Determination of Field Density by Sand Replacement Method

OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:

(a) DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY OF SAND:
Container Dimensions: Diameter = 4”= 10.16 cm, Height = 4.5” = 11.43 cm

Volume of the calibrating container , V (cm3) 926.66

Weight of Apparatus, W1 (gm.) 1519
Weight of Apparatus + Sand, W2 (gm.) 2866
Weight of Sand, W (gm.) 1347
Bulk Density of Sand, Ybs = W/V (gm./cc) 1.45

(b) DETERMINATION OF WEIGHT OF SAND IN THE CONE:

Weight of Apparatus + Sand before pouring, W3 (gm.) 6142
Weight of Apparatus + Sand after pouring, W4 (gm.) 5666
Weight of Sand in the Cone, Ws = W3-W4 (gm.) 476
Moisture Content Determination
Weight of Empty Container W3 (gm.) 14.31
Weight of Wet Soil + Container W4 (gm.) 40.90
Weight of Dry Soil + Container W5 (gm.) 38.66
Weight of Dry Soil Ws (gm.) 24.36
Weight of Water Ww (gm.) 2.24
Moisture Content W (%) 5.79

(c) DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY / IN-SITU DENSITY OF THE SOIL:

Weight of Material from the hole + Container W5 (gm.) 1353
Weight of Empty Container W6 (gm.) 301
Weight of Material form the hole, Wm= W5-W6 (gm.) 1052
Weight of Apparatus + Sand before pouring, W7 (gm.) 6143
Weight of Apparatus + Sand after pouring, W8 (gm.) 4778
Weight of Sand in hole, Whole= W7-W8-Ws (gm.) 889
Volume of Sand in hole, Vs= Whole/Ybs (cm3) 613.11
Bulk / In-situ Density, Yb= Wm / Vs (gm./cc) 1.72
In Situ Density Yd= Yb/ 1+w 1.82

RESULTS:
The in-situ density of the soil by sand replacement method comes out to be 1.82 gm. /cc.

Determination of Field Density by Sand Replacement Method

COMMENTS:
Determination of field density of cohesion less and gravelly soil is not possible by core cutter method,
because it is not possible to obtain a core sample. In such situation, the sand replacement method is
employed to determine the unit weight. In sand replacement method, a small cylindrical pit is excavated
and the weight of the soil excavated from the pit is measured. Sand whose density is known is filled into
the pit. By measuring the weight of sand required to fill the pit and knowing its density the volume of pit
is calculated. Knowing the weight of soil excavated from the pit and the volume of pit, the density of soil
is calculated. Sand replacement method may be adopted for both fine grained and granular soil samples.
