases at dilute

concentrations when the gas is highly soluble in the absorbent.

Chemical Reactions:
Ca(OH)2 + SO2 → CaSO3 + H2O

Neutralizes Acid present in water

2HCl + Ca(OH)2 → CaCl2 + 2H2

H2SO4 + Ca(OH)2 → CaSO4 + 2H2O

Precipitates bicarbonates as Calcium Carbonate

CO2 + Ca(OH)2 → CaCO3 + 2H2O

Precipitates bicarbonates as Calcium Carbonate

Ca(HCO3)2 + 2Ca(OH)2 → 2CaCO3 + 2H2O

Converts bicarbonate ions (Like NaHCO3, KHCO3) into Carbonate

NaHCO3 + Ca(OH)2 → CaCO3 + H2O + Na2CO3
