Hello seamen,
I want to know the factors that are responsible for increase in temperature of exhaust of main engine unit.
How to rectify the same.

Charge air temperature too high, boost pressure low (Turbo failure)
The vast variety of potential reasons shows the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY of keeping a regular engine log,
knowing the optimum readings for various ship and engine conditions and immediately investigating
departures from these optima and rectifying them. Sadly this ability is only gained through experience
and, dare I say it not relying solely on a computer printout but making regular engine room rounds and
relying on all 5 senses - something which seems to be sadly lacking in these days of "But the computer
says..."!!

Blocked Turbocharger intakes. Bad fuel caused Vanadium to build up on the grids on one ship I sailed on.
Good tip - 99% (ok thats a guess but it is based on experience) of all known diesel problems are fuel
related.
As for
Cookie exhaust
and Data temp -
Use Consent rising quick - fuel valvesx (ok ok plus all the other things mentioned - bet its fuel
related though ,) over a period - passing exhaust valve.

After a day or two of 6-on/6-off checking/cleaning turbochargers, off Dakar, the conclusion was 'bad fuel'.
There was nothing obvious wrong with either the turbos or the fuel valves and the problem went away,
eventually. (Must have burnt itself out).

Last time it was an issue for me was on an OPV that had one main engine (Ruston) with high exhaust
temps reading... I changed the pyrometer probe.... That fixed it... always check instrumentation.
One of those Derek - and another reason that doesn't depend on any of the gas laws!!

Duncan I thought it was because of the combined gas laws ( Boyle and Charles )
I have to confess I don't know of any other reason . Derek
