ASSIGNMENT – 1

1. Draw the block diagram of basic electrical drive system. Explain each component.

2. (a) Write the advantages of an electrical drive system.

(b) Explain the four quadrant operation of a motor drive in general.

3. Explain the operation of closed loop speed control scheme with inner current control loop.

4. (a) Describe braking methods employed for D.C. motors.

(b) A 220 V, 200A, 800 rpm dc separately excited motor has an armature resistance
of 0.05Ω. The motor armature is fed from a variable voltage source with an internal
resistance of 0.03 Ω. Calculate internal voltage of the variable voltage source when the motor
is operating in regenerative braking at 80% of the rated motor torque and 600rpm.

5. Explain the operation of a separately excited dc motor supplied from 1-Φ fully controlled
rectifier. Assume Continuous conduction.

6. Explain the operation of a separately excited dc motor supplied from 3- Φ fully controlled
rectifier with necessary diagrams. Assume Continuous conduction.
